(From Pg1) I am continuing my 2014 goal to fully advance the Dames into the Internet age. If you have a facebook account please go to Ocala Royal Dames and “like” us. You will also want to see the FB page for Debutantes past and present. Many of you know my daughter Molly was diagnosed with Osteo-Sarcoma two weeks before last year’s ball. I am happy to report she is now cancer-free and coming to the ball this year with us to celebrate. My family endured cancer in 2013-14, involving both myself and my daughter. We could not have gotten through it without all your prayers and encouragement. We were so blessed to have been treated by some of the same researchers the Ocala Royal Dames provide funding support. Let’s all work together to raise another $100,000.00 this year to once again help Cancer Research and Education.

Warmest regards, Sharon

Year-end Birthday Gathering at Latinos y Mas All members are invited to attend every birthday celebration. Bring a friend with you as well. Right now we are in the middle of the Tiara Ball so look for your invitation. Mark your calendar for March with date TBA for the next birthday luncheon. We had a wonderful time at Latino’s y Mas and hope to do our January, February, March meeting there. — Teula Bondank, chair.

Tiara Ball 2015 Next meeting Feb.12, 10 am Honda of Ocala, 2nd Floor

Color the evening royal blue and expect royal treatment the night of Saturday, Feb. 28, with the unveiling of the 29th Annual Tiara Ball, the highlight of the Ocala Royal Dames social calendar. The Ball will be at Circle Square Cultural Center, 8395 SW 80th Street, beginning at 6 p.m. This year’s theme, “Dames, Diamonds & Pearls,” sets the tone for formal attire. Chairs Bernadeth Paraiso and Naida Rasbury have brought together a “cast of hundreds” who are entering the final phase of frantic activity putting the details together for the big night. Guests will enter a ballroom of blue and white elegance to the music of a four-piece combo “The Usual Suspects” playing all the favorite songs beginning at 6:30. “Prior to that, deejay Josh Angel will spin the spotlight tunes for early dancing. Dancers will especially like the hardwood floor,” Bern added. Hors d’oeuvre will be served butler-style during the reception. The dinner menu begins with hearts of palm salad, a main course of 4-ounce beef filet and 4-ounce serving of tomato pesto chicken, steamed vegetables almandine and tortellini pasta. A trio dessert brings a touch of sweet concluding the final course. Brick City Catering Inc. is handling the dinner preparations. (More, Pg4)

(From Pg3) “To assist with getting from the parking area to the center, the Rock Star Limo Party Bus will be transporting ball-goers. The limo service will also be providing transportation for some of our ladies attending as singles who want to go in a group. The limo will pick up, and return, from a specific location in town — traveling to the center in style,” Naida explained. Contact Sharon Cooper, (861-9404 or 427-4617) to make arrangements. “We have a full evening planned. We intend to amaze,” Bern said. Master of Ceremonies is Chip Morris; Bernadette Castro is Royal Knight presenter and guest auctioneer. The 2015 Royal Knight inductee is Dr. Mark Jank. This year’s debutantes twirling in lovely gowns in their presentation ceremony include Sadie Cannon, Grace Ergle, Heather Jan Green, Syria Jacobi and Erica Reese. (Photos, Pg5)

There are a number of stellar Live Auction items such as a Paso Fino Fiesta limited to 20 guests.

This Fiesta auction item includes a demonstration by the World and National Champion Paso Finos of ORD member Norma Chicklo. Norma and her neighbors, JC Racing and Diana Vanegas are collaborating on this beautiful presentation. The affair is being held at the Venegas stables. Following their performance will be dinner by the Chef at Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club featuring grass-fed Argentinian beef with traditional accompaniments, fine Argentinian wines and Latin music for dancing. “This is truly a one-of-a-kind item,” Naida said. “We must also mention the pair of dazzling 18-k white gold earrings with Molly Necklace pendant. For a donation of $50 per ticket, someone could win this lovely jewelry set,” Bern said. This is donated by Lemieux Diamond Company. Naida said, “Invitations have been mailed and RSVP/tickets deadlines are upon us. Get your group together for a table.” “You can see, this is going to be a great evening with many surprises,” Bern emphasized. The annual Tiara Ball is the main money-raiser for the year to fund Cancer Research upholding the ORD ideal that “Through research a cure is possible in our lifetime.”

FUNDING ALLOCATIONS

Kudos, Dr. Julie

April: Proposal evaluation The Dames received a letter from Dr. Nancy Mendenhall telling us about the meeting of the North American Chapter of the Particle Therapy Cooperative Group. This was a 3-day scientific program with over 100 presentations of various kinds that were selected by a team of reviewers.

The paper of Dr. Julie Bradley who is one of the researchers we support, was selected. Her “abstract got the most points of any submission so her paper was chosen for an oral presentation and she was given the prize for the best scientific presentation!” Dr. Bradley was the speaker at our Women of Hope luncheon this past fall.

Congratulations to Dr. Bradley!

The Funding Allocations committee is responsible for selecting the researchers who receive Royal Dames funding. The committee does not meet regularly but does receive updates on the progress of the research we fund. In March of 2015, committee members will receive the proposals of the scientists from Moffitt and UF.

In early April, we will meet as a committee to evaluate the proposals and select recipients for the 2016-2018 funding cycle. If you would like to be part of the committee please contact me by email at [email protected] (preferably) or phone 873-7197.

Development Committee

Patricia Sokol, Chair

(Non-Event Fundraising) Board Report ~ January 21, 2015

I. 2014 Annual Fund ~ all letters, brochures and GivingTuesday announcements went out to 500 names plus all ORD members. Thank you to everyone who helped write and stuff envelopes!

▪ Total given this year including two late checks was $3,340.

▪ Research states that it takes about 3 to 5 years to get a good Annual Fund campaign on an ongoing basis.

▪ The Development Committee will continue to tweak this effort and report back to the Board.

II. Thank you to Corinne for designing the Giving Tuesday flyer and also for the E-Blast that will easy to forward to everyone on your address book.

▪ This year we received $150 from this effort; however it was our first year.

▪ As members become more comfortable and accustomed to social media this will increase over the coming years.

▪ The NonProfit Times newsletter for January reported that this was a good year for Giving Tuesday and that it took 3 years to get to this point. The key to their success are the social media including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

III. Data base ~ addresses ▪ Barbara Hunter worked closely with

the committee to correct addresses for both the annual fund and the Tiara Ball. We appreciate so much her attention to detail! And Thank you to everyone who helped!

IV. The Committee plans to concentrate on Planned Giving for the first part of the New Year as well as updating the database.

V. The Development Committee will meet again in March — to be announced.
