SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER

“The High Cost of the Kingdom” could be the title of today’s Gospel. Jesus is not just saying that if we sacrifice all, we can reach heaven, but if we participate with Him we will reach heaven. He asks us to do quite a lot – to give up our wealth and follow him. The Apostles do not yet realize how Jesus will die, but they have been told that the road they choose is not easy.

So how do we participate in the life of Jesus? St. Mark high-lights six characteristics of Jesus that if we emulate Him will help us reach heaven. They are prayerful dependence, self-denial, faithfulness, generosity, humility and persistent faith. (see Mark 9:14-10:52 for extended version of the Gospel)

The Gospel today focuses on generosity. Jesus asks that the rich may give up his wealth. That is nearly impossible but pos-sible only with God’s help. Jesus says that spiritual rewards in the future will far outweigh any sacrifices we make now. But the rewards will come later, not in the present as some people presume.

Jesus pays the high cost of the Kingdom on our behalf. He is the ultimate generous one. We are called to follow him, to share in the rewards of heaven.

What are we holding onto that prevents us from being generous like Jesus?

Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today’s readings give us very clear directions on what it means to be a Christian. But as with most things we must be careful to apply our own minds and understandings to the words we have just heard so that we do not act foolishly or unlovingly to any one, including the one person we are most apt to ignore – ourselves.

In the first reading from Wisdom, Solomon, the wisest and wealthiest of the Jewish kings, states that, because he sought wisdom above all things, he has been blessed many times over with the lesser goods of gold and silver. Since the Holy Spirit personifies wisdom our message here is clear – seek first the things of the Spirit and all else will follow in due course.

In Hebrews, Paul has a similar message. He teaches that the Word of God, Jesus, is alive and very active in our daily life. Now the ancient Jews believed that words, especially names, took on an independent existence in reality and af-fected the person who uttered them in a very real way. So Paul is saying that the Word, Christ, sees into our very hearts. Nothing is hidden from Him. He will judge us in the end when we come before His throne. God will hold us accountable for how we behaved here in this temporary existence. Did we show love or did we concentrate on the pur-suit of worldly goods and pleasure? There is simply no escaping our accountability.

Lastly, we have the Gospel message of the rich young man who goes away saddened when Jesus tells him that, if he wishes to have it all he should give away all his possessions and follow Jesus. This is too much for the young man and he leaves. His possessions are too important to him. Living in Silicon Valley, I am sure we all know of people whose whole life is dedicated to amassing wealth and it is easy for us to criticize them – perhaps even with a tinge of envy. In any case, it is easy for us to judge that the young man did not act wisely but I think it is important to see all the details in this story so that we can apply it properly to our own lives.

The rich young man is a good person who admires Jesus. He calls him “Good teacher” which indicates he has accepted his teachings. It is also clear that this man kept the commandments. He did what was required of him. But he sought more because he had a certain emptiness within himself. Jesus saw this and the scripture says “He loved him.” Jesus invites him to follow Him by living a life of poverty. This is a shocking invitation to his audience because the people of this time believed that earthly wealth was a sign of God’s special favor for an individual. Jesus’ suggestion confuses even his own disciples, not just the young man.

Peter expresses this confusion when he asks how anyone can be saved if this is true. Jesus replies that it is impossible for humans to save themselves, but that God can and will if they follow His will. And when the very human Peter dares to ask if he and the other disciples will be rewarded for giving up what little they possessed, Jesus assures him they will. Peter is only asking the same question we all want answered. If we follow Jesus’ command to love will we be saved? And the answer he receives is the same answer we will receive.

Today, we all know people who have answered Jesus’ call, some rather dramatically. The thousands of our religious sisters and brothers as well as our own clergy have said yes to Jesus. That is rather obvious. But many others also have the mothers and fathers who sacrifice for their children, the generous benefactors who provide for the needs of the less fortunate, all have answered the call of Jesus to follow Him. So too have our many teachers who have eschewed wealth in order to help our children.

We do not know what happened to the young man who went away sad. Given the love Jesus had for him, however, it does not seem reasonable to assume that he was lost, but just left a little emptier than he could have been. We must now each ask ourselves if we too have answered Jesus’ call or will we be content to stay a little emptier than neces-sary. Our own hearts will give us the answer. God bless.

Dcn. Brian

Oskar Schindler Oct. 14

Among the heroes of the Holocaust, the German industrialist Oskar Schindler was a curious figure. He was a Catholic, but not noted for his strong faith. He was a member of the Nazi party. He used slave labor in Poland.

But in the end, he used his considerable ingenuity to save the Jews under his care. At some point he had a critical insight into the value of every human being. As the Talmud says,” He who saves one life saves the entire world.” The personal dangers he faced only emboldened him in his audacious mission. At one point he transferred the entire workforce of 1,100 from Poland to Czechoslovakia. He continued to save lives throughout the war.

He was one of a few who was inducted into the list of Right-eous Gentiles by the state of Israel. He was buried in Jerusalem.

As we reflect on our world and its many troubles, let us value every human being and make that conviction a reality.
