Wendy is launching Closets for Charity at the Fourth Annual Y94FM Glamour Gala presented by Natur-Tyme. All proceeds will go to the Jim & Juli Boeheim Foundation, an organization with several programs geared toward enriching the lives of Central New York children in need and providing support for eliminating cancer through research and advocacy.

October is National Fair-Trade Month. It is a time to celebrate individuals and corporations working to ensure that producers in poor countries receive a greater percentage of the price paid by consumers. Fair-trade operators must adhere to basic human and labor rights —including the right to organize, no child labor, and access to health care.

When you purchase products that are certifi ed fair-trade, you can rest assured that good wages are paid to the producers and that the producers are acquiring knowledge and learning skills that will improve their lives. Additionally, fair-trade products are grown using ecologically-sustainable methods. Often, a percentage of profi ts earned on fair-trade products go back into the community. Think of it this way: when you buy fair-trade, you are helping to sustain an entire community in a developing country and you are also helping to sustain the earth! That’s pretty awesome!

Shea butter is made in West Africa. Many shea butter manufacturers are not fair-trade and the women who work for these manufacturers do not even earn a dollar for over 30 hours of work each week; this does not even begin to reach living wage standards. Alaffi a shea butter products are certifi ed Fair for Life: Social and Fair Trade by IMO—The Institute for Marketeology, one of the fi rst and most renowned international inspection and certifi cation agencies for organic and social fair-trade accountability.

Koffi carves these chairs using traditional hand-carving tools, such as axes, chisels, and knives. Each chair is carved from a single piece of wood. Koffi salvages stumps that are discarded by commercial loggers for his sculptures and furniture.

Your Beautiful Pet: Thoughts on GroomingBy Sam Kingsley

Chili for the Meat Lover or Chili for the VeganBy Shannon Morehouse MA, CHHC

Simply swap out ground turkey for textured vegetable protein and this recipe can be vegan-friendly!Ingredients:

• 2 cups uncooked beans (kidney or black beans or mixed)• 5 cups water• 3 cups vegetable broth• 1 pound ground turkey OR [1 cup uncooked TVP (textured vegetable

protein) and 1 cup hot vegetable broth] • 2 bay leaves• 1/4 cup olive oil• 2 onions, diced• 4 cloves garlic, minced• 1 green or red chili pepper, minced• 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper• 2 tsp coriander• 2 tsp cumin• 1 tbsp chili powder• 1 28-ounce can diced or crushed tomatoes• 3/4 cup of your favorite salsa• 1 can of tomato paste• 2 cups leftover cooked rice• salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

In a large soup or stock pot, soak beans in plenty of water for at least 6 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse.

Bring beans, 5 cups of water, and 3 cups of broth to a slow simmer. Add bay leaves. Allow to cook for 90 minutes to two hours.

Turkey Option: In a separate large soup or stock pan, sauté onions, garlic and chili pepper in olive oil for three to five minutes, until onions are soft. Reduce heat and add turkey, cayenne, coriander, chili powder, and cumin and stir well to combine and cook until the turkey is no longer pink.

TVP Option: In a small bowl, combine TVP with hot vegetable broth and allow to sit for five to ten minutes. In a separate large soup or stock pan, sauté onions, garlic, and chili pepper in olive oil for three to five minutes, until onions are soft. Reduce heat and add TVP with broth, cayenne, coriander, chili powder, and cumin and stir well to combine.

Add pot of cooked beans/water/broth, rice, tomatoes, salsa, tomato paste, and salt and pepper to taste to either your turkey concoction or your TVP concoction. Bring to a slow simmer and stir well to combine. Allow to cook for an hour. Serve with cornbread.

Grooming your animal companion is very

important. Brushing daily with a ‘slicker’ helps

remove loose fur, prevents mats, and prevents

debris from working its way down through the

coat, where it can become embedded in the

skin, leading to infections. Grooming also helps

us to bond with them.

Start bathing animals young and make it a

fun experience. This will train your dogs and

cats to love bath time. Making a consistent

bath schedule and staying calm are important

tips to keeping your stress level and theirs at

a minimum. Do not shampoo regularly. Too

much washing damages the acid mantle of the

animal’s skin, leading to skin issues. Washing

should be done once every one to two

months, as needed. Organix South’s Pet

Shampoo is my preferred brand.

Between baths, you can use a rinse or

grooming spray to freshen up the coat and

keep fleas away. Aubrey’s Grooming Spray

is a great spray option. A simple rinse, such as

watered-down chamomile tea, can be used

every two to three days as desired. If using

more complex formulas, consult the packaging

for proper usage.

Inspect your animal’s ears every one to two

weeks, and clean them once a month as

needed. Ark Naturals’ ‘Ears All Right’

Cleaning Lotion is an easy-to-use formula.

For basic cleaning, warm almond oil to body

temperature and use a cotton swab to clean

the outer portions of the ear canal. Be careful

not to push any debris back into the ear canal.

Hi, I’m Jordan Rubin. Fifteen years ago, I was diagnosed with

multiple incurable illnesses including

Crohn’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis,
