WILL YOUR WISHES BE KNOWN? A bequest to St. Joseph Parish, Rayne Catholic
Elementary or Notre Dame High School affords a way for you to express specific philanthropic wishes. A bequest may be made by naming a
specific dollar amount, a percentage of the estate or specific assets.
The spirit is given a voice when wishes are expressed in a Will.
While many may think philanthropy is reserved for a select few, the truth is that every bequest makes a mark that will last throughout history. Please pray
for guidance when planning your estate.

most effective and efficient way to meet the needs of the multitudes. Our parish goal for this year is to unite as a parish and have every family and individual participate to the very best of
their ability, in recognition and in thanksgiving for God’s many blessings. All registered parishioners should have received a special letter from Bishop Jarrell requesting a personal commitment and a pledge. If you have already responded in the spirit of stewardship and discipleship, fervent thanks and blessings are yours. If not, please do so, by using a pledge envelope or by giving online @ www.diolaf.org or calling #261-5641.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
“Every unborn child, though unjustly condemned to be aborted, has the face of the Lord, who even before his birth, and then as soon as he was born, experienced the rejection of the world. . . . They must not be thrown away!” Pope Francis
Thanks be to God!
When Jan’s son and his buddies were given two weeks’ notice to move out of their house, Jan
proposed that they throw a cleaning/moving party. She provided the food, drinks, and cleaning supplies. They provided the music and the muscle. The party
was a great success. The house got cleaned, the move was completed in one afternoon, and
everyone went home happy.
Later that week a thank-you card arrived from one of her son’s housemates. “Thanks for the party, Jan. We
couldn’t have done it without you. You’re the greatest. Adam.”
Do we take the time to reflect back on each day or do we just keep moving on? Do we recognize the healing in our lives or focus only on the suffering?
Do we realize that “we couldn’t have done it without” God or do we attribute our successes to
good luck or our own hard work? Do we, like Naaman and the Samaritan leper, make it a habit to express our thanks to God in public praise and in
lives of service?
Hearing and Doing God’s Word
The people on the bottom of the system-any system-are usually much more ready to hear God’s word. Long-ing and thirsting for righteousness, they are more ready to stop protecting the status quo and more ready for conversion. After fifteen hundred years in the Western church of trying to preach the gospel primarily to kings, princes, the rich and powerful, the message always seemed to get prostituted. We are beginning to
discover that when you preach to the prisoners, to the financially poor, the handicapped, to those who are not the beneficiaries of the system-then you get a much purer response to the gospel. It is not as likely to be used
and abused for the purposes of control and power and to support their system and worldview.
There is no chaining the word of God! But how many times do we attempt to do that very thing? Had the followers of Jesus or the teachers of the law or the Pharisees been
asked if the lepers should be cleansed or healed, the
answer would most likely have been, “No, they deserve their condition.”
The lepers would have been, perhaps, a mixed group, Galileans and Samaritans alike, the bond of their awful disease overcoming the pettiness of former
religious bickering. Jesus’ actions once again illustrate his vocation and ours: to reach out when healing is needed, to challenge when conversion is needed, to
console when comfort is needed. He also follows his own advice from last week’s Gospel: do what you have been commanded to do. When the cleansed
Samaritan has returned to give thanks, Jesus does not take it as an opportunity for self-aggrandizement, but
rather offers insight into faith.

The Prayer Request
A businessman needed a million dollars to close an important business deal. He went to church to pray for the money.
As he knelt and started praying, he noticed a man next to him praying for a hundred dollars so he could go to the doctor.
The businessman took out his wallet and pressed a hundred dollar bill into the other’s man’s hand.
Overjoyed, the man thanked him, got up and left the church.
The businessman then bowed his head, closed his eyes and began praying,
“And now, Lord, that I have your full, undivided attention…”
