HighlightsR E L A X in the heart of Aix-en-Provence, a treasure trove of art and architecture, famous for its outdoor markets.

V I S I T a working ranch in the Camargue, France’s “cowboy country,” where we watch ranchers at work and experience a traditional gypsy feast.

V E N T U R E into the picturesque hill towns of the Luberon to taste prize-winning vintages at a local vineyard.

Ochre-tinted villages perched atop red-rock mountains. Warm Mediterranean air scented with wild thyme and mint. Landscapes dotted with olive groves and fields of lavender. Southern France is a feast for the senses, and it’s no wonder that the great painters of light and color —van Gogh, Cézanne and Matisse—came here for inspiration. We invite you to Provence next fall with popular Stanford professor Carolyn Lougee, who will share her love of Provençal history and culture with us. Join us as we take in the lovely scenery, engage in captivating lectures and savor authentic encounters with local people. What could be better?

C A R O LY N L O U G E E has been teaching history at Stanford since 1973. Her academic specialty is 17th-century French history, and her current research focuses on how the political and religious policies of Louis XIV affected families and communities in southern and western France. She says, “France is a country of infinite variety, and Provence is one of its most engaging provinces. Renowned for its cuisine, textiles and slow-paced country life, it’s both a history lover’s paradise and the focal point of some of France’s most difficult contemporary political problems.” During this program, she’ll discuss both the history of the region—the Romans, Ligurians, medieval popes, Italian humanists, Cathar heretics and Protestant rebels—and the current scene—how emergent economic and political turbulence challenges France’s ability to face the future.

Upon arrival in Marseille on Tuesday, transfer to our lovely five-star hotel in Aix-en-Provence. Take the re-mainder of the afternoon to get settled, perhaps enjoying a stroll on the hotel grounds where Paul Cézanne used to set up his easel and paint the nearby mountains. This evening, meet fellow participants at a welcome reception followed by dinner. HOTEL LE PIGONNET (10/24: D)

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25AIX-EN-PROVENCEAfter a welcome orientation and lecture, the rest of the day is devoted to exploring Aix-en-Provence. The capital of Provence, Aix is a treasure trove of art and architecture. Start the morning with a visit to the colorful outdoor market and a walking tour highlighting some of the most interesting hôtels particuliers, or private man-sions, built in the 17th and 18th centuries. After lunch, visit Paul Cézanne’s perfectly preserved home and studio, and savor the

views on a panoramic drive to the Montagne Ste. Victoire, one of Cézanne’s most famous sub-jects. Return to our hotel before dining together at a local bistro. HOTEL LE PIGONNET (B,L,D)

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26LES ALPILLES / ST. RÉMY / LES BAUXTake an excursion to Les Al-pilles, a small chain of moun-tains that forms the backdrop to St. Rémy and Saint-Paul de Mausole, the clinic where Vincent van Gogh stayed in 1889. In a creative flurry, he painted more than 140 works while there, including Starry Night. Also view Les Antiques, a collection of spectacular Ro-man monuments, including a tower-shaped mausoleum that is among the best-preserved in the world. Choose to enjoy an independent lunch and free time to explore St. Rémy or opt to indulge in an independent gourmet lunch at the Michelin two-star restaurant, L’Oustau de la Baumaniere. This afternoon, tour Les Baux, a classic Proven-çal village spectacularly situated atop a high rocky outcrop and crowned with the ruins of a me-dieval castle. HOTEL LE PIGONNET (B)

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27SENANQUE / ROUS-SILLON / AVIGNONThis morning, take a drive

through the beautiful Luberon, famous for its picturesque hill-top villages and truffles. Discov-er the 12th-century Cistercian Abbaye de Senanque, set amid fields of lavender and home to a small community of monks. Continue to Roussillon, a town drenched in sunlight and bright earth tones, set in the heart of one of the world’s largest ochre deposits. After lunch overlook-ing the famous quarries, depart for Avignon, home of the Palais des Papes, the largest medieval fortress in Europe. Return to Aix this evening for dinner on our own. HOTEL LE PIGONNET (B,L)

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28ARLES / CAMARGUEWalk the charming streets of Arles in the footsteps of van Gogh, who spent much of his time here just prior to his tragic decline. Our walking tour includes the ancient Roman amphitheater and the Church of St. Trophime, a jewel of Roman-esque architecture. After lunch on our own, head south into the Camargue, a lesser-known area of Provence. Located in the flood plain of the Rhône River, its marshes host a vast array of wildlife, plus it’s home to the local “cowboys” who maintain a traditional rancher’s way of life. Visit a private mas (ranch) whose owners treat us to a

W H A T T O E X P E C TThis seminar is designed to offer an authentic and educational experience in Provence. We consider it to be a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy. Excursions to some of Provence’s most significant historical sites and charming towns require that participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. The centers of many of the towns we visit are closed to traffic. Participants must be capable of extensive walking—two to three miles daily—in historic city centers, in museums and on city tours, as well as extended periods of standing while on excursions. We will encounter uneven terrain, including some dirt and cobblestoned paths, and hills. Participants must be comfortable walking for approximately 20 minutes at a time, potentially up and down moderate hills. Average temperatures at this time of year range from the low 50s (°F) in the mornings and evenings to the high 60s during the day. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older.
