Milford Rotary ClubA Message From The President

The Milford Rotary Club, chartered in 1937, is part of the worldwide humanitarian service organization that

includes over 33,000 clubs and over 1 million members. I was proud to serve as president as the Milford Club

marked its 75th year of working together to help promote and build a better commu-

nity while working with Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation to improve

the quality of life throughout the world.

Thanks to your support of our fundraisers, such as this Publication, our annual

spring Wine/Micro-Beer and Food Tasting, and our new fundraiser, a Youth Golf

Tournament held at the Hopedale Country Club, we are able to support a wide vari-

ety of community programs as well as assist in international projects around the globe.

The following is just a sample of what we do.

The Rotary Summer Red Cross Swim has helped 11,443 kids learn to swim since the

program began 61 years ago at White’s Beach in Mendon. We were excited to see a 26%

increase in registration this year. Again this year, the club awarded four $1,000 schol-

arships to area seniors who embrace the essence of "Service Above Self" during their

High School years.In the spring, we selected and funded 5 high school sophomore delegates to the

Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) at Worcester State College. Rotary also supports the Milford Youth

Center, including its summer camp program as well as the Salvation Army’s Youth Camp.

I am proud to report that sixty two (62%) of all funds we spent this year were invested in local Youth

Programs and/or Educational Programs. Another 22% was invested in local or global Humanitarian

Programs.Thanks to the kindness of many businesses in the local area, we hosted the entire Hopedale Junior Class for

"Career Day" in November. Students shadowed business people for the morning and joined Rotarians for

lunch at Restaurant 45 in Medway.

This year the Club was honored to sponsor Patrick Reimonn, a junior from Hopkinton High School, who

spent the school year as a Rotary Eastern States Exchange Student (ESSEX) in Chile. We also hosted another

ESSEX exchange student, Jenny Trapp, from Germany. Jenny attended Milford High School during the 2012-

2013 school year as a sophomore. I want to extend a special thanks to Jenny’s host families, who welcomed her

into their homes, during her year in Milford.

Our members are also strong supporters of the Rotary International Foundation and its goal of making the

world a better, more peaceful, place to live. One of the Foundation’s major goals is to create a Polio Free World.

The Milford Rotary Club is proud to be one of the leading clubs in District 7910 in donations per member to

the Rotary International Foundation.

We hope that by glancing through this publication, you will get a true insight into the scope of Rotary’s pro-

jects, both within the community and beyond. We hope this publication also helps you capture the spirit of fel-

lowship and fun that we enjoy at our weekly meetings.

The center pages present a photo of each Rotarian and his or her profession. I encourage you to contact any

Rotarians Learn About Casinos FromSpeakers With Different Views

Casinos were the hot topic this year so, in order tobe better informed, the Milford Rotary Club hostedthree speakers who shared their views on casinodevelopment. First, Milford Selectman BrianMurray, top right, explained the process, procedures,deadlines, challenges and the role of town officials.Next, Connecticut novelist, Robert H. Steele, talkedabout his historical novel “The Curse, Big TimeGambling’s Seduction of a Small New England Town.”Steele, who represented his CT District in Congressprior to the arrival of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun,also lived near the Mashantucket PequotReservation in Ledyard, CT. He presented a first-hand account of the casino impact on the area’stowns. A few weeks later, the Club hosted Thomas"Tony" Sheridan, (lower right) CEO of the EasternConnecticut Chamber of Commerce and former elected town official, who talked about the positive effects of the casi-nos for that area’s residents. Milford TV taped the presentations by Steele and Sheridan and presented both views onMilford TV.

Rotary holds Inaugural Youth Golf TournamentOn Monday, August 12th the Milford Rotary Club teed-up a new fund raising

event. The club decided to turn to the ever popular and sometimes over-done venueof golf. The twist being that this was no mere golf outing where grown men andwomen would come to take out their frustrations on a little ball, while being reward-ed with a dinner, some prizes and the pleasure of a day off from work. No, this wasnot an outing at all: it was a tournament. And the golfers who came to this event,well let’s just say that for the summer…golf is their job and they were eager to tee-off in Rotary’s new fundraiser, The Milford Rotary Youth Golf Tournament. And byall accounts, it was a success. All funds raised by this event go towards our highschool scholarship fund.

The Hopedale Country Club, who graciously closed the course for the day, hostedthe event, so these young people could play and test their skills in a sport they love.With four flights ranging from ages 10 to 18, these young golfers took on a beautifuland sometimes feisty golf course and carded some great scores.

Following the tournament, lunch was provided and the hardware was handed out.Top Medalist in each age flight was: Age 10-12 Flight- Matt Boldy; Age 13-14 Flight-Anthony Arcudi; Age 15-16 Flight- Michael Boldy; Age 17-18 Flight- Tyler Irwin.

Captain Dave Irwin, chairman of this year’s event remarked, “It was a great day ofgolf by some very amazing young, talented golfers. The day was truly rewardingand all the golfers should be proud of the golf they played and the funds they raisedfor our Rotary Scholarship Program. Our goal is to see this event grow by attractingmore and more youth golfers in an attempt to make this a premier golf tournamentin the area”.

Dreams are just dreams until someone turns them into reality.Rotarian Vera Cassinelli’s dream became reality when she teamedup with Olga Zabolotina, RN from Boston and presented a globalopportunity to the Milford Rotary Club. Cassinelli asked Milford totake the lead to work with Boston doctors and Shriners to establisha burn clinic in Western Ukraine using matching grants from RotaryDistrict 7910 and the Rotary International Foundation. Cassinellinoted that the Lviv-Ratusha Rotary Club in the Western Ukrainewould put up the first $1000 and would oversee the project. MilfordRotary quickly agreed to spearhead the effort and the dream was inaction.

Over many months Cassinelli and others pursued their dream andconvinced the Rotary Clubs of Franklin, Framingham, Southboro,and Hudson to partner with Milford and the Lviv-Ratusha RotaryClub.

Cassinelli, with help from PDG Ralph Hammond, filed a Grantapplication to have funds committed by these clubs, matched by thelocal Rotary District 7910 and then later doubled again by the RotaryInternational Foundation.

A key partner in the matching process was the significant amountof money donated to the project by the Ukrainian National Women’sLeague of America based in New York under the presidency ofMarianna Zajac.

When all was said and done, Rotary’s efforts raised $36, 559 topurchase a surgical microscope, pumps for intravenous infusions, a

syringe pump and three vital signs monitors, as well as other relat-ed burn equipment for the overused and under-equipped Burn Unit#8. Cassinelli’s dreams and efforts resulted in the largestFoundation Grant every funded by the District and RI for the MilfordClub.

Every year about 2500 Ukrainians get burns of varying degreesand some 1400 of them are treated at Burn Center #8 where thenew equipment was installed last year. Included in that number are600 children of which 70% are treated at Burn Center #8. Becauseof the efforts and dreams of a few and the response from many, 11doctors working at the Burn Center will be able to provide better andmore appropriate care followed by intensive therapy to alleviate orreduce patient suffering.Thanks to the efforts of Rotarians here and in the Western Ukraine,

as well as advice and medical expertise provided to Rotarians bynon-Rotarian MD Gennadily Fuzaylov from Massachusetts GeneralHospital, lives will be saved every day. Dr. Fuzaylov is also on thestaff at Harvard Medical School.

Lviv-Ratusha Rotary Club President Andriy Beyzyk, PHD, EllaTymchak MD and MD Natalya Berezuk were responsible for the pur-chase of the new equipment, management of the project in theWestern Ukraine, and the installation of a memorial plaque in thefront entrance of the Burn Unit thanking the Rotary Clubs for theirefforts and concerns.

Meetings are held every Tuesday at 12:10 p.m. at Restaurant 45 in Medway. Rotary was founded in 1905 by a Chicago businessman by thename of Paul Harris. In 1916 the president of Rotary International challenged Rotarians to create an endowment fund for the purpose of doinggood in the world in charitable, educational and other avenues of community service. The fund became known as “The Rotary Foundation.”Following the death of Paul Harris in 1945, the Foundation was renamed the Paul Harris Foundation.

Individuals who contribute $1000 or more are recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. Individuals contributing toward that goal are recognizedas Sustaining Members.
