PREPPIE Kindergarten Program

1982-2011


A Transitional Kindergarten program providing young kindergartners with a developmentally appropriate readiness curriculum that prepares

them for success in traditional Kindergarten.

• Elementary school district serving the suburban Huntington Beach, CA area

• Enrollment: 9750 students in grades K-8

• 2 Preschools, 11 Elementary Schools, 4 Middle Schools

• 7 Title I Schools

• 21% are English Learners

• 2011-2012: 9 PREPPIE classes district-wide

• PREPPIE Kindergarten program instituted in 1982

• Based on developmental stages (Piaget, Gesell)

• Learning through play and experience

Criteria for Placement

• July 1st to December 2nd birthdays are given Maturational Assessment Test

• Readiness based on academic, motor, social skills

• Students are placed according to developmental age

• Movement to traditional Kindergarten or

• 1st grade made by informed parental decision

• Full day Title I PREPPIE Program

• PREPPIE/Kindergarten clusters in same classroom

• 25% of incoming kindergartners are tested for the PREPPIE Program
