OUR CALL TO HOLINESS
With Thanksgiving approaching and the beginning of the “holiday season”, we come face to face with one of our deepest needs: to come back home. To return to those times and places of our youth, gathering around a table with family and friends; to be nourished, by not only the food set before us, but by lives shared - past and present - at the table of thanksgiving. We may struggle with the drumstick or a person at the other end of the table, but it is a perfect opportunity for us to be nourished, healed, and offer up a thankful heart for all that God has given us. Once you get past the food, football, and annually repeated conversations, remember that a thankful heart is the order of the day. What better place to open your heart then at home, at the dinner table, in the midst of family and friends! Express your thankfulness with words, or an embrace and through prayer. Take the lead around your table to be the voice of “Thanksgiving”. Be kind to one another; be tender-hearted; sing hymns and songs of praise and thanksgiving. Then, you will know that you are home, dwelling with family and living in God. That is what it means to come home!
Happy Thanksgiving!

RESPECT LIFE
Addressing the Italian Society of Hospital Pharmacy on October 14, Pope Francis stated that conscientious objection to abortion and euthanasia is an integral part of fidelity to the medical profession. “On an individual level, the pharmacist uses medicinal substances which can turn into poisons. Here, it is a question of exercising constant vigilance, so that end is always the patient’s life in its entirety.”
“You are always at the service of human life. And this may in some cases involve conscientious objection, which is not infidelity, but, on the contrary, fidelity to your profession, if validly motivated.”
The Pope addressed participants in a congress organized by the Italian Society of Hospital Pharmacy during a meeting in the Vatican’s Clementine Hall.
Today it is fashionable to think that “removing conscientious objection” is a good idea, but this is the ethical intimacy of every health professional, and this should never be negotiated. It is precisely the fundamental responsibility of health professionals.
“And it is also a denunciation of the injustices committed against innocent and defenseless human life. You know that I am very clear about this: abortion is murder, and it is not permissible to become accomplices.” Our duty is closeness, our positive duty: to be close to situations, especially women, so that we do not get to think about the abortion solution, because in reality it is not the solution. Then life after 10, 20, 30 years, passes you the bill. And you must be in a confessional to understand the very hard price of this.”
Pope Francis said that Italy’s national public-health system was important “as an essential element to guarantee the common good and social growth of a country.”
He urged pharmacists not to let the “throwaway culture” affect their work and remain committed to treating the elderly the same way they would care for younger patients.
