SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER

Marriage and family – the subject of today’s Gospel – speaks to us even in this modern day. Jesus says the couple are “two in one flesh.” They are one, they are equals. When Jesus speaks at the same time of children, he makes it clear that children are a gift from God.

Tertullian in the second century (160-225) spoke of the “happiness of marriage” and “two believers who share one hope, one desire.” What more could a couple ask for than happiness and sharing one desire?

Here in the modern day the Bishops have written “Follow the Way of Love” about families. The message was written jointly with lay people and stated “when people talk about life in a family, they speak of love with its abiding peace, its searing pain, its moments of joy and disap-pointment, its heroic struggle and ordinary routines.” Sometimes it is hard to love when we are feeling upset or angry, but the love we feel for our family runs deep.

When Jesus spoke of love in the family he meant that the family re-flects the love of God – “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another.” (I John 4:9-11) And again in Ephesians, “Therefore, be imitations of God and live in love, as Christ loved us.” (Eph 5:2)

How can we be imitators of God’s love in our families? In this world?

Book drive for a middle school in Tonga. This school year, Queen of Apostles students are having a book drive for students at the Talafo’ou Middle School on

the small Island of Tonga, one of the schools affected by Cyclone Gita. One of our staff members took 13 high school students to Tonga in June with a company called Global Leaders. There, they painted the school, built desks, chairs and more! Last school year, we collected school supplies that were distributed to the students in Tonga. The middle school teachers at Talafo’ou would like to start a library so their students can learn English a little better. You are invited to contribute to the book drive which will be ongoing until April. Book donations can be dropped off in the school office. If you are interested in attending our school, then you are invited to our Mini Open House this Sunday, October 7, 2018 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm.

Peacemakers

St. John XXIII Feast Day October 11 Even though he was 77 when he was elected Pope, John XXIII exuded an enthusiasm for life, as would a younger man. Within a short time upon his election he called the Second Vatican Council into being, hoping to “open the windows” of the Church and let in some fresh air. The Council was a sign of extraordinary renewal in the Church – a positive dialogue between the Church and the modern world.

Pope John came to represent peace as he authored Pacem in Terris, the encyclical on peace as well as living his life as an example of how to be a peaceful person. He hoped for peace in every heart – “every be-liever must be a spark of light and a center of love.” In the arms race, “true and solid peace of nations consists not in equality of arms but in mutual trust alone.”

How can we bring a “spark of light and a center of love” to this world?
