John Sinfield notes that JB Cooke printed 13,440 reply cards by a print & turn method that resulted in 50% of theprinting having the unsurfaced face & 50% having the surfaced face. Only 7200 cards were distributed, all of them toWestern Australia. The balance were retained in stock in Melbourne. [There was no official date of issue. The first distributionwas on 17/5/1911, to Victoria & Western Australia. Supplies were sent soon after to the other States. The ACSCstates that the initial printing from an 8-on plate was not issued. This is an error. Recent research shows that printingfrom the 32-on plate commenced only on 17/6/1911. Madagascar received three each of three different portrait cards, one King, one Queen, & onePrince. These were overlapped & glued together in a single piece: King x3, Queen x3, Prince x3. At some point, thethree Prince of Wales cards were separated from the other six cards (which we believe remain as a single unit)]

The original stamp printing plate was defective & was broken down into single clichés, twelve ofwhich were used for the initial printing of Kangaroo Letter Cards. Most cards previously classified as "Die 2" will befound to be Original Die cards. See the ACSC at pages 13 & 14. (3)

[While it is well known that reply cards were separated &re-issued as single cards, it has generally been unknown that normal cards were also re-issued. The Fullface PostalCards were unpopular and they were withdrawn as soon as the 1d Kangaroo issue was available. In February 1917,in response to a critical shortage of Postal Cards, the old stock was re-issued to each State, on a needs basis.Examples of usage in 1917 are rare]

We could find no reference to a "Saltan" POW Camp. This may have been a mis-rendering of "Sagan", which was inwestern Poland. "Konstanse" or Konstanz is in the far south of Germany, on the Swiss border.

In October 1920, all post offices were advised that in future wrappers were to be used for posting only newspapers.Henceforth, all wrappers were required to bear the inscription 'NEWSPAPER ONLY'. In most cases this washand-written (or ignored!) but at least five handstamps were used. These handstamped wrappers are considered tojustify separate listings as provisional issues. It is indicative of their scarcity that, at present, only 7 of the 15 possiblecombinations of indicium & handstamp have been recorded, and only the Adelaide & Perth handstamps have beenpositively "tied". Because this class of wrappers have previously been largely unknown, we expect that the catalogueprices will prove to be conservative.
