PPRESIDENTRESIDENT’’SS MMESSAGEESSAGEWow! The car hauler just left the house with the old #9inside. PORTIA is on her way to California and a newowner. To say I'm conflicted is putting it mildly; 15years of bonding, all those encoun-ters with innards that occasionallymisbehaved, and getting reallygood at 'momentum' are on the wayto Sherman Oaks. Balance that withthe new #9 in the garage that bringsthe same good looks, creature com-forts like electric windows andheat, and MORE POWER and I'mreally excited. So, probably, will bethe instructors I take out with methe first few times as I try to bal-ance the best of momentum withmore power than I'm used to. Anytakers?

Personal considerations aside, thereare several items to note thismonth; changes in this year's sched-ule, progress toward building 'Eastof Eden' (I really hope we can callit that), and RMR's 50thAnniversary as a Region of PCA.

The schedule has firmed up and you will always findthe latest posted on the website. I know I have had touse the whiteout in my calendar when we couldn't get avenue or something was added/switched. Thanks toeveryone who has helped find venues and event chairpeople; we have a full and fun season planned.

The question "what's happening with the new track?"will be answered at the April membership meeting.

Walt Fricke will do a presentation to bring all of us upto date.

Next year will be RMR's 50th Anniversary. This seemsto call for a party or celebration of some note. We'resoliciting suggestions for what we should do to recog-nize this milestone. I'm thinking that doing somethingin the theme every month would be appropriate. Pleasee-mail suggestions to us at [email protected] don't forget to volunteer while you're at it.

Four months into my role asNewsletter Editor I’m starting tosee a pretty big variance in contentfrom month to month. Clearlysome months are busier than othersin our club and it has been a chal-lenge at times to find a page for allthe great stuff people send me. Onthe other hand, this month’s sub-missions were lighter than usual. And I’ve come to the realizationthat I can’t create the content for the

newsletter...I can only publish whatI am sent. But necessity is themother of invention as they say, andwe’ve come up with a new articleor two for your reading pleasurethis month.

Joyce Witte sent in a nice articleand picture of her car. How did sheget “published” in the RMRNewsletter? She asked! It’s prettymuch that easy. This is your club

and the newsletter should reflectwhat you are doing and experienc-ing as a club member. So brush upon your writing skills, and getinvolved. Send me your favoritepictures along with your story andI’ll find a place for it in yournewsletter.

See you soon,Martin Smith

The Beginning of an Affair

When I tell another woman that I bought a Porsche, hereyes open wide and her jaw drops in amazement. Aman has a different reaction - his mouth stretches into athin line with the ends curled up and he squints hiseyes as if to turn on his x-ray vision. A look that says, what else is she hiding in there?

My interest in driving Porsches intensified just beforemy debut at Pueblo last year. I was introduced to a sea-soned driving instructor, who happened to be a woman,at a work related gala event. Decked out in floor lengthgowns and chatting over glasses of champagne, shesensed my apprehension about driving on the track forthe first time. Right there in the midst of tuxedos andother polite conversation, she grabbed my arm, leanedin and with a direct gaze said "driving on the track islike an orgasm that doesn't end." Well, that put theimpending weekend in a whole new perspective.Maybe it would be fun after all.

In spite of a crash dream the night before, (I swerved toavoid a gyrating car in front of me only to be jolted bythe car behind me,) the weekend at Pueblo did go well. Thanks to David Rossiter and his enthusiastic coach-ing, I made the best of my three runs with no mishapsbefore the cord showing on the side wall ended myinauguration day.

After taking the requisite first three laps in the passen-ger seat, David eased me in slowly working on line, braking and acceleration, all in third gear. He astutelymonitored how I guided the car, using the full width ofthe track and responding to his directions. We got onwell and the first 20 minutes flew by.

On our second trial, he ramped up my speed with afluid numbering system: I would accelerate accordingto his 6, 7, 9 count, and break before the turns 6, 4, 3."Ten, ten, ten!" while pounding on the dashboardmeant accelerator full down to the firewall. The second

trial went by even faster. This was fun!

On our last session, I finally mastered turn seven, ahairpin curve, gaining enough speed to push up behindother drivers before the short straight away, only one oftwo passing zones. Where is that left arm out the openwindow signaling me to go around? Don't they see meback here? Finally came the wave, and then anotherone. I was passing other drivers - I was not the slowestdriver on the track! It was positively exhilarating.

David said less and less as the laps continued. Brake, hit the mark, turn hit the mark, accelerate… each timearound lifting less or braking a fraction of a secondlater to pick up speed as I became more familiar withthe course. My heart was pounding. Even though I wassharply focused on multiple sensory inputs, a liquidzone seemed to encircle me and the car. It wasn't justthe speed that started to blur the edges of my experi-ence; I was melting into the total sensation.

Suddenly, I caught sight of the checkered flag. "No, itcan't be over already!" I blurted out, but David con-firmed that our last run session had come to an end.The corner workers waved goodbye on the cool downlap, but a smile crossed my face anyway as I thoughtshe was right.

In years past, the Rocky Mountain Region was awashin tracks and the dates to visit and DE the heck out ofthem. Now the faithful must be more creative in find-ing venues to keep their heel-toe action from seizingup with rust. The driving season will have opened bythe time you read this. The traditional spring autocrossat the end of March will have gotten the juices flowing.A trip to La Junta for Driver's Ed will follow on May19th and 20th. But for those with a desire to learn anew track early in the season, a DE will be held at thenew Motorsports Park Hastings in Nebraska on May5th and 6th. This event will be hosted by the GreatPlains Region. Info can be found at http://gpl.pca.org/.The great thing about belonging to the Porsche Club isthat you can participate in any driving event, anywherein the country.

The remainder of the schedule looks like this:

June 9/10 Pueblo DEJuly 7 Ladies Day (atop the mesa aboveGolden)July 14/15 Autocross - World ArenaJuly 28/29 La Junta DEAugust 4/5 Pueblo DEAugust 25/26 Autocross - World ArenaSept 14/15/16 Super DE at our Club Race in PuebloOctober 28 Trick or Cross

Not bad considering the lack of variety. The goodnews is that you will get very adept at driving both LaJunta and Pueblo with 6 and 7 driving days availablerespectively. By the time the 2008 season rolls around,

we likely will have our new track if all goes asplanned.

If these dates don't work out or you simply have adesire to drive another new track, there will be a latesummer Driver's Ed as part of the Club Race onSeptember 29th and 30th at Miller Motorsports Park inUtah. Info available at http://int.pca.org/.

Planning for our September Club Race is in full swing. Please consider volunteering for our signature event ofthe season. If you've never been to a club race, helpingout by working corners is a great way to enjoy theaction. Additionally, many smaller tasks are availablein the months and weeks leading up to the event.Contact me or Kathy Fricke if you have a bit of time tooffer.

One of the great supporters of our race over the past 15years is the owner of Road Racing Services, GeorgeIbbotson. It all started with one used Forest Green1972 911E Targa owned by his brother Bob. In 1974Bob, Hal Shaw, and Fred Veitch, PCA members all, were running track days at Woody Creek nearSnowmass and attending autocrosses held at Lowry AirForce base. They started a small tire business, callingit Alpina Racing offering tires and parts to PCA racersand others while reducing their own racing cost bybuying in volume.

Over the years, Bob and company raced Porsches andSports 2000 racers while serving the tire needs of rac-ers at each event. George came into the picture in

1989 and grew the business to serve not just road rac-ers but the likes of NHRA, NASCAR, SCCA, World ofOutlaws and others. We are very proud to have a loyalsupporter like George at our Club Race. When you seehim at the track, ask him about the "old days" and get astory or two along with your race tires.

Other tidbits to report on an otherwise "slow" newsmonth:

*Congratulations to Evergreen's Nick Ham for his out-right GT class win in the Rolex Series AutodromoHermanos Rodriguez event held March 3rd in MexicoCity. His Mazdaspeed RX-8 prevailed with a pair ofFarnbacher/Loles GT3 Porsches taking 2nd and 4thseparated by another RX-8 in 3rd.

*Kudos to Rick Goncalves who is finally going toattempt to dig his G-class 911 out of the nearly 8 feetof snow blocking access to it's storage spot in hisEvergreen garage. Good thing Nick Ham didn't rentstorage from Rick!

*Watch your mirrors at the next DE that you attend. Our President, Susan Bucknam has acquired a new-to-her ‘87 Carrera and will be looking for a courteouspoint-by.

*Club racers beware - Alex Acevedos will be debutinghis F-class 911 at the NASA event in Pueblo on St.

Patricks Day weekend. By the time he gets to his firstPCA race at Heartland Park Topeka, he will be wellseasoned since myself, and racers Bill Petty, DaveSpeights, and Jesse Wurmbrand will be there to "assist"in his proper on-track orientation.

*Next to join the madness will be Barry Tiller (hus-band of Adele Arakawa) also running in F. Somethingabout a 1980ish 911 that says it all. Look for him atHastings in June if not sooner. The club racing bug iscontagious within families. By my count, that wouldmake at least 6 husband-wife race teams in our Region- the others being Bob and Deb Polich, Walt and KathyFricke, Mike and Francis Norris, Bob and Pat Dent, and Paul and Kim Gutowski - plus I've probably leftsome out - sorry!

Well now that I've turned this article into even more ofa gossip column than at least I normally perceive it tobe…..I'll leave you to go uncover the car, flush thebrake fluid, check the wheel bearings, and get outthere, the driving season is here at last!

New Rules for Restraints from PCA - 2008New Rules for Restraints from PCA - 2008

Harness Systems:

Beginning in 2008, if the partici-pant chooses to install a 5/6 pointdriving harness (four point systemsare not safe and therefore notallowed) several changes to theautomobile must be made to create asafe occupant restraint system.Harnesses must include an antisub-marine strap and be mounted in anapproved manner consistent with themanufacturer's instructions. TheHarness system must be used inconjunction with a seat which hasthe supplied routing holes for the

shoulder and anti-submarine belts. All pieces of the restraint systemmust be installed in accordance withthe manufacturer's instructions.

This means that a seat is required tohave the proper routing holes for theharness as supplied by the seat man-ufacturer for the shoulder, lap andanti-submarine straps. The shoulderstraps should be mounted at 90degrees to the axis of your spine orat most 40 degrees down from hori-zontal. Because the addition of theharness system means that the occu-pants are fastened upright in the

vehicle, a properly padded roll baror roll cage is strongly encouragedto complete the SYSTEM. The useof one without the other may resultin an unsafe environment and is nota COMPLETE SYSTEM. Due toUV degradation and wear the har-ness webbing must be replacedevery five years.
