Annapolis royal - cradle of our nation annapolisroyal.com 003 Oct 2017 Ever wonder what makes your property a heritage property? Annapolis Royal has unveiled an exciting new section on the Town website; Heritage Properties! For years, heritage property information was only available through paper files; the Provincial Government started a project with these files creating the website www.HistoricPlaces.ca. Funding for this project was short-lived and the website was no longer maintained. This year, the Town decided to create its own database making the information accessible on the Annapolis Royal website. Each heritage property has current pictures followed by images from when the property was originally registered. There is information such as significant dates, character-defining elements, a map with a geographic location, and so much more! To access the list of heritage properties, go to www.AnnapolisRoyal.com and type Heritage Properties in the search bar to locate the database. From here, a few options are available to find a property: there is a search bar to type in a civic address, a map where you can search by clicking on a location in Town, and a list sorted numerically and by street name. By having the heritage property tab available on the Annapolis Royal website, we hope that residents and property owners will find the information easier to access. Ever wonder what makes your property a heritage property?

Come browse the new-est addition to our website.

There are more than 300 species of seaweed around Nova Scotia.

Mayor`s Message The official opening and dedication of Annapolis Royal's waterfront project was an inspiring event - with the coming together of the Town of Annapolis Royal and Bear River First Nations to dedicate the waterfront amphitheatre and mark it as a place of Mi'kmaq history and heritage; naming it OQWA'TITEK - "when they arrived'. The amphitheatre was decades in the making. Initially conceived by the Development Commission of the 1980's, but never built, the vision of a waterfront amphitheatre was resurrected by the members of the Town's Waterfront Development Committee, put into motion by the previous Mayor and Council, supported by private donors and funding agencies, and embraced by the current Council.

I want to acknowledge the tireless efforts and support of our Town staff, and the many others who contributed. The waterfront boardwalk, the boat building project, and remarkable amphitheatre have all been labours of love for the people involved. Even before it was completed, the amphitheatre was embraced by the community as a gathering place, and as a place of quiet reflection. But there was ultimately to be an even more remarkable purpose for this waterfront amphitheatre. The land upon which the amphitheatre is built brought the communities of Bear River First Nation and the Town of Annapolis Royal together - in the spirit of a shared history and a developing partnership of mutual respect and benefit. Elder Judy Pearson recalled at the dedication how she'd felt the presence of the ancestors, as she had stood with me on what was then Petit Parc last April - offering a prayer and blessing before the excavators moved in to start construction of the amphitheatre. We felt them again, as our communities came together to dedicate the amphitheatre and renew the historic bond of peace and friendship first established in 1605 between the Mi'kmaq people and the French explorers who established Port-Royal. To everyone involved: your inspiration, your support, your hard work, and your respect for the land and each other, will be remembered forever.

News From St. Luke’s

After a relaxed summer we are now preparing for a busy fall with worship, events, and youth programming being at the forefront of our efforts. The ¨After School Youth Group¨ met for the first time on Sept. 20 and a tour of the local police department was a great way to discuss with the youth the decisions and choices we make day to day that influence us. Our traditional Harvest Thanksgiving Service is to be held on Oct. 8, at 10 am, with Holy Communion. Sunday School begins on Oct. 1 and is held during the 10 am service. With pleasure we look forward to the Celebration of New Ministry Service to be held at 7 pm, at St.Luke’s, on Oct. 15 to acknowledge the installation of our new rector Rev. Nita Barteaux. Please join us for any or all of these activities and events.

Well, it is hard to believe that a month has gone by since I took up my new post as Chief of Police. August was truly a busy yet exciting month - to say the least. Between Canada 150-year celebrations, Natal day weekend, tall ships and other special events, we saw thousands of people come into visit the Town of Annapolis Royal. The great news is that there were no public safety issues or concerns arising out of these events and celebrations – a true testament to the good character of our citizens and visitors alike.

As you are aware, school is back in full swing and I would like to remind you to be extra vigilant in your driving while our children make their way to and from school. With fall on our doorstep we look forward to a slower pace as we move away from our very busy summer. This September 24th, marks the 40th year of the annual Police and Peace Officers Memorial parade and service in Ottawa, Ontario. This service pays tribute to those members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving the citizens of this great county. Sadly, we are reminded of this with the recent deaths of two police officers in the Atlantic region. The responsibility of protection and security is shared between the police and the community – we cannot do our job without the support of the community. This holds true with our town and I would like to thank everyone for their support so we can continue to enjoy a high level of peace and security in our community. I encourage anyone to reach out to us should you have any questions or concerns about their personal safety and security or that of your property. Creepin’ It Real In the spirit of Halloween and Ghost Town , the Town is having a decorating contest! Decorate your property in the most spook-tacular fashion and register it by emailing [email protected] for your chance to win $150 and a certificate of recognition. There will be two categories: one for the best residential property and one for the best business property. So let’s creep it real this Halloween.

Take it or Leaf it

Although there are differing opinions on whether you should rake the leaves off your lawn, it is very important to keep storm drains clear so that stormwater can properly drain. Stormwater flows from rooftops, over paved areas and bare soil, and through sloped lawns and fields. Storm drains and pipes are designed to move runoff from your neighborhood to the nearest body of water: if these are blocked then flooding can occur. Leaves can be disposed of in your green compost bin, backyard composter, the Town’s Leaf and Yard Waste yard or at the Valley Waste site in Lawrencetown.

BEWARE OF SCAMMERS!

SCAMMERS target people in several ways; in person, by phone, or by internet. SCAMS are alive and well and thrive mainly because people continue to fall victim. You may be interested to know that most scams by phone or internet are perpetrated by people outside of Canada. So, the question is why do people continue to fall victim to SCAMS. There are two main themes that motivate people: FEAR and MONEY. Always trust your instinct when it comes to a strange phone call, email, or a person knocking on your door. Delete unknown emails, hang up on a strange call, and don’t invite a stranger onto your proper-

ty or into your home. Contact Police immediately if you think you are being targeted. For more information please contact us General Police Line: 902-532-2427 or visit our Facebook page @ARPoliceD
