One of the most iconic labels in jazz history guests the Montmartre for an entire evening - to play us some of their latest records and to speak about their artists - with the help from one of Denmark’s most respected DJs. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the jazz world from a different perspective. CLOSED FOR FALL VACATION (EFTERÅRSFERIE) AUSTRALIA’S FASTEST RISING JAZZ STAR PIANIST TOM VINCENT & HIS TRIO Tom Vincent (piano / AUS), Bart Tarenskeen (bass / NL-AUS), Marc Meader (drums / AUS) He is from the same city as our Crown Princess Mary - Hobart, Tasmania – and he is one the of most exciting jazz musicians to ever emerge out of Australia and we are very excited to present him here at the Montmartre for his first time in Denmark. The Tom Vincent Trio received great praise from Branford Marsalis who performed with them at the Sydney Opera House. They are a trio with real historical jazz leanings, a readiness to play loose and improvise readily, and a great feel for an easy swing. Tom leads whole gigs with no charts and no set list, moving freely through medleys of standards and playing outrageously with the tunes, arbitrarily syncopating and re-harmonizing as the muse takes him. Hearing Tom and his courageous trio is a rare experience of reckless immediacy. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear an incredible jazz group from ”Down Under”. Bjarke Falgren (midi-violin, viola & co-leader / DK), John Sund (6 & 12 string guitar & co-leader / DK), Morten Lundsby (bass / DK), Ole Theill (tabla / DK) There is magic in the air whenever the young and dynamic Danish violinist Bjarke Falgren plays. He has great respect for the instrument’s history but simultaneously plays with youthful vigor, urgency and presence. He is involved in many different projects and tonight he guests us with a group that he co-leads with John Sund, “World On A String”, which combines European music culture with jazz, Irish, Indian and Balkan folklore - ranging from very soft and lyrical vocabulary to powerful and intense expression, combined with sparkling rhythmic drive. All of the group’s members have for a long time been a part of the Danish jazz scene and some of the members have also toured worldwide. They have worked both live and in the studio with such different artists as: Van Morrison, The Danish Radio Big Band, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Creme Fraiche, Palle Mikkelborg, Virgo and Salem. Singled out for outstanding performances world- wide with the groundbreaking electronica Tango group Gotan Project, Line has also forged an exceptional path all on her own. She graduated from the Royal Danish Conservatory in Copen- hagen. With a taste for the unusual and a childhood penchant for jazz, she quickly integrated the Paris Latino community. Though her compositions bring together a variety of elements from jazz, tango and Cuban music, her works maintain their unique compositional character. You hear that unstilted creativity in Line’s music, and perhaps that is what makes it so original, inspiring and different. She is very clear about how her music will sound, and encourages her musicians to contribute to its evolution by adding their own touch, cultural and musical perspective. CELEBRATING SVEND ASMUSSEN LINE KRUSE – THE DANISH VIOLINIST FROM GOTAN PROJECT Oct 14 20.00 (8pm) DKK 350 THURSDAY Oct 17-24 CLOSED VACATION Dick Oatts (tenor saxophone / USA), Søren Møller (piano / DK) Music can change lives. So it happened for Danish pianist Søren Møller when, inspired by listening to the album People Time by Stan Getz and Kenny Bar- ron, he decided to become a jazz pianist. A work of melancholia and mastery, the live recording became Getz’ last visit to Jazzhus Montmartre before he died in 1991. A decade later Møller sought out Kenny Barron at Manhattan School of Music in New York and studied with him towards his Master Degree. Here, Møller also met saxophone legend Dick Oatts and together they deve- loped a melodic duo expression on the critically acclaimed album «Storytel- ling» from 2005 and again on the 2008 release «The Clouds Above» that has received rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. This October Oatts and Møller will revisit the album that started it all - the Stan Getz/Kenny Barron album «People Time» - and perform standards for the first time as a duo. As a soloist, he regularly tours as jazz violinist with the acclaimed bassist Stanley Clarke and his touring band. Since 2007 Mads has lead his own quartet. He grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark and moved to the U.S. at the age of 20 to pursue jazz studies, where he graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2003. Since, he has performed with Paquito D’Rivera, Kenny Barron, Joe Lovano, Sergio & Odair Assad, Leo Kottke and Stanley Clarke, among others. Besides his activities as a performer, he’s an accomplished com- poser and has been a thriving force in the educational aspects of jazz and improvisation. Tonight, the house trio is headed by none less than the prolific Danish pianist Nikolaj Bentzon, whom we gladly welcome for his first appearance here at the Montmartre. To complete our Culture Night 2010 house trio will be the same rhythm section team as on our Copenhagen Jazz Festival after hour jams, i.e. our young protégé house drummer, the incredible Niclas Bardeleben, and the even younger and not less talented bassist Jonathan Bremer. Truly an integral part of jazz history, ”The Fiddling Viking” was born in Copenhagen in 1916, took up the violin at the age of 7 and as a young adult began to play on cruise ships with Josephine Baker and Fats Waller. In the 50’s he formed the famous trio Swe-Danes with Alice Babs and Ulrik Neu- mann, which became immensely popular for their Music Hall entertainment and they went on touring the US. Svend played with everybody in jazz from all around the World since the 30’s: Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Stephane Grappelli, etc. He’s an international treasure and living legend, who also played at the Montmartre during the club’s first era. Bollani recalls that he felt an immediate musical connection with the Danes. “We had such a great time and enjoyed playing together so much that we wanted to continue, as a trio, which we did the following year.
