The acquisition of BICMA Hygiene Tech-nologie GmbH by Winkler+Dünnebier GmbH (W+D) early this year has resulted in the merger of two important brands in hygiene machine construction. BICMA will now com-plement W+D’s Hygiene Solutions division.

The close cooperation with W+D

is also evident externally in the

relaunch of BICMA’s new corporate

design. Here we have integrated

the most striking elements of the

BICMA logo into the W+D logo and

color scheme. As with the new logo,

we are also integrating BICMA’s

technology and success factors

into W+D, strengthening them with

the competencies of a total of 500

employees and all the advantages

of a strong engineering company

with its own production and a global

service and sales force.

We can now flexibly adjust capacities

within the organization to meet your

wishes and ideas even better. As a

In 2013, W+D introduced W+D FLOWTOS, the world’s fastest two-lane tissue production and packaging system

with flow wrap single packaging technology, which has been in successful use around the world since then.

W+D is currently investigating the possibility of using flow wrap technology for the packaging of face wipes and

FemCare products.

The strength of the technology lies particularly in the possibility of wrapping the packaging film at the sides,

From June 13-14, 2018, W+D hosted the second Direct Mail Days in Neuwied, welcoming 40 percent more visitors than the previous year. 140 participants from 17 nations – many Eastern European and Asian countries, including Japan, among them for the first time – were excited with the event.

A total of seven excellent presenta-

tions full of facts and new ideas high-

lighted the enormous potential of

high-quality cross-media direct mail-

ings and their design potential. W+D

machine systems on display also

demonstrated the practical imple-

mentation possibilities of innovative

applications for envelope finishing.

Interest in the W+D machines was

high.

The W+D 410 Easy Enveloper can

emboss envelopes and delivers high

two-color print quality ranging from

sophisticated motifs to full-surface

gradients with an integrated flexo

printing module. When overprinting

finished envelopes, the latest W+D

Halm i-Jet in four-color digital logo

Direct Mail Days was also not

short on networking. “Despite an

extensive program, we gave our

customers and exhibitors enough

time to exchange ideas. So it was

an extremely successful event for all

sides, and we’ll certainly be holding it

again next year,” says Frank Eichhorn,

Managing Director of W+D. In ad-

dition to FEPE, companies such as

Stora Enso, Doneck Network, Eukalin,

Henkel, Irplast, Multiplastics and UPM

First sale of the new W+D Halm i-Jet

At the end of Direct Mail Days, W+D was able to announce the first sale of

the W+D Halm i-Jet digital printing press, which had just been launched in

Europe. Kaenguruh Kuvert GmbH was convinced by this inkjet system for

overprinting envelopes and will use it to expand its portfolio.

With our new inserting TIP series,

we would like to convince you of

our optional add-on modules. These

either increase the processing speed

and therefore output of your W+D

inserting machines or enhance their

processing quality and/or ease of

operation. The following two TIPs

will get us started:

/ Modified vacuum valve: This

module ensures reliable vacuum

flow and improves transport

when there is a higher vacuum

requirement. It can be retrofitted

to the W+D BB700 and BB550 XL.

/ More mobile gripper guide:

Designed for the W+D BB700 14k,

it avoids wear on gripper arms and

guide rails for longer tool life.

Scott Evans shows off Kenmore’s new logo rebranding as he helps drive the company forward with multiple new cutting-edge W+D direct mail converting solutions.

Kenmore turns change in the envelope industry into opportunities

the company has spent some $5

million on W+D envelope machines

over the last 4 years. For instance,

they bought two W+D 627 C envelope

machines in 2015 and 2016 and

have just installed a W+D 410 Easy

Enveloper for shorter direct mail runs.

“The W+D 410 Easy Enveloper can

emboss envelopes and features an

integrated flexo printing module that

delivers high two-color print quality

ranging from sophisticated motifs to

full-surface gradients,” he explains.

Kenmore is now awaiting delivery of a

larger W+D 326 BC envelope machine

that can process the most variable

range of formats and product types

– from envelopes to pockets. The

complete cut technology ensures the

most efficient path to productivity.

Various multiple-windowing and

seal-flap gumming options are even

possible. The new machine will enable

Kenmore to adapt to its customers’

diverse requirements and provide

individual, made-to-order products.

Less training, yet faster, more profitable and in higher qualityFor Kenmore, new machines are a

game changer for multiple reasons.

One is speed, however the company

feels that staffing is probably even

more important. “Our new machines

allow us to bring in the next generation

of adjusters. They are much easier to

use and to train on. Where an older

piece of equipment might take us a

year or two to train someone on, our

new equipment only takes us around

three months and these guys will be

up and running,” Evans explains.

W+D recommends regularly replacing sintered bronze flange sleeves on all your machines to easily avoid machine downtimes. This applies to inserting systems as well as envelope production and printing machines.

On the W+D BB700, for example, worn sintered bronze flange sleeves (see arrows in purple) cause the lever to tilt sideways, including the cam rollers. This means that clean envelope suction can no longer be guaranteed. The suction cups bounce and the envelope cannot be lifted.

If the sintered bronze flange sleeves are not replaced regularly, there will also be heavy wear on the bolt, which will then also have to be replaced at considerable expense (see blue arrow).

Continuous maintenance ensures that the suction opener functions optimally and that the envelopes are suctioned correctly. We recommend that you replace these components at regular intervals, on the BB700, for instance, every 5-10 million runs, depending on operating speed.

Elke Lenzen was appointed Head of Mechanical Engineering Hygiene Solutions / PCS at W+D this year. As head of the department, she has now assumed responsibility for five em-ployees – congratulations!

The trained machine technician’s

strengths lie above all in work orga-

nization and project management.

As Project Manager, Elke Lenzen car-

ries out international projects in the

personal care field and is current-

ly coordinating the workflows be-

tween W+D and the newly acquired

subsidiary BICMA from Mayen. She is

particularly pleased with the recent

growth and dynamic expansion of the

hygiene sector within the company.

Elke Lenzen has a grown daughter

and is involved in her local carnival.
