How We Got to Now, a new six-part series co-created and hosted by best-selling science and technology author and Bay Area resident Steven Johnson, examines the fascinating stories of the unlikely people whose ideas have made our modern world possible. The series looks at the little-known stories of the men and women who came up with revolutionary innovations that have had far-reaching consequences beyond their original intent and play a role in just about every aspect of our daily lives. “It is very easy to take many of the conveniences that we encounter every day for granted. Most people wouldn’t think sipping a glass of ice water in the summer is very remarkable. Yet clear glass, clean water and the ability to keep ice frozen in warm weather are all the products of innovations without which the world as we know it today would not exist,” says
Johnson. “And amazingly, the amateur inventors, entrepreneurs and tinkerers who made our modern world possible have nearly been forgotten to history.” The enthusiasm, curiosity and humor that are hallmarks of Johnson’s award- winning writing on popular science are evident on screen as he goes to great lengths and distances to illustrate how these ideas shape our lives. For example, in San Francisco he climbs into a rat- and cockroach-infested sewer that keeps the above-ground world clean; in Dubai, he goes skiing in a gigantic indoor winter wonderland in the middle of the desert; and in Venice, he meets a descendant of Angelo Barovier, the first person to create crystal-clear glass — an invention that sparked a chain reaction of innovations that gave rise to deep space exploration, global communication and much more.
How We Got to Now with Steven Johnson premieres Wednesday, October 15, on KQED 9 with back-to-back episodes beginning at 9pm.
The other four episodes will air Wednesdays at 10pm through November 12.
How We Got to Now Hear extraordinary stories behind remarkable ideas that made modern life possible.
The ideas are broken down into six themes that encompass the pillars of modern civilization: Cold, Time, Light, Clean, Glass and Sound.

News
Earlier this year, KQED created the multiplatform California Politics and Government Desk, expanding statewide coverage of important issues in politics and state government on radio, television and online. Explains Senior Editor John Myers, “We’re trying to build on the good work that KQED already does in this area and make it bigger and stronger,” adding, “I’ve spent most of my career covering California politics and government, and this is the most exciting venture in which I’ve ever been involved. As far as I know, we’re the only news organization in the state that’s launched such a project.”
John and colleague Scott Detrow, The California Report’s Sacramento Bureau Chief, are both based in Sacramento, but it’s important to reiterate that they will not simply be covering the capital. Notes John, “One of our goals is not to just report on issues from the top down. We want to find new ways to show how California government works throughout the state. We’re also looking to bring more transparency to government and help spark a dialogue with people about the way their tax dollars are spent.” As we move
through this year’s midterm elections and into the future, KQED will be providing “a valuable resource and encourage new ways to look at politics and government.”

Production of Jacques Pépin: Heart & Soul begins this month at KQED’s San Francisco studios. Like his previous series, Heart & Soul will feature Jacques teaching the skills necessary for success in the kitchen, sharing favorite recipes and demonstrating the timeless cooking techniques that have made him a master. It will also highlight key periods of his life and his 60 years in the kitchen, travel with him to his home, and include stories about his friendships with other chefs, like Julia Child, and about some of the “little problems” that have occurred on camera over the years. Over the coming weeks and months, KQED’s food blog Bay Area Bites will feature behind-the-scenes photos and video of Heart & Soul’s production as well as updates on Jacques’ whereabouts and events leading up to the series premiere in fall 2015. Follow along with us.

KQED Newsroom and QUEST have joined forces to create a program that examines the science behind some of the key issues in next month’s election. The half-hour special Science at the Ballot Box, hosted by Newsroom’s Thuy Vu, includes a look at an initiative in San Benito County that asks voters to ban the controversial oil and gas extraction technique of hydraulic fracturing.
With California in its third year of drought, the program also discusses Proposition 1, a $7.5 billion water bond that would pay for new reservoirs, conservation, water recycling and other programs. The special also explores the labeling of genetically engineered food, which is on the ballot in Oregon and Colorado. California’s labeling initiative, Proposition 37, lost by a small margin in 2012. Now labeling advocates are applying the lessons they learned in California to their campaign in Oregon.
Science at the Ballot Box airs on KQED 9 Friday, October 24, at 8pm on KQED Newsroom and Wednesday, October 29, at 7:30pm on QUEST.

But this valley is rich in many ways — culturally, academically, artistically and geographically. It’s a place with many identities, a place that can’t be pinned down. But you have to get off the highway to really tell its stories.
— Sasha Khokha, KQED’s Central Valley bureau chief
When The California Report opened a Central Valley Bureau in Fresno in 2002, it was because KQED recognized how important this region was becoming to the entire state. It’s a place where a public radio reporter can’t just parachute in. You have to call this place home to really understand its complexities. I’ve done just that for the last ten years. My challenge is to get listeners brushing their teeth in San Francisco, or stuck in traffic in San Diego, to care about people like Gladys Colunga — a farmworker mom with six kids whose well has gone dry in the drought. When she flushed the toilet one day, dirt came up. She can’t do dishes or laundry. Nor can she afford a new well, which costs tens of thousands of dollars.
It’s no secret: to most of the rest of California, the Central Valley is the armpit of the state. Coming over the Tehachapis or the Altamont pass, people from the Bay Area or Los Angeles usually just whizz past on I-5 or US 99, on their way to somewhere else. One friend from Berkeley even calls the San Joaquin Valley “the great nothing.” Ask most Californians from the coast, and they probably have the vague notion that Central Valley is hot and that their food comes from here. But it’s a much more complex place than you might think. A recent half-hour special for The California Report explored life in the valley beyond those stereotypes. Host Scott Shafer and I talked to farmers and farmworkers struggling with the drought, as well as an urban poet, homeless ac-tivists and the world’s oldest square dance caller.

Emperor penguins cross a treacherous frozen sea to reach their breeding grounds. Rockhoppers brave the world’s stormiest seas only to come ashore and face a daunting assault up a 300-foot cliff, hopping most of the way up. Tropical Humboldt penguins negotiate predatory sea lions and vampire bats to reach their desert nests. The hard work for all the penguins finally pays off when their tiny, vulnerable chicks begin to hatch. Penguins: Spy in the Huddle airs Wednesday, October 1 and 8, at 8pm on KQED 9.

Douglas Carter Beane’s acclaimed Tony Award–nominated play The Nance stars stage and screen actor Nathan Lane. The play tells the story of Chauncey Miles (Lane), a headline nance (a parody of a gay man) in the twilight of New York burlesque’s era, who is gay. Integrating burlesque sketches into his drama, Beane paints the portrait of a homosexual man, living and working in the secretive and dangerous gay world of 1930s New York, whose outrageous antics on the burlesque stage stand in marked contrast to his offstage life. Airs Friday, October 10, at 9pm on KQED 9.

A coach races up to a country house with a hysterical passenger shrieking, “Murder!” What better way to continue Jane Austen’s immortal novel Pride and Prejudice? This delicious homage to Austen, adapted from P.D. James’ clever whodunit features an all-star cast, including Anna Maxwell Martin (The Bletchley Circle) and Matthew Rhys (The Americans). Elizabeth and Darcy never knew marriage would be like this! Premieres Sunday, October 26, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Many of us don’t want to talk about it or think about it, but extreme weather and a changing planet are a given for the 21st century. The phrase “climate fatigue” describes a public already saturated with bad news about our future. It’s a daunting problem, but there are success stories. Join moderator Lesley Stahl, correspondent for 60 Minutes, for a roundtable discussion that applies the expertise and perspective of Stanford’s brain trust and the vision of global leaders to what may be the most compelling issue of our time.
Panelists include George P. Shultz, former secretary of state; Alvaro Umana, Costa Rica’s first minister of energy and enviroment; Bina Venkataraman, senior advisor for climate change innovation in the Executive Office of the President; Chris Field, founding director of the Carnegie Institution’s department of global ecology; JB Straubel, co-founder of Tesla.
