The Himalayas are defined by superlatives. They defy both description and comprehension while teaching us about the awesome power and grandeur of nature. Born during the ice ages, they form the highest mountain range in the world and stretch across Asia for 2,000 miles. The mountains themselves are considered sacred, and the rivers that spring from them are worshipped as holy. Their imposing beauty may appear cold and forbidding, but the Himalayas are actually rich with a surprising array of plants and animals. Snow leopards, wolves, bears, remarkable monkeys and foxes unlike any others, spiders, snakes, giant bees, and high-flying birds live here, as well as enormous goat-like creatures that may have been the source of the original golden fleece for which Jason and the Argonauts searched. These mountains will simply take your breath away!

Irish cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson spent almost 600 days filming Broken Tail and his family for some of the finest tiger documentaries ever made. Broken Tail was the most charismatic tiger cub ever seen in Ranthambore, one of India’s best-protected tiger reserves. But suddenly, and without warning, he abandoned his sanctuary and went on the run, moving through farmland and scrub until he was killed by a train nearly 200 miles from its home. To track Broken Tail’s incredible journey, Colin and his soundman Salim retrace the tiger’s path and piece together the cub’s last days—and through his story reveal the fate of India’s few surviving tigers. Follow their journey Sunday, February 20, at 8pm on KQED 9.

As was noted in this space last month, KQED Public Media has added five new people to its Community Advisory Panel (CAP). CAP members advise the KQED Board of Directors on the educational and cultural needs of the diverse communities served by KQED, KQEI, KTEH, and KQET. An Extraordinary life in Extraordinary timesBelva Davis is a history maker, an award-winning journalist, and a pioneering feminist. You can now add author to that list. From her humble beginnings in the Deep South during the Great Depression, she broke into journalism and made the move from segregated newspaper and radio work to become the first black female television reporter/anchor on the West Coast—hired by CBS affiliate KPIX in 1966. For the past 18 years, she’s been hosting KQED’s weekly news and public affairs program This Week in Northern California. She’s written about it all in her memoir, Never in My Wildest Dreams: A Black Woman’s Life in Journalism (PoliPoint Press, February 2011). Belva admitted that she started writing the book in 2005. And stopped and started and stopped and started. To help finally get her story

out (and cut it down to a publisher-friendly length), she enlisted the help of longtime Bay Area journalist Vicki Haddock. Belva joked that to do this kind of work you need either a co-writer or a therapist. There are many personal stories in the book that she’d never before discussed with anyone, including her family, and she described the process as both “unique and painful.” Her promotional tour kicks off with a City Arts and Lectures conversation on February 1 with PBS NewsHour co-anchor and senior correspondent Judy Woodruff. Then she’s off to the East Coast for speaking engagements from Atlanta to Washington, D.C.

You’re an expert on Bay Area life. No journalist or commentator understands your job, your neighborhood, and how you’re impacted by Bay Area news better than you do. Now your expertise can help keep Bay Area residents better informed about what’s happening in their communities through the Public Insight Network at KQED. The network is part of a nation-wide project founded by American Public Media that relies on people from all walks of life to help shape news coverage. It blends the public’s knowledge with journalism’s core values: accuracy, integrity, and public service. “The network is an extension of KQED’s commitment to the community,” explains Amanda Stupi, the KQED News Public Insight editor. “I’ve always admired how much KQED’s newsroom respects its audience and the ideas the public pitches. This project galvanizes that commitment.” Stupi recently answered a few questions about the network and explained why you (yes, you!) should be a part of it.

What is the Public Insight Network?In the public insight model of journalism, the public directly impacts editorial decisions. The network literally gives the public a seat at the KQED News daily editorial meeting. People in the community will help generate story ideas and deepen reporting on existing stories.

How does the network operate?First, people join. The simplest way is to go to KQEDnews.org/publicinsight and fill out the online sign-up form.

I look over every sign-up form and bring back any story ideas I find to the newsroom. I also coordinate with reporters and editors to write short surveys to send to sources. Some are more general, to help gather back-ground information or story ideas. Other times they are more focused, to help us find, say, residents of a certain city or people in a particular industry. After vetting potential sources to ensure journalistic accuracy and integrity, I report to the newsroom on trends I’m noticing. At that point, I or another reporter will contact the people we think can contribute to the story. We will never publish comments without permission, and every journalist with access to the network undergoes training on how to ensure privacy.

Why would someone join the network?First, I think everyone wants to ensure that their community—however they define that—is accurately represented. What better way to do that than to be a source? Second, there’s the potential to be quoted on-air in a news story—and that’s just cool.

What’s your favorite part of being the Public Insight editor?As a Bay Area native, I take a lot of pride in shaping KQED’s coverage of Northern California. This is a vast place—both in terms of geography and demographics. It’s important to me that KQED’s reporting is accurate and that people see themselves in it.
