Salt for the Week

Last week we reflected on

persistence in prayer, examining

what our prayer tells us about our

hearts and our values. This week

the perspective on prayer is a bit

different: how we pray? The Pharisee and

the tax collector both went to the temple-

but their prayers, though presumably

sincere, told very different stories. The tax

collector could hardly get inside, he was so

ashamed of his sinfulness. He wouldn’t even

look up! He only prayed for mercy. The

Pharisee prayed a prayer of gratitude—

grateful that he wasn’t like other people.

The former went to the temple

acknowledging how small he was, and the

latter told God how great he was.

When we pray, what’s our posture? Do we

come, honest and aware of our

shortcomings, asking for mercy? Or do we

come to let God know that we’re pretty

good? The former prays to God. The latter

consoles him/herself.

Paul reminds us that daily our lives are

“poured out like a libation”… We pray that

we have the faith and the humility to

compete well, run the race, and keep the

faith.

Prayers for good weather

and safety during the

harvest…

Read the BULLETIN!

The week of November 3-9 is National Vocation Awareness Week! Pray for

vocations from the Emmaus Pastorate.

Ever Wonder Why .... ? (Part II)

Why is it... that when a woman is happy about her

pregnancy, it's a "baby"? She is asked questions

like, "when is your baby due?" When she goes to

an abortion clinic, she is often told that "it" (the

growing child) is only a blob of tissue or a product

of conception?

Why is it... so many people are uninformed about

abortion and it receives so little coverage in the

media, despite the fact that it is the number one

cause of death in the US every year.

Why is it... that you can kill an unborn baby

anytime you want to, for any reason under the

sun, but if you destroy a turtle egg on a Florida

beach, you go to jail?

Why is it… " if abortion is supposed to be

available to give a woman a "choice," that illegal

coercion is the number one cause of abortion in

America today? Also, the number one cause of

death among pregnant women is murder.

Why is it. .. that many do not see the handwriting

on the wall. .. that abortion is a catalyst to

infanticide, euthanasia, assisted suicide, human

cloning, etc., only to name a few contemporary

assaults on the sanctity of human life?

Why is it... that the major Fortune 500 companies

will proudly support Planned Parenthood, the

largest provider of abortion, but pro-life

companies are scared to death to openly support

the unborn, for fear of retribution in the

marketplace?

Why is it... that in every election cycle, God-

fearing citizens cast their vote for politicians

who support abortion when we know that the

greatest gift God gives us is life and the greatest

attack on life is abortion?

The Last Baptismal Class for the Emmaus Pastorate for 2019 will be held on Wednesday, November 20, in the St. Mark Conference Room at 6:30 p.m. Parents, if you are expecting a child, please plan to attend this class.

NOVEMBER IS FAST APPROACHING and

in this special time of year we remember in

prayer all of our deceased friends and

relatives. Have you filled out and returned

one of the gold sheets yet? The names you

list will be remembered at each and every

Mass we celebrate

during this great

month. In the

Book of

Maccabees we

read,”.. for if he was not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought.“ (Macc 12: 44-45) Let’s join

together, in faith in the resurrection,

praying for and with our deceased friends.

(Additional sheets available in the rear of

all churches.)

Our Sympathy and Prayers to~ Darlene Dittmer and Lisa and Kevin Ihde

on the death of Darlene’s daughter-in-law and Lisa’s sister-in-law, Lylini Dittmer, who passed away October 18 in Elkader. Tom and Sue Heims on the death of Tom’s

father, Delbert Heims, who passed away on October 16 in Manchester.

The Emmaus Pastorate RCIA program will discuss the Communion of Saints at the November 7 session. We Catholics say that we believe in that reality every time we recite the Creed, but

do we know what it means? If you’d like to learn more about the Communion of Saints, please join us at the St. Mary Church apartment in Strawberry Point at 7:00 p.m. on November 7. You’ll be glad you came!

For Parents and Children

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families Parents—Use this opportunity to

engage your children with the Mass

and deepen their appreciation for

the richness of their faith life.

This week we continue our focus on

prayer. It is human nature to compare ourselves

to others. It is easier to focus on the ways in

which we are “better” than others than to attend

to our own failings. In fixating on the faults of

others, the Pharisee blinds himself to his own sins

and they become obstacles to his relationship

with God. The tax collector, in contrast,

confesses his sins and begs the mercy of God. He

approaches God with fear and trembling, fully

aware of his own failures and God will exalt him in

return.

Discussion Questions

1. This week’s Gospel reading will teach us more

about prayer. Ask your children to pay

attention to the words and actions of the

Pharisee and tax collector.

2. Have your children explain the difference

between the Pharisee and the tax collector.

Discuss why Jesus preferred the prayer of the

tax collector when the Pharisee was indeed

trying to be good and follow the rules.

Did You Know... there are a total

of 190,292 Catholics in the

Archdiocese of Dubuque which is

18.9% of the total population?

Lunch Is on Us! Seventy lunches were delivered to 24 hard-working farm families (with a few more in the coming weeks) last Friday (October 18) thanks to ten wonderful drivers. Donations covered the cost of this project and we learned that you can write on a banana with an ink pen! If you have ideas for other projects, please share them with the Stewardship Committee: Diane Meyer, Judy Wulfekuhle, Joyce Anderson, Cheryl Stone, Ann Venteicher, Karon DeMar, James Lueken, and Jane Christiansen.

Wasn’t “Name Tag Sunday” Fun? Thanks for participating by checking in with your Parish Life team leaders and wearing your name tag. Every member of the parish is part of one of our 12 teams. Father John’s homily last Sunday talked about how we support each other on our journey as disciples of Jesus. The relationships we build through our Parish Life teams are one way that we experience that support. Visitors to our celebrations of Mass often comment on how vibrant St. Mark is. This is one piece in that puzzle.

St. Joseph Parish will once again host the Thanksgiving Dinner, on Thursday, November 28, at 12:00 noon—We invite you to join us as we give thanks for God’s many blessings and for this opportunity to share this warm meal in Christian fellowship on this special day. Stay tuned! More information on this year’s meal will be included in next week’s bulletin.

Communion In Your Home—If you or someone you know is not able to attend Mass at church and would like Holy Communion brought to them, please call the parish office, 563-245-2548, and arrangements will be made for you.

Thank You to everyone for the prayers, cards, phone calls, and visits while I am recuperating from both of my hip surgeries. I want to give a special thanks to the Mary and Martha Ministry of St. Joseph for the wonderful meals that we received. Virgie Downey

The New Parish Center is coming along great! How is your pledge doing?

St. Patrick Will Kick Off the use of its new parish center by offering Go Deep 2. The small

group faith sharing program will be held on November 3, 10, 17 and December 1 at 4:30 p.m. The program will give you some great insight into your Catholic faith and how you can grow in it. Check the BULLETIN!

Adult Faith Sharing—Here’s a great way to get out of cooking! St. Mark Parish is offering adult faith sharing sessions the weeks of November 4, 11, and 18, and December 2. Sessions will be held Thursday morning from 8:30-9:30 in the Parish Center. Delicious coffee cake will be served. On Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:00 we’ll meet at Café Rose. You can enjoy some of Rosie’s famous meat loaf and enjoy a low key gathering to talk about our faith. Step out of the boat!

Just a Reminder—There are Prayer Intention candles available to pray for special intentions (offering of $5 per week). Stop by the office and ask a staff member to light one for you.
