A NEWSLETTER FOR

ST. FRANCIS’ EPISCOPAL CHURCH

From the Interim Rector

Peace be with you.

Happy St. Francistide!

Franciscans around the world have been celebrating St. Francis since the 17th of September, the Feast of the

Stigmata when he received the five wounds of Jesus two years before his death in 1226. We as a parish family

are indeed fortunate to be part of a large group of people who have over the last 800 years been

commemorating the feast of our patron saint. On October 2nd Fr. Bob will be presiding at our feast here

which will include the "Blessing of the Animals". So don't forget to bring those special friends of yours for

their feast day blessing.

While writing this I'm pondering the wonderful weekend that 50 of us shared at the Bishop's Ranch. In spite

of the exceptionally warm weather we really enjoyed our time together-especially the beautiful pool! The

Sunday Eucharist which our Venerable Archdeacon David Stickley prepared for us was a huge success and at

the last-minute we had a volunteer pianist, Susan. Our meals, fellowship and community spirit was at an

all-time high. A hearty thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this weekend happen.

As most of your know I will be away from 1st of October returning on the 18th. During my time away,

Fr. Kossler will be available for any emergencies. I look forward to seeing you on my return.

Peace and goodwill,

Dominic, tssf+

Greetings from the Senior Warden

Some of us just returned from the Parish Retreat up at the Bishop’s Ranch.. The time over the weekend is a

wonderful chance to visit and catch up with each other, tell stories, laugh and listen. I’m always drawn to the

mosaic of sounds at the Ranch. Some sounds range from the quiet: the birds opening the day with their dawn

chorus, the soft voices of friends sitting together telling about their grandchild’s latest accomplishment or the

crickets closing out the day. Other sounds are much more boisterous: the Friday night barbeque gathering,

to the children playing in the swimming pool, and the laughs at the funny movie we watch Saturday night.

Sunday’s church service at the Ranch had a special surprise; a lovely woman named Susan played the piano

for us - enriching our hymns and adding to the music of the sounds at the Ranch. Listen to the sounds weaving

around and through you, and be thankful for all of God’s gifts.

Stewardship 2016

As our frigid San Francisco summer gives way to a balmy fall, our thoughts turn to the events of the season -

the Giants' run for a wildcard slot... the presidential election... and... the 2017 St. Francis' Episcopal Church

Stewardship campaign.

2016 has been a terrific year so far at St. Francis' - our liturgical and community life is as strong as ever. Our

energetic full-time and volunteer clergy led by rector Beth Sherman guided us through a majestic, solemn

Lenten season capped with an exuberant Easter service and Sunday after Sunday of Holy Eucharist, reflection,

and thoughtful sermons; our service to the community via the food bank and other outreach continues with

vigor, and our coffee hours, sunday school, social events, vestry and committee meetings, the Altar Guild's

work, and all the other aspects of our community are going strong.

And we've seen some changes as well - for example, Rob Kerman and Mark Lieu stepping back from years of

service leading our music program, the passing of some beloved parishioners, and Beth going on sabbati-

cal. These changes - some permanent and some temporary - are readily visible to us, and the subject of a lot of

discussion.

But there are other, deeper, changes underway that are less visible - changes that we need to come to grips

with if we are to safeguard the future of our parish. Specifically, I am talking about demographic changes to

St. Francis, changes that result from two powerful forces simultaneously coming to bear. From one side: the

ever-decreasing affordability of life in San Francisco, especially if you are trying to raise a family. From the

other side: the apparently inexorable national trend away from church attendance. In the middle lies the result,

parishes such as ours, where attracting new members is hard, and retaining them in the face of the financial

challenges of life in San Francisco is even harder.

Time and again, with prayer and goodwill, we have risen to the occasion to support our parish in every way -

contributing our time, effort, and financial resources in the support of St. Francis' mission. I am confident that

this year will be no exception.

Prayer List in the Sunday Bulletin

In the words of more than one member of this Parish, “prayer does work.” In an effort to be sensitive to the

needs of all parishioners, their friends, and families, please take a look at the prayer lists in the Sunday

Bulletin. Beginning October 1, unless specifically requested, names on the prayer lists will be removed at the

first of each month. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation.

Note from Kathy Capp

Kasey is much better. She is out of the hospital and will start back to work part time next week. We are so

thankful for the concern and prayers of our beloved Saint Francis’ Church

NEWS FROM THE DEANERY Alice Gates

The San Francisco Deanery of the Episcopal Church is made up of representatives from each of the Episcopal

churches and organizations within the boundaries of San Francisco. The Diocese of California is made up of

six deaneries. St. Francis has four lay representatives and two clergy representatives. The deanery meets four

times a year, once each quarter and our representatives are voting members at the Annual Convention of the

Diocese which is held in October.

The Deanery business at the meeting which was held on September 10 at Trinity + St. Peter primarily covered

items which will be discussed and voted on at the convention. There will be six resolutions under considera-

tion at the convention:

Support of Proposition 62 on the November ballot.

Replacement of compact fluorescent lights with energy saving units

Reducing gun violence

Support for HR 3226 – Regarding trafficking and slavery

Free speech with regard to boycott, divestment and sanctions

Accompanying our Episcopal sisters and brothers in the Holy Land

.(For more information on any of these resolutions go to diocal.org)

Other items of business covered were:

Treasurer’s report: The deanery has received 100% participation from all parishes and the balance in the

Deanery account at present is $10,728.86. One disbursement was made to the Millennium Development Goals

of $68.98.

Deanery Grants: The due date for all Deanery applications is October 7. The applications should be

emailed to Regan Murphy, Deanery Secretary at [email protected].

Official Youth Presence: Melia Young (Grace Cathedral) and Kira Smith (St. Cyprian’s) will be the youth

representatives at the Convention.

Representatives to the National Convention will be elected at the Diocesan Convention as well as Diocesan

Standing Committee and Diocesan Executive Council. For candidates bios see diocal.org.

Help Out Family Link

The Family Link, a guesthouse for families of gravely ill patients hospitalized in San Francisco, is run by

Sister Ruth (an 8 a.m. parishioner), and Fr. Dominic is a board member. We have been accepted as a

beneficiary of this year's Castro Street Fair and desperately need volunteers to work at the registration booth.

This is a plum job because our volunteers get to sit down, and there is shade cover. The fair is on Sunday

October 2nd and volunteers offer 2 - 4 hours of service. If any St Francis’ folks can offer time it will be greatly

appreciated. All the money taken in at the fair is divided between the beneficiaries and is based on the number

of volunteer hours served by each nonprofit. Contact Sr. Ruth Hall at [email protected] or call

415-200-6689, or contact Fr. Dominic.

Jean Mackenzie

Jean Mackenzie, a long-time member of this Parish passed away peacefully on August 26th. A memorial

service is planned for October 8, at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Bob Kossler will celebrate and The Rev. Charles

Ramsden will preach.

NEWS FROM THE FOOD BASKET

I am your friendly Food Basket and my place is behind the last pew on Sunday mornings. People make me

very happy when they bring non-perishable food items for me and my friends down in the Tenderloin at the

Bay Area Women's and Children's Center. I have been receiving lots of food lately. I especially like cereal,

peanut butter, soups, canned vegetables, canned fruit, pasta and sauce, tuna and things like that. Eight full

boxes were taken down to the Center last May. Now the cupboard where I keep food is nearly empty, so I

hope you all think about refilling it so the children of the Tenderloin have good things to eat during the fall

months. Thanks for all you do. I'll be looking for you on Sunday morning.

Godly Play

Below is our schedule for the fall.

October

2 - "The Good Samaritan"

9 and 16 "The Sower"

23 and 30 "The Pearl"

November

7, 14 and 21 - "The Good Shephard"

December

4, 11, 18 - The Advent Story

For further information, please contact Beverly Popek [email protected].

Our Sunday School use the Godly Play curriculum, which is very easy to follow. In addition, we supplement

with art days and special projects to provide some variety and breaks for storytellers. Some of our projects

have included making sandwiches, cards and communion bread. Is there a project you'd like to head

up? Would you love to tell a story? We provide training and support.

Godly Play is a complete service in itself for the youth. In addition to having a story (lesson) and time to re-

flect through play (i.e., art or discussion among themselves), we end each session with a prayer circle. During

this time, the children pray and have the opportunity to share and support each other. The number of children

who attend Godly Play vary from week to week. Our "high" number has been 12 and "low" two. We average

about five children a week.

BRAID Wendy Dwyer

Our St Francis’ BRAID team met with Reverends Rebecca Edwards and Christopher Chase on Saturday,

July 30th, for our introductory mentor training for foster youth. Our mission is to surround our youth with a

consistent and an unconditional loving presence. I am so grateful to be part of this fledgling team, and the

training we received was helpful and clear. We shared conversations and real-life scenarios concerning

listening, empathy, giving advise vs problem solving, and discussed principals of mentoring. Rebecca and

Chris provided us with quality and empathetic training. We are in the process of completing Diocesan-

approved training on how to protect children and mentors and promote healthy boundaries through

the "Shield the Vulnerable" organization. We will keep you posted on our progress and we are all looking

forward to our first meeting and weaving our lives together. For more information and amazing stories found

on Rebecca and Chris' blogspot, please go to www.braidmission.org
