• Economy downturn: among the causes– Iraq war: with a cost of 13 billion dollars for troops deployment of the war and 9 billion

dollars per month plus the cost of occupation of Iraq at a cost of 4 billion per month

• Financial crisis nationwide: an average of 2,600 houses are in foreclosure process daily

- Massive banks failures

• Unemployment risen from December 2007 to the present; from 632,000 to 3.6 million

Jobless rates for teenagers 20.8 (11.7 African-american/9.1 Latinos)

Voters reasons to elect Obama:

Desire to improve United States diplomatic relations.

Improve the responsibility of USA citizens within their own people.

Education at High School Level

• Expand High-Quality Afterschool Opportunities: Obama and Biden will double funding for the main federal support for afterschool programs, the 21st Century Learning Centers program, to serve one million more children.

• Support English Language Learners: Obama and Biden support transitional bilingual education and will help Limited English Proficient students get ahead by holding schools accountable for making sure these students complete school.

Education agenda for HSSupport High-Quality Schools and Close

Low-Performing Charter Schools: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will double funding for the Federal Charter School Program to support the creation of more successful charter schools. The Obama-Biden administration will provide this expanded charter school funding only to states that improve accountability for charter schools, allow for interventions in struggling charter schools and have a clear process for closing down chronically underperforming charter schools. Obama and Biden will also prioritize supporting states that help the most successful charter schools to expand to serve more students.

College

• Support College Credit Initiatives: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will create a national "Make College A Reality" initiative that has a bold goal to increase students taking AP or college-level classes nationwide 50 percent by 2016, and will build on Obama's bipartisan proposal in the U.S. Senate to provide grants for students seeking college level credit at community colleges if their school does not provide those resources

• Support College Outreach Programs: Obama and Biden support outreach programs like GEAR UP, TRIO and Upward Bound to encourage more young people from low-income families to consider and prepare for college.

JobsIntegrate Service into Learning• Expand Service-Learning at schools: set a goal of 50 hours of community

service a year. Obama will develop national guidelines for service-learning which will include better tools to develop program and to document student experience.

• Green Job Corps: Energy focused youth jobs programs to provide disadvantage youth with services opportunities weatherizing buildings and getting practical experience in fast growing career fields.

• Expand YouthBuild Program: Currently the YouthBuild program offers 8,000 low-income young people a chance to learn housing construction job skills and complete their high school education. This program will be expanded to 50,000 slots over the next eight years.

• Promote College Serve-Study: will ensure that at least 25% of College work-study funds are used to support public service opportunities.

Community Development• Classrooms Corps: the use of retired engineers and scientists to provide support for

math and science teachers in the form of mentoring students, tutoring, curriculum development and technology support.

• Health Corps: to improve public health information and outreach to areas with inadequate health systems such as rural areas and inner cities. Participants will provide basic health information and would be trained to assist health professionals.

• Clean Energy Corps: to promote energy independence though efforts like weatherization, renewable energy projects and educational outreach. Participants will work in many environmental projects such as clean up of polluted land and water.

• Veterans Corps: to help keep America’s sacred trust with it’s veterans. This participants will assist veterans at Department of Veterans Affairs facilities, nursing homes and shelters.

• Homeland Security Corps: to help communities to plan, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Participants will include full time members who work with communities ti help them plan and prepare for emergency response as well as group of volunteers who can be mobilized to help in a national disaster.

Ideas for Community Service/for Community Change

• First, create a group (friends, family, teammates) and make a pledge of service to your community

• Organize small events in your community:– Participate in your school community service– Read to small kids at day care centers– Clean a park– Do a children book drive– Donate your time to help the elderly
