To make this City work better, we all need to do our homework. Here is part of Grace’s plan: 1. Keep employment here. Before we seek other professionals and experts from outside our City, let us ensure we have given our homegrown talent a chance to work with us.2. Effective communication between businesses, City departments and neighbourhoods. Residents want to be more engaged in decision making in planning and implementing stages of our infrastructure projects.3. Preserve the institutions that have made us unique. Let us maintain that friendly, western hospitality and show the world, that we welcome diversity and inclusiveness, because this contribution benefits us all.4. Maintain Calgary as a resilient, prosperous and thriving City. Our boom and bust cycles must not continue. We need to be more resilient and diversified economically, so we do not feel the pinch. 5. As we Transition to an Environmentally Sustainable Lifestyle, Calgarians need encouragement in public research and education to make this possible for business to create jobs. I will work to implement policies that encourage safe and affordable options for all demographics.

From organic fair-trade coffee to fitness trackers and vegan restaurants, signs of the clean living movement are popping up in neighbourhoods across Canada. More than a fad, it's a lifestyle transformation that's all about leading healthier and more sustainable lives. Here are some tips to try the trend.

ReFReSH youR HoMe. principles like simplicity and minimalism are key, so give your home an easy clean living makeover by decluttering and editing your space. go green by reducing your energy consumption, recycling and choosing sustainable materials for new purchases.

BooSt youR MeAlS. eating clean is less about eliminating taboo ingredients like sugar and more about wholesome balance with a varied diet that focuses on fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables. try adding superfoods like avocado, kale or quinoa to your favourite recipes.

Hit tHe gyM. with clean living, fitness and exercise are ways to get in shape and be heathier, not lose weight. Find a fun way to reap the mental and physical benefits of moving your body, like yoga, crossFit or “piloxing” — a fusion of pilates and boxing.

Avoid dRugS ANd AlCoHol. you don't have to give up your glass of red wine with dinner, but moderation is important. remember to always avoid drugs and alcohol

Jeff G. Bergen, CFAVice-President & Portfolio Manager 403-299-6564 [email protected] www.bergenwealth.ca

Portfolio management is not a competitive sport. It is an important individualized effort to achieve some predetermined financial goal while balancing one’s risk-tolerance level with the desire to enhance wealth. Good investment management practices are complex and time consuming, requiring discipline, patience, and consistency of application. Getting the right investment advice for your situation is a key part of managing wealth. But it’s just one part of a bigger picture. Planning for retirement, minimizing taxes, generating cash flow, or structuring an estate in a tax-efficient manner may also be required. Your situation changes, financial markets change and the factors that determine investment success can also change. Your wealth management strategy needs the flexibility to anticipate and respond to these changes. Planning for retirement can be relatively simple or complex based on your individual situation, here are just a few steps you will need to consider:• You need an idea of how much annual income you will require to

live comfortably• Next, you’ll need to calculate how much savings you need on the

day you retire to provide that income • Finally, you’ll need to plan how much you need to regularly save/

invest today in order to reach the savings you need to retire comfortably.

When minimizing taxes, do you contribute to your RRSP or TFSA? Perhaps both? When determining whether to contribute to your RRSP you’ll need to consider the tax bracket you’re in today, and the tax bracket

you anticipate you’ll be in the future. Do you begin drawing on your RRIF at age 65, at age 71, or somewhere in between? The size of your RRIF and pensions, and annual income are important considerations for this decision. At Bergen Wealth Management, we have a comprehensive approach to helping you achieve your goals in life. We give you the confidence to make sound financial decisions, freedom to live life the way you want and a clear roadmap for your financial future. As a client, you benefit from the personalized attention of the Bergen Wealth Management team, who take the time to understand your unique situation and tailor the investment and wealth management services you need. Community Civic Chat

in July of this year Federal minister of Finance, bill morneau, released a package of proposed tax reforms aimed at small businesses.

in the months since the announcement, my office has been inundated with letters, emails, and phone calls from medical specialists, farmers, accountants, and countless other incorporated professionals who are concerned these changes will dramatically affect their long-term commercial viability, their personal ability to save for retirement, and the overall competitiveness of the canadian marketplace.

as someone who has owned a small business in the past, i am very concerned these tax reforms, if implemented, could have serious implications for the many entrepreneurs in the signal hill riding. small businesses and private corporations are at the foundation of our economy, and those who would choose to start a business deserve credit for the risks that come with being a small business owner.

the three important tax measures the government is proposing to eliminate or reduce are:

• keeping investment income inside a small businesses to take advantage of a lower tax rate;

• conversion of a corporation’s regular income into capital gains; and,

• ending income sprinkling whereby owners of private corporations pay family members in a lower tax bracket to shield such dividends from being taxed.

in profitable business years, the tax strategies being targeted allow small business owners to put money into their savings, or toward their retirement, and generally offset some of the risks associated with owning their own business. in difficult economic periods, which alberta has endured for the last few years, small businesses often have to draw on such resources to make payroll and keep their doors open.

the current system also recognizes that, in many cases, the family members of small business owners are impacted by the risk of owning a small business.

these proposed changes will remove three important pillars that calgary based small business owners rely on to save for their future and to provide all the benefits that normal employees enjoy, such as vacation pay, medical benefits, maternity leave, and retirement savings.

i am staunchly opposed to these changes and continue to apply pressure in the house of commons, in parliamentary committees, in the media, and in our riding.

if you feel strongly about these proposed changes take a moment and make your voice heard - email the Finance minister at [email protected] and prime minister trudeau at [email protected].

while most of us do our best to be good neighbours, sometimes

we need a little guidance to do the right thing. that’s where the community standards bylaw comes in. updated at the end of 2016, the bylaw promotes good neighbour relationships and addresses community concerns by regulating noise, fire pit use, untidy properties, weeds and grass, graffiti—and nuisances such as flyers.

one of the areas updated in the 2016 review refers to flyers, including non-commercial flyers. if you have a ‘no flyer’ sign visibly posted at your home, it’s a violation of the bylaw to deliver flyers to your door. with the municipal election just around the corner, you should be aware that election advertising is exempt from this bylaw along with newspaper subscriptions, community newsletters and information provided by government and elected officials.

For more information, visit calgary.ca and enter community standards bylaw in the search bar. if you do continue to receive flyers despite having a ‘no flyer’ sign at your home, you can call 311 or submit a service request using our 311 app or on the city’s web site.

ditCH tHe diStRACtioNSeating in front of the tV, computer, or playing on your phone causes the body to be calorically full but leaving your brain wanting more. distracted eating usually results in over eating. your brain doesn’t remember eating thus feels hunger even though your body may be full.

tip: instead of the tV or computer screen switch on some relaxing music.

SleeP dePRivAtioNLess than 7 hours of sleep/night disrupts our gut hormone regulation. these hormone disruptions can cause increases in hunger cravings and mindless eating.

tip: start building a relaxing bedtime routine (reading, taking a bath, journaling, gratitude’s, listening to relaxing music). strive for 7-9 hours of sleep/night.

FiBRethe average canadian needs between 25-50 grams of fibre/day. most of us only get 10 grams/day. Fibre is fabulous as it helps keep us regular, stabilizes blood sugars, and delays stomach emptying resulting in us feeling fuller for longer.

tip: add in brand buds, fibre or chia in your yogurt or cereal, beans/legumes, vegetables and fruits.

late night killer cravings:eveR exPeRieNCe:• ravenous evening hunger?

• inability to feel satisfied or full after dinner?

• going back to the fridge for more?

• craving salty, fatty, sugary foods?

• it is probably not due to lack willpower!

what you do in the earlier part of your day often affect evening cravings.

to decrease those late-night killer cravings, i have listed 6 tips that will help you be successful in beating these cravings:

BReAkFAStyou may have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. missing breakfast can create havoc on your hunger cues. ever try to drive your car without gas? the result is not pretty. starting your day without breakfast is like having an empty gas tank. Luckily the human body adapts when we leave it on empty. the liver blasts out stored sugar when the body is under fueled. it also adapts by suppressing your hunger cues under fueling can lead to increased irritability, decreasing your decision-making skill/cognition, increasing fatigue, to name a few. these things may not be noticeable

to you. in the evening, your body starts reminding you that you need fuel. this is when the late-night cravings start.

tip: not hungry in the morning? this could have occurred because your hunger cues have been suppressed. if you can’t stomach a full breakfast start with something small ie) piece of fruit, nuts, small yogurt, home made muffin.

doN’t SkiP tHe CARBScarbohydrates are the bodies preferred fuel source. when this is eliminated it can lead to us missing key nutrients, increased food cravings and irritability. instead look for balance meals.

tip: incorporate whole grains into your meals. ie) brown rice, barley, oatmeal, whole grain bread

HydRAtioNadults needs between 2-3 Liters of fluids/day. the body can mistake the hunger and thirst cues. stay hydrated to help reduce body confusion.

tip: sip on water, teas, or carbonated water though out the day.

Hello Calgary Bow,october is here, and i hope that the return to school and the autumn routine has been smooth. i very much appreciate the feedback that my office has received from families regarding bill 1: an act to reduce school Fees which was implemented at the beginning of this school year. two years ago, our government ran on a platform commitment to reduce the burden of school fees on alberta families and i am very proud that we have been able to follow through on that commitment. this school year alone alberta families will save nearly $60 million on textbooks, workbooks, printing and paper costs incurred by schools.

thank you to those residents who have expressed interest in the current efforts of the honourable minister david eggen, who spent the summer gathering input from albertans on ways the government can fight racism, foster acceptance and promote an inclusive society. the online survey that was made available to provide feedback from albertans closed on september 22. i will be happy to keep you updated with the findings as the information becomes available. unfortunately our communities are not immune as we learned earlier this year when the sikh society of calgary temple in west springs was vandalized with hate speech and swastikas. there was also the community mural in bowness which, just days before the annual stampede breakfast was vandalized with racist hate speech. thanks to quick action at my office, the bowness business improvement area (bia), the bowness community association and many concern residents, we were able to quickly remove the vandalism and refresh the entire mural!

through the month of september, with the help of many gracious volunteers, i was able to go door-to-door and talk with neighbours about the things that matter most to them. special thanks for the honourable minister of health and deputy premier, sarah hoffman for taking the time to join us and hear from calgary-bow residents. Legislative session is set to commence on october 31, and i feel confident in my abilities to represent the voices of calgary-bow in the alberta Legislature. i invite you to stay connected with the happenings of the upcoming legislative session by contacting my office with feedback, questions and ideas. we are happy to hear from you!
