COMMODORE’ S CORNER Has the summer that wouldn’t end, finally ended? Appears

that way, but the yachting season goes on forever. No, I’m

not talking about the unending monthly yachting invoices for

boat loans, moorage, insurance, etc. I’m talking about off-

season cruising and our monthly yacht club membership

meetings. Both are fun and shouldn’t be missed. I’d be

tempted to try to schedule an off-season yacht club cruise, but

the unpredictability of the weather makes scheduling sketchy.

My advice is, keep your boat ready to take advantage of a

weather window for a quick off-season cruise, even if it’s just

an overnight to Friday Harbor for dinner and a movie. If the

weather window looks goof for a couple of days, try Victoria.

You’ll likely be able to tie up right in front of the Empress

Hotel and enjoy the city without the tourist crowds.

Our next membership meeting is October 16th with a presen-

tation by Doug and Lisa Cram describing their adventures

rebuilding a classic wooden boat. Other calendar notes are

the November 20th membership meeting and the December

18th Commodore’s Holiday Party...mark it down.

Our last official yacht club cruise to Cap Sante Boat Haven in

Anacortes was a howling success thanks to Rear Commo-

dore Doug Cram. We had 23 attendees and 10 boats to en-

joy the better than expected weather. Highlights included an

excellent Happy Hour at Anthony’s with bargain cocktails

and appetizers, bikes, bikers, dancing and rock ’n’ roll at the

Oyster Run beer garden, BBQ potluck, spiked coffee, pastry

and fruit in the morning, oh, and howling wind on Sunday

morning. A few brave souls headed home but many of us

stayed another night...partly because we were having so much

fun.

In the sailing world, Oracle Team USA capped off a shocking

comeback to win the 2013 America’s Cup. Oracle had once

trailed 8-1 before going on an eight race winning streak to

edge Emirates Team New Zealand for the win. Everyone

seems to agree is was the greatest comeback in the 163 year

history of the America’s Cup. Some say it’s the greatest

comeback in any sport! Continued on page 3

COMMODORE’S CORNER, continued

Another great sailing feat was the successful conclusion of the first leg of Russ and Jonelle Johnson’s sailboat Snap-

dragon. Russ and his crew, Joe Golberg, Rob McNeil and Steve Rubey completed their voyage from Fisherman Bay to

San Diego just in time to watch the America’s Cup final race televised at the San Diego Yacht Club. Now that’s what I

call good planning. Congratulations, guys!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ETHANOL AND BOAT INSURANCE BEFORE

PUTTING YOUR BOAT UP FOR THE WINTER

Keep ethanol at bay: Today it’s highly likely that your boat’s gasoline contains a mixture of up to 10% etha-

nol, which is known to damage engines and boat fuel systems, especially over the long winter storage sea-

son. If you have a portable gas tank on your boat, try to use as much gas as possible before you put the boat

away at the end of the season. Any remaining gas or gas-and-oil-mix that’s left in the tank can be put in your

car or outdoor power equipment. Use it as quickly as possible.

If your boat has a built-in gas tank that cannot be emptied, add a fuel stabilizer, and then fill the tank as

much as possible, leaving just a smidgen of room for expansion. This will greatly reduce the amount of mois-

ture-laden air that can enter the tank’s vent. The goal is to prevent water from being absorbed into the gas

resulting in phase separation and damage.

Look for “ice and freeze coverage” in your boat’s insurance policy: Many boaters think they don’t have to

worry about freeze damage if they live in temperate regions. But every year, there are multiple freeze dam-

age claims for boats hit by a hard freeze or where a storm took out electrical power to the boat or heated

storage. So the first rule of winter storage is to winterize properly.

Small winterizing mistakes like not draining all areas of the raw water system can easily destroy an engine.

For that reason it’s a good idea to have ice and freeze coverage just in case something got overlooked when

the boat was winterized. Check your policy. The coverage may be offered as a policy “rider”. It’s relatively

inexpensive and can go a long way toward protecting you from a catastrophic engine loss. In warmer states,

this feature is often added to your policy automatically.

However, don't delay. Check your policy now. In some states, particularly in the north, there is a deadline to

purchase the coverage as many insurers don’t offer the coverage once temperatures get cold, usually around

the end of October. For more information or help reading your policy, check with your agent or insurer.

For additional tips on winterizing your boat, go to boatus.com and enter “winterizing” in the search box near

the top of the screen. You can print off a winterizing checklist to be sure you’ve covered all the bases.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS ! Rob Thesman and Marci Flanery and Mike and Linda McReynolds have
