As our communities continue to grow, I am
committed to bringing more cultural city-sponsored events to the Leeward Coast, so that we can give
our residents a platform to proudly share the arts within our culturally-rich communities.
On September 25-26, 2016, residents came out for a weekend of excitement, activities
and family fun at Maili Beach Park. For the first time in 7 years, residents, ohana and
keiki got to finally once again experience the popular Wai‘anae Sunset on the Beach!
The weekend was absolutely spectacular —attendees enjoyed a variety of food vendors, an
entertainment stage, a classic car show, a community market, and a keiki center filled with
activities for the Waianae youth. Additionally, the
highlight of the night was a beautiful fireworks display which began at dusk on Saturday evening.
This event was presented by the Wai‘anae Coast
Community Foundation with support from City and County of Honolulu, Hawaiian Electric Company,
and other local business and community sponsors.
I would like to express a warm mahalo to Patty Kahanamoku Teruya, President of the
Waianae Coast Community Foundation for her tremendous efforts in bringing this event back to our Waianae Coast. Longtime Waianae residents have always reminisced about this event
and were thankful that their ohana & keiki were finally able to experience this memorable
event once again.

On September 30, 2016, Councilmember Pine was proud to recognize Patty Teruya, President of the Waianae Coast Community Foundation and the Dudoit family on behalf of the grand opening of the Makana O Ke Akua Shop & Save and Outreach Center in Waianae.
This project was an amazing effort put on by Patty Teruya and community leaders throughout our Waianae Coast. Volunteers spent the past 4 months renovating the old abandoned courthouse building and transforming it into a new thrift shop and outreach center for our community.

A makeshift crosswalk (pictured above) near Leihoku Elementary School raised safety concerns
from Waianae residents. DTS is currently in the process of accepting Leihoku Street.
September Constituent Report
During the month of September, Councilmember Pine’s office received a total of 27 calls from residents throughout the Leeward Coast, requesting City help— of which 11 calls/inquiries were directly from Waianae Coast residents. Of the 11 calls, the top 3 types of calls fell under the categories of Environment, Development and Transportation.
Issues Addressed
Leihoku Street— Residents reached out to Councilmember Pine regarding a makeshift crosswalk near Leihoku Elementary School.
Residents were concerned about safety and were wondering if the City would install official crosswalks. According to the Department of Transportation Services (DTS), the City is currently in the process of accepting Leihoku Street. Crosswalks are warranted on the south and east legs of the intersection on Leihoku Street and Pokaihene Place. After Leihoku Street is completely transferred over to the City, DTS will then be able to provide an estimate on the time of completion for future crosswalks in the area.

Illegal Dumping Site— A Lualualei resident contacted Councilmember Pine’s office regarding illegal dumping occurring near Pokai Bay. In response, Councilmember Pine submitted a Request for Investigation & Services Report and connected with the Department of Environmental Services. The Refuse Division investigated the buildup of trash and determined that the trash was from squatters who had been dumping on this private property. On September 2, 2016, refuse crews cleared the trash and issued a Notice of Violation to the private property owner. Following the cleanup, outreach services were requested from Kealahou West Oahu and Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center to aid squatters in the area. Kawili Street Property— Residents have inquired about development on a property on Kawili Street, in which a basil farm is
currently being constructed. DPP investigated this lot and has confirmed that the parcel is P-2, which means that crop production is permitted in this area. Previously. on June 23, 2016, DPP had issued a Notice of Violation to the owner for grading without a permit—subsequent inspections by DPP indicate the owner has satisfactorily restored the graded area, including debris removal and revegetation.
