Season of the Holy Spirit Twenty-Ninth Sunday of Ordinal Time, October 20, 2013

The Church has alwaysprayed for the sick to befreed from pain and restoredto health. Its pastoral carehas its roots in the healing

ministry of Jesus. The Lordwas always aware of suffer-ing and pain and respondedwith compassion and healing.

The early Church contin-ued Christ’s healing minis-try. In the Epistle of St.James we read:

“Is there anyone who is sickamong you? Let him summonthe priests of the church.

They should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith willsave the sick and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.”

From the beginning, anointing those suffering pain or illness in the Sacrament of Anointingof the Sick became a common practice of the church.

By the Middle Ages, perhaps due to the high mortality rate and the fear of death, the Sacra-ment of the Sick gradually lost its healing communal dimension and became associated with the“last rites” of the church before death. It came to be called “Ext r eme Unct ion” or “Final

Anointing.” As a result, many people who might otherwise have benefited from the Sacramentavoided it or waited until death was imminent before requesting it.

The Second Vatican Council reclaimed the original meaning of the Sacrament of Anointingof the Sick that emphasizes the concern of the Church and the healing power of Christ. It is in-tended not for the end of life but for any time serious illness or need is present.

When faced with your own sickness or that of a loved one it is important to seek out the Sacra-ment of Anointing of the Sick. If you are planning to go into the Hospital for care then it is sug-gested that you call the parish office and ask that a priest anoint you in advance. And even if youwill not be hospitalized and there is the presence of illness, it is good to seek out the Sacrament.

For well over a decade, the Federal Government has had HIPAA laws (Health Insurance Port-ability and Accountability Act),  that require an increase in the privacy of patients and their re-cords. Each Hospital has its own internal hospital policy on interpretation of what the HIPAALaws require of them. Therefore, from hospital to hospital, there are some variations in notify-ing clergy to come and anoint the sick. Because our parishioners receive medical assistance froma variety of hospitals in the area, the notification of clergy varies from hospital to hospital.

We are very proud, here in Winfield, to have one of the top hospitals in the State of Illi-nois just four blocks north of Saint John’s Church, Central DuPage Hospital (ranked at present#8). Yet there is some confusion when filling out various intake forms at Central DuPage Hospi-tal that patients are asked to complete when entering the hospital. Some forms ask the follow-

ing questions: 1) What religion do you belong to? 2) What parish do you belong to? 3) Do youwish your parish to be notified that you are in the hospital?

At the present time Central DuPage does not notify Saint John’s about the informationthat is taken as to church affiliation. Therefore, here at Saint John’s, we do not know if a pa-rishioner is in the hospital unless we receive a phone call from you or your family or if you spe-cifically ask your nurse to call us; the nurse will graciously call us. If you end up in the emer-gency room, please call or have someone call for you.

A PRAYER FOR HEALING

Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to You. Al-low Your healing hand to heal me. Touch my soul with Your

compassion for others; touch my heart with Your courageand infinite Love for all; touch my mind with Your Wisdom, and may my mouth always proclaim Your praise. Teach meto reach out to You in all my needs, and help me to leadothers to You by my example.

Most loving heart of Jesus, bring me health in body andspirit that I may serve You with all my strength. Touch gen-tly this life which You have created, now and forever.

Amen.

Toques

Amen.
