RESPECT LIFE MONTH – “BE NOT AFRAID”: Go be my hands and feet to a world enslaved by fear. Go to the woman who is unexpectedly pregnant and fears the future. Go to your friend who fears reprisal at work because he takes a stand for the protection of human life. Go to your aging parent in failing health who fears being a burden. And go to others, too, for their support.

Do something concrete this month: visit an elderly neighbor or shut-in; call a lonely friend; donate to the Crisis Pregnancy Center (http://keimcenters.com/), Hope 4Life ([email protected]) or the Diaper Bank (Cher Leadbeater at [email protected] or 757-472-8934); pray the Rosary at Atria Senior Living with Holy Family members on every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. (for more information, call or email Mo Sinn at 757-769-7083 or [email protected]); join in prayer at Planned Parenthood on Thursdays with other Holy Family members; and pray for a culture of life in this country.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWSCouncil 10804

K of C OPEN HOUSE ~ OCTOBER 19

7:00 ~ Family Room ~ Refreshments

All men of the Parish, their families and their Catholic friends are invited to the Open House to learn more about our Order. Primarily, our Council looks for two types of men (and their families). Those men who would like to get involved with helping others who need help, and those who are already involved in volunteer work with other organizations.

The wide variety of activities available in our Council give the first group the opportunity to pick and choose, based on their time constraints and other obligations. For the second group, who are already involved, our Grand Knight’s (Chuck Kline), philosophy is, “the surest way to get something done is to ask a busy person to do it.”

We are a “one size fits all” organization. If you belong in either of the above groups, try us and you (and your family) will be glad you did.

WEEKLY WISDOM

The Patriarchs – Part I

God Chooses Abraham God Chooses Abraham to become the father of many. This is the beginning of the period of the Patriarchs; The fathers of God’s chosen people, the nation of Israel. The “Abrahamic Covenant” is God’s promise to Abraham:

1) a new land,2) to make Abraham’s name great through many descendants,

and 3) that Abraham would be a blessing to all the families of the

world. This three-part promise provides a framework for the Bible story as it leads to fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

Women’s Faith Sharing and Fellowship Circles are ongoing and meet at various times during the month. For more information, contact Marie Sexton at (757) 718-4147.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:” How vital our oceans are! As the Oceans Director of Greenpeace states, “Our oceans provide 97% of the Earth’s livable habitat and a home to more than 700,000 species, and they generate half of the oxygen we breathe.” The oceans are an unparalleled source of food, electricity, climate control, and resources. Some maintain that they are our largest asset on Earth. Yet, they continue to be choking on plastic, as the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into them every minute, all day, every single day. This plastic pollution entangles turtles, sharks, and sea lions, crippling them and leaving them vulnerable to attack. Other ocean life like the zooplankton and oysters, whales, and seabirds are ingesting plastic waste and suffer slow, painful deaths. Fortunately, Greenpeace is extending efforts over the next 3 years to have global corporations phase out single-use plastics and are engaging retailers, particularly supermarkets and convenience stores, to persuade them to commit to reducing their plastic footprints. As unbelievable as it is, there are places in the U.S. and overseas, where single-use plastic is banned. The same can happen in our area with our backing and our speaking up. (The information in this article is taken from an article written by John Hocevar, the USA Director of Greenpeace.) “With a reminder that the oceans not only contain most of the planet, but also most of the wide variety of living things, we need to serve as responsible stewards not just of our lands and atmosphere, but of our vast blue waters as well.” ~ Pope FrancisEd Marroni (587-4887 – [email protected])
