Once again Advent is here and I’m excited. A miracle happened here. It had lived in the heart of God always. God waited for the perfect time for the Christ to walk among us in human form. God waited and waited, and that perfect time arrived. Judging by what we have seen, the time was perfect, and the teacher, our teacher, was perfect. We began learning more and more what God is like. Our eyes were opened to what matters to God. It was surprising, just as it had been planned from the beginning. God chose that the Christ would live simply, have no possessions, would love outrageously and without regard. He would live in intimate relationship to Father and Holy Spirit, with long seasons of prayer punctuated by ardent servanthood on behalf of all conditions of men and women. He would champion the case of the poor, the bereaved, the conflicted, the friendless, the children. His heart was wide open. He would teach simply, with little stories that would be easily grasped. Obviously, we were to learn that God loves us very much, goes to the mat

for us, is never far away, and, as we say in the Celtic Eucharist, “Inhales the breath of our prayers” and “sets a table for our satisfaction.” We learned so much from this incarnation. And the magical thing, the energetic, is that this is exactly what God wants us to know. This is how God really is. Incarnation is an invitation to the dance. It is God saying, “I love you this much.” There is music. There are angels. There are

Vestry View “Is it Thanksgiving or Christmas?” by Terry Smith

Is it Thanksgiving or

Christmas? I’m writing this

on a reflective Sunday

afternoon just before

Thanksgiving. You are

reading this during Advent

on the journey to the

manger. I have thanks to

share that remind me of the great treasure the

manager held.

First, a final word on Lobsterfest. What? Is he

serious? Roll with me a bit. Your efforts, be they

buying a ticket, selling a ticket, promoting in the

media, keeping the books, answering the phones,

sharing a post on social media, working outside,

working inside, or working the kitchen helped us

earn $13 ,014, the highest net profit we’ve had.

Even though it was a record year for dine in,

Meg’s efforts in organizing the kitchen led to

reduced expenses. If you were part of Lobsterfest

in any way, you contributed to our success and

gave a great gift to our church. Thank you.

This time of thanks reminds me of Father Everett’s sermon on October 22. In referencing the Lobsterfest and the material handlers in the back of the refrigerated truck he asked if the truck itself was a holy place. Was it sacred? That has stuck with me in such a powerful way. I experienced holiness in every aspect of the Lobsterfest, and I see our work together as sacred. I’ve pondered that thought for some time. I stand by it. The ministry of St Francis by the Sea has been sacred to Robin and me since we set foot inside about six years ago.

As we journey towards the manger, I think back to Father Everett’s message of Christmas Day 2016. We were traveling that day, but we listened to the podcast Linda posted. He spoke of Mary pondering the treasure of the manger. He reminded us that, although we remember Mary’s actions in the past, we must not miss the present. Each Sunday, I’m privileged to observe many modern-day treasures from my vantage point in the choir. Today I saw sacred treasures in the prayerful consideration of Marilyn Smetana during morning prayer, in the glowing eyes of the Shelton’s grandchildren Liam and Bowen,

and in the warm welcome of each person greeted during The Peace.

We, the church, are a treasure to so many and a direct reflection of the gift of the manager.

Peace to you as we continue to seek the sacred spaces together. Terry Smith

January 14, 2018

January 14 will be the first of our quarterly "Ask a Friend to Church" Sundays. St. Francis does a marvelous job at community outreach in serving others. The Vestry would like to see us increase our outreach in sharing the love of God and the St. Francis way of worship and fellowship through our Sunday and Wednes-day services. Did you know that 80% of peo-ple, if asked, will come to church? Between now and January 14 be purposeful and inten-tional about mentioning to friends and ac-quaintances what we have here at St. Francis and what it means to you. Ask someone to come with you on January 14! Of course, you can ask someone ANY time.

Peace and Good- Beth Beswick

Save the Date! by Beth Beswick

Our Annual Meeting is set for January 7, 2018. Please plan on staying after the 10:00 service. One of the things that will happen during the meeting is that the congre-gation will be given the opportunity to have input into our church leadership as we vote for the three new members who will join the vestry. Although all five of these candidates are well known faces around St. Francis, please read through the statements they have provided to read about the many gifts each would bring to the table. We appreciate their willingness to serve, and we encourage you to participate in this important function in our church life. Candidate statements are listed in alphabetical order, pages 6-10.

Saturday and Sunday, December 2 and 3 at 4pm,

the Carolina East Singers perform a Christmas

concert at First Presbyterian Church in

Morehead City. CES is a community choir led by

former West Carteret High School choir director,

Susan Gillis Bailey, and Sunnie Gayle Ballou,

Music Director at FPC. We include mention of it

here because St. Francis by the Sea choristers,

Meg Bradford, Scott and Libba Shelton, Terry

Smith and Craig Griffin sing (with solos by Robin

Smith and me) in this concert of traditional and

popular Christmas music for large choirs. A little

something for everyone, the concert includes

Pergolesi’s MAGNIFICAT. Tickets $10.

Questions or tickets? Please see any of the

singers listed above. Come and support your

community choir.

Wednesday, December 13 at 5:30pm, church

family members of all ages are invited to gather

in the gallery/fellowship hall to stuff stockings

for Angel Tree gift recipients, Robin Smith’s

students at The Bridges Alternative School; at

6:00pm we will share a simple potluck family

supper; from 6:30-7:30pm we will sing carols in

the sanctuary led by our friend, pianist Brenda

Bruce. Brenda’s program is her gift to the family

of St. Francis by the Sea in return for our warm

welcome to her at her concert of Familiar

Favorites in July. Brenda’s Christmas program

includes all the popular and familiar secular

Christmas songs, kids’ songs, well-known

Christmas carols, and more

Saturday, December 16 at 11:45am, join with members of the St. Francis choir and sing Christmas Carols at the annual Christmas Cheer Luncheon event at First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City, an annual community-wide ministry to local families in need. Wearing our cheerful Christmas sweaters and sweatshirts, we gather in the fellowship hall at FPC at 11:45, don our headgear (reindeer antlers, Santa hats and bells) and sing the first verse of all the Christmas

carols we know while lunch guests are seated and served lunch. Then we are served lunch as a group and stay (if you are able) to help with clean-up. There is no rehearsal for this -- everyone can sing a Christmas carol! – please join us for fun, fellowship and to spread some cheer to those in need. The more the merrier and the quicker the clean-up (done usually by 2pm). Questions? See Libba Shelton or any member of the choir. Sunday, December 17 at 5:00pm, the choir of St. Francis by the Sea with Father Everett, 15 readers, and the children and youth will present “Come to the Manger” a service of lessons (readings), carols and anthems for choir and congregation. This 35-minute service (no sermon; no Eucharist) will be followed by cookies and cider in the gallery/fellowship hall hosted by the choir and the youth. A tremendous “thank you” to Nina Hobbs for providing the “Come to the Manger” service materials and sheet music for the choir. Questions? See Beth Beswick or me.

Tuesday, December 26, 5:00pm – 8:30pm. The Fourth annual Handel’s MESSIAH Sing-Along at St. Francis by the Sea. We offer this event to all singers and spectators throughout the region so all may participate in a live performance of the great masterwork.

Register early for a discounted fee of $16 (before Friday, December 22); otherwise $20 at the door. Registration forms are available in the church office or from any choir member or on the church website. Doors open at 4pm; seating begins at 4:45pm; the music begins at 5:00pm. Full details about the event are available on the church website at www.stfrancisbythesea.org. Questions? See any choir member or Linda Laughton.

Please mark your calendars to attend and

participate in the choir’s Taize Service of Light

and Silence for Epiphany, Friday, January 5th at

6:00pm. This candle-lit, lay-led evening prayer

service is one of the most beautiful services of the

year. There is no sermon and no communion,

just simple Taize chants led by the choir and

sung by all, prayers of the people and moments

of silent prayer.

Finally, be watching your email for an announcement and an invitation to join the choir for impromptu Christmas caroling (TBD) to homebound families on the island. On behalf of the Choir of St. Francis by the Sea, Merry Christmas to all!

Stay tuned! Linda

ST FRANCIS ANGEL TREE On November 18, the St Francis Angel Tree was decorated with beautiful paper angels that identify the students of Bridges School in Morehead City. Each angel shows the child’s initials, grade, sex, and “wish list” items. Addi-tionally, we are collecting stocking stuffers and school supplies for the students. There is a basket and adoption procedures next to the tree. Please wrap gift and attach paper angel. All gifts should be returned no later than Wednesday, December 13 when for the Angel Tree Pot Luck and Christmas carols singing (see below).

ANGEL TREE POT LUCK AND CHRISTMAS CAROLS

Join us as we stuff stockings for our St Francis Angel Tree children, enjoy a simple pot luck dinner, and sing our favorite Christmas carols led by pianist, Brenda Bruce. When Brenda performed at St Francis in July, she was reinvigorated by the welcoming spirit of St Francis and has been moved to gift us with a family-style Christmas carol sing-along that will blend our Angel Tree gift return with a pot-luck dinner followed by the sing-along. The Outreach Committee is collaborating with the choir to make this fun, family event possible.

The evening’s festivities will include: 5:30-6:00 stocking stuffing & pot luck set up 6:00-6:30 pot luck dinner 6:30-7:30 Christmas carols A POT LUCK SIGN UP SHEET IS ON THE ANGEL TREE TABLE IN THE PARISH HALL.

Hope you will come!

I am a cradle Episcopalian born in Boston,

growing up on a small farm in Canton south of

Boston where I attended Trinity Church. I

received my BA in Biology at Clark University

and my MS in Public Health Nutrition at the

University of Tennessee where I was elected

Graduate Student Council President and served

in other University appointments. I am a

Registered Dietitian and still work at Onslow

Memorial Hospital in Cardiac Rehabilitation. I

moved to Raleigh from Knoxville, Tennessee in

1991, and one week later I met my future

husband Phil an NC State Textile Engineer

graduate and became Mom to two teenage boys

and now have a beautiful 7 year old

granddaughter. We built our sound front home

in Emerald Isle in 1994 and moved here

permanently in the year 2000. We came here to

wind surf, but very soon began farming oysters,

and I have helped Phil in his work as volunteer

coordinator for the NC Under Dock Oyster

Culture (UDOC) /Oyster Gardeners of NC. We

are active oyster growers and mentors to new

members. I taught at Carteret Community

College and Craven Community College for

several years prior to going fulltime with Onslow

Memorial Hospital, and Brynn Marr Hospital

and continuing with my own nutrition business.

I have been involved with the several

Episcopal Churches as a choir member,

served as Treasurer and on the Vestry at Tyson

House Student Foundation, Saint

Michaels and All Angels, Knoxville, and

Chairperson of two Refugee Sponsorship

Committees, Church of the Ascension,

Knoxville. Since my “retirement” and finding

Saint Francis by the Sea, I continue to sing

in the choir and have taken up flower duties on

the grounds and in the Saint Clare Chapel and

also serve on the Columbarium Committee.

Some of my other current interests outside of

singing are vegetable gardening, oil painting,

cooking, downhill skiing, genealogy, and DIY

projects in general. What I bring to this vestry

opportunity are my people skills, organizational

programming, and my lifelong association and

commitment to Episcopal Church.

I was raised Catholic. When I met my wife, Marian, I recognized that “her” church, St. Francis By the Sea, provided inclusivity, love and the opportunity to serve God in a much more personal and tangible way. I was received by St. Francis in 1998. Since then I have served in one capacity or another at all times starting with our support and participation in Life Raft 2000. I currently serve on the finance committee and the endowment fund committee. I have served on the outreach committee, the Lobster Fest and I was part of the support team for Marian and the Kids of St. Francis for the five years that she served as youth leader. I served on the vestry from 2012 through 2015, the first two years as junior warden and the last year as senior warden. Those three years were some of the most challenging and rewarding years of my life.

Our two local daughters, Meredith Westbrook and Amy Hahn, along with their husbands, are active at St. Francis as are our grandchildren, Jackson and Tyler Westbrook and Tanner Hahn. This church is unquestionably our spiritual home and its’ members our family.

I believe that it is important for each of us, individually and as a parish, to review and reinvent ourselves constantly. Because of that belief I have served in a multitude of volunteer positions, learning and growing while giving back to our community, my town and our church. I served five years on the board of commissioners for Pine Knoll Shores from 1998 until 2003. I am currently serving again after being elected for a four year term that started in 2016. I have served as president of the Country Club of the Crystal Coast, President of the Beacon’s Reach Master Home Owners Association, President of the Board of directors for the Carteret County domestic violence program, and President of the Carteret County Friends of the Aging. I served on the advisory board of the Leon Mann Enrichment Center. I am a Friend of the Library and have served three years as Race Timer for Kayak for Wounded Warriors. I am a certified volunteer for the Morehead City Middle School and a certified Boy Scout trainer.

I have lived on the island of Bogue Banks for 31 years and I have contacts all over the county who often provide support and information for St. Francis by the Sea. I know our members and where our strengths and weaknesses are. My family is one of the few families at St. Francis with three generations of active members, keeping me always aware of the different perspectives of members of all ages.

I have knowledge and experience that will allow me to support practical progress for our church. I have no personal agenda and will work hard to support our diocese, priest, our staff and the work of our parish. I am honest and willing to discuss my position on any issue, even if it does not agree with yours. I am open-minded and focused but willing to learn and will admit when I am wrong.

I am one of the older members of St. Francis by the Sea both in age and length of time here. I think it is critical for our leadership to include people who represent all the different perspectives of our church. It is important to cultivate new leaders while continuing to utilize the knowledge and experience of “recycled” leaders like myself.

I have the time, the ability and the desire to serve.

My wife Marion and I have lived in Carteret County for 32 years. We have one daughter and are happily expecting our first grandchild in January. We joined St. Francis 9 years ago after a close friend invited us to visit. The welcome we received was overwhelming. Eve-ryone then and still today are as I have heard many visitors say, “so friendly.”

St. Francis is very special and the people have become an extension of our family. We both love the time we are privileged to spend there. I feel anything with that much im-portance in your life should be supported with the traditional time, talent, and treasure.

As many of you know I have served previous-ly on the vestry and would like to offer to do so again. My experience with the physical structure, finances, and love of the parish will hopefully be of help. Thank you all for allow-ing Marion and I to be a part of the St. Fran-cis family.

In 1989 I moved to Emerald Isle from Marion,

North Carolina with my husband and young

children .My husband, Jim, and I met at Ap-

palachian State University, where we each

earned our Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in

Sociology. Jim is a retired Judicial District

Manager for the N.C. Department of Correc-

tions. We have been married thirty nine years,

and have three sons-Seth, Caleb, and Shane.

While living in Marion, I was a Social Worker for the McDowell County Department of Social Services, and later I served as a Licensure Con-sultant for the N.C. Division of Human Re-sources in Black Mountain. Upon moving to Carteret County, I worked as the Qualified In-tellectual Disabilities Professional for Carobell ICF-MR Facilities in Onslow County, and taught Sociology at Coastal Community Col-lege. After our third son was born, I stayed home for some years. I then began my Continued on page 9

position as an instructor for the High School

Equivalency Program at Carteret Communi-

ty College thirteen years ago. Also my hus-

band and I have remained involved with ac-

tivities at Appalachian State, and recently

served five years on the Parents Association

Board of Directors.

I am originally from Durham, N.C. where I

attended Angier Avenue Baptist Church. I

was baptized at the age of ten, and was ac-

tive in the youth program throughout my

childhood and teens. After college, when I

lived in Marion, I was a member of the First

Presbyterian Church, where I sang in the

choir, and worked with the children’s pro-

grams. Upon relocating to Emerald Isle, I

attended Chapel by the Sea in Emerald Isle

for twenty five years, where I was a teacher

in the children’s ministry, choir member,

and small group Bible study leader.

In the spring of 2014 I first visited St. Fran-

cis by the Sea, and have been attending reg-

ularly ever since. It felt like the right place

for me from the beginning. My Confirmation

the following year was especially meaningful

and a milestone in my spiritual life. I have

enjoyed and benefited from being a choir

member, and a part of the Daughters of the

King. I appreciate the warm and welcoming

spirit at St. Francis by the Sea, and have

been inspired by the art shows and concert

series that offer such a variety of cultural op-

portunities to our community. The activities

of the Outreach committee have particularly

impressed me. I would like to be a part of

the vestry in hopes of contributing to the

church that has become such an important

force in my life.

Beth

As the former Parish Administrator for over five years, I have a deep understanding of the church’s operational philosophy and business practices, as well as the parish traditions associ-ated with the liturgical calendar. I know most parishioners on sight and have enjoyed my warm relationships with them. I am a “joiner” and enjoy contributing to parish activities such as lobster fest, Angel Tree, Martha’s Mission and Hope Mission outreach, the prayer shawl group, and the art gallery. I received a BS in Secondary Education/English with minors in French and psychology from Central Connecticut State University. I have a certificate in general management from the Uni-versity of Michigan as well as numerous profes-sional development credentials, including con-flict resolution and negotiating for positive out-comes. Hartford, Connecticut. With a multi-million dollar budget, my project teams and I developed software for CIGNA’s business processes, in-cluding claims, billing, and provider reimburse-ment. I also did a stint in Corporate Communi-cations/Public Relations during the Y2K years, presenting CIGNA’s Y2K plans to clients and state regulators. During this assignment I also developed a web site and newsletter for the divi-sion president. I am proud of my background in community service. I was chair of cub scouts for our town as well as led a den of my own, I coached girls’ Little League soft-ball, I was the Connecticut contact for Afghan Hound Rescue of New England, and business man-ager of a yoga studio where I also taught. I held nu-merous membership or officer positions in other professional, outreach, and social organizations. Currently I volunteer at the Carteret County Hu-mane Society, where I screen and process cat adoptions. Having vacationed in Emerald Isle since 1983, when I retired in 2005 it was a “no brainer” for my husband Rick and me to move to here. We have four children and six grandchildren (all boys!). We enjoy spending time with our grand-children, traveling, wine tastings, painting, fit-ness walking, and binging on Netflix. I’m still working on adapting my love of birdwatching and gardening from New England to the coastal south, but it’s been a struggle. I do the New York Times crossword puzzle every day, solve Sudoku puzzles, play Spider solitaire, and slow-ly but surely work my way through the growing backlog of books on my Kindle, hoping it’s true that this will help keeping my brain juices flow-ing!

I am honored to have this opportunity to pre-sent my background to you, and for the poten-tial of once again contributing to the success of St. Francis by the Sea. Sharon
