    Lot 618

** 2006 Kapa Haka (Maori Culture) 45c Poi self-adhesive single, unmounted. Unlisted by Campbell Paterson and Gibbons on the basis that they were not officially issued. By that reasoning, the Christchurch Exhibition 1d claret should be delisted, along with South Australia's 1/- violet, and any number of other stamps with a "colourful history".

The most controversial stamp release of recent times. We say "release" because New Zealand Post cancelled the issue only days before they were to go on sale on 7/6/2006. However, they had already sent out a number of mail orders to private individuals: surely that is an "official release". NZ Post then "requested" their clients to return the stamps and claim that two naive souls had actually done so! It is believed that a roll of 100 self-adhesives was issued. That's a tiny number for a popular country. By comparison, as many as 500 of NZ's 1996 unissued Teddy Bear "error" made it onto the market. They retail for $NZ4000-5000 each.
