OCALA MACINTOSH USER GROUP NEWSLETTER VOLUME 130 - JUNE 2009 www.ocalamug.org page 1 Mugshot As I see it we have before us a great opportunity to improve our already very good MUG. We have a new meeting place with internet, storage, better parking, better kitchen and just better. We have a growing and enthusiastic membership. We have members that are talented in many ways. We have a great web site. We have folks who have expressed interest in Special Interest Groups which we are exploring. The MAC products are selling well and there is an ever growing community of MAC users for us to recruit to our group. As we grow and bring in more talented members we have a bigger knowledge base to draw on for more interesting and varied programs. If we work together and manage this opportunity well our meetings will be dynamite and our helpfulness to one another will be able to answer most any MAC question! Keep on inviting MAC users to our meetings. If we do a good job with the programs we will not have to ask people to join. They will be asking to join! All we have to do is get them to a meeting. The June program will be a presentation by Dr. Roberto Putzeys on “How to Find Reliable Medical Information on the Internet.” This will be the first program in our new location, the Family Wellness Center, and will provide an excellent opportunity to try out our new Internet access. I am looking forward to Dr. Putzeysʼ program later this month on using the internet to find reliable medical information. He asks that we give him a list of ailments or problems that we would like for him to research on line live as part of the program. We will collect the requests and sort them so that he can research the most often requested items. The President’s Corner by N.C. Sizemore Next Meeting Monday, June 22 @ 7 PM Family Wellness Center

Really Empty the Trash

It’s simple to delete unwanted files using Mac OS X Leopard: Just drag the files onto the Trash icon in the Dock (or select them and type Command-Delete), then choose Empty Trash in the Finder menu (or type Command-Shift-Delete). Alternately, you can double-click on the Trash icon to open it, then click on the Empty button.

Emptying the Trash in this manner clears room on your Mac for other files. But the data hasn’t actually been removed from your computer — the space occupied by these files is simply available to be overwritten by new information. Until this happens, it may be possible for someone to use data recovery software to restore your “deleted” files. And if this information is sensitive or confidential, it could potentially end up in the wrong hands.

That’s why Mac OS X Leopard provides another option for deleting data: the Secure Empty Trash command. Meant for those occasions when you want to permanently and immediately delete files, Secure Empty Trash overwrites your data

with digital gibberish, ensuring that your deleted data is gone for good. It may take a few moments longer, but it’s a good choice for deleting data you’re sure you don’t need — and don’t want anyone else to see.

To delete your Trash securely, go to the Finder menu and select Secure Empty Trash. A pop-up will ask you to confirm that you want to permanently erase the items in the Trash. Click OK, and these files will be gone forever.
