At a G&T Singing Workshop our pupils again shone with their ability,

confidence and behaviour. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience

and performed well in the session which also contained GCSE

    students from Frome College.

A number of pupils attended a Summer picnic at Jackdaws, Great

Elm on Wednesday 12th June. Oakfield pupils opened the

performance with songs from the recent Wonderfully Wicked show.

They performed with superb confidence and set the tone for a great

morning. Pupils interacted with first school pupils really well, taking

time to sing with them, cheering them on and acting as great role

models and ambassadors for Oakfield. Well done. MR WILLIAMS

    We have recently held some

    family learning sessions where

    parents and children came along

and cooked over a 3-day period,

    to actively work together in

producing a tea party for invitedguests. Led by Mrs Applegate

and Ms Lucas, the feedback was

    very positive. Families spent

quality time together in a social

    environment. Staff and

    Governors also attended and

    agreed how thoroughly tasty the

tea was. We plan to hold more

family learning sessions - contactMrs Applegate if interested.

    The first phase of our

    open play areaimprovements are now

    well and truly underway.

MY FIRST TRIP TO CHARTERHOUSE by Mr Reynolds 8I

The 2013 residential trip to Charterhouse was a first time visit for me

during my time here at Oakfield Academy and it was an experience that has

created several unforgettable memories. It was a pleasure to see all 33

pupils out of the classroom environment and to share the activities that

they took part in with such enthusiasm and commitment. They were all

fantastic in attempting activities such as archery, caving, abseiling and team

building exercises such as shelter building and walking the night line. I hope

the memories created for the pupils are ones that last forever as memories

from my residential trips have done, and they recognise what achievements

they conquered and take great pride in being fantastic representatives of

    the school.

I also have to pass on a big thank you to Miss Pullen, Mr Fowler and of

course Mr Gerrish for preparing and delivering the introductory 11 mile walk

in to the centre across the Mendips and being the cause of several giant

blisters that needed treatment later on that evening. It was a pleasure tosee all pupils trying out new things and conquering any hesitation with sheer

determination and support from each other and the excellent centre staff.

A brilliant time was had by all and as a first timer to the trip I was able to

clearly see why the trips to Charterhouse have become a valued tradition at

    Oakfield Academy.

YEAR 7 HAVE A TALK FROMSEAN FENTON OF THE T.A DURING

    ENRICHMENT AFTERNOON

LILY 7D: At our recent Enrichment

session, we were spoken to by Sean

Fenton from the Armed Forces. I enjoyed

hearing about snipers, although it was

rather gross. We also got the chance to try

on a gas mask, a helmet and try to pick up

his rucksack. We had a great time andsome of year 7 are now considering the

option of joining the armed forces as their

    future career.

JACK 7I: The gas mask was very hot and

hard to breathe inside properly. They used

it in gas chambers but I wouldn't want to

    use one in an emergency!

KONNOR 7P: I loved the army man. I

picked up his rucksack but it was so heavy

as it weighed 25kg! It was sad to hear

about the children losing limbs due to the

    mines.

This trip has been really, really fun!

My French family were nice and kind.

The visit to France challenged my

French but I liked that. To tell the

truth, I am glad I do not attend the

    Collge Desnos because the hours

are long each day. However, the

children and the lessons are very

good. The workshops we attended in

Arville were excellent and I liked

    spending time with my

    correspondent. Mine and Chloes

    favourite activity was making our

leather bracelets. Paris was the best

day and the sunshine was brilliant.

On this hot day we saw many sights

    which were fantastic!

    Rhiannon James 7I

We really enjoyed our trip to France.

It was a great experience and we

would encourage other pupils to go

in the future. The stay in host

families worked very well and it was

    different from staying with your

friends. Our favourite part was the

trip to Paris. It was thrilling and veryinteresting. The weather was brilliant

and we would love to go again!

Evie Gardiner & Laura James 8P

How wonderful it has been to travel

back to my home country with such

    supportive staff and enthusiastic (so

    well behaved!) pupils from Oakfield

    Academy. Everyone made the most

of the experience and the children

were a real credit to both their

parents and our school. We were

    blessed with beautiful sunshine

throughout our stay and, even after

such a short visit, saying goodbye to

our hosts wasnt an easy task! My

    strongest memory is of seeing

    French and English students working

    collaboratively, playing and relaxing

together without letting their linguistimperfections and cultural

    differences get in the way.

    AMAZING

    PERFORMANCE

    After months of

    rehearsals the

    FLG group finally

    performed their

    version of themusical Oliver to

    a captivated

    audience of pupils,

    staff, parents and

    guests.

    From the very

    start the cast

    enthralled

    onlookers with

    their renditions of

    the popular songs.

Special mentions go to Aaron Cooper for his confident delivery of Consider Yourself, and

the delightfully comical version of Oom-Pah-Pah by Georgina Cooper. Other favourites with

the audience were Food Glorious Food, Id Do Anything, and the touching Where Is Love?

caused many a tearful eye in the room. The Academy Choir supported the cast with their

marvellous singing, to the music provided by Mr Williams. As the final curtain was drawn the

audience went absolutely mad and the applause was deafening.

    Mrs Brooks and

    Mrs Shields were

    presented with

    flowers at the end.

    Mrs Brooks said:

    What can I say? I

am so proud of myclass, they were all

    amazing. It just

    goes to show what

    Oakfield Academy

can do for all of its

    children. A huge

    thank you to

    everyone who

    helped andsupported us.

    Well done FLG!

    Eco Workshop at Bruton

A group of Year 4 gifted andtalented girls had the wonderfulopportunity to spend the day atBruton School for Girls recently, participating in an Eco-Outdoorworkshop. They identified faunaand flora in the nature reserve, were inspired by an African storyto make necklaces and toasted

marshmallows over a camp firethey helped to build.

It was really amazing and fun toexperience the eco and wildlifeactivities. It was so different to anormal school day! said Aya andSaffron.

A great day was had by all, including Mrs Baillie-Smith who

accompanied them, and hadattended the school herself as ayoung girl. Well done girls.

On Friday 14th June some students went on atrip to the Bristol Festival of Nature. When wegot there we split into groups. My group wentto do a plant doctor activity first, where you hadto match the plant diseases with the humanones. Next, we talked about bacteria in yourown urine! In another activity we were

experimenting with glowing bacteria, we evenwent into a pitch black tent (that was rathersmelly) to look at some glowing bacteriait wasreally fun.

Some other activities we did were watching avideo and playing games to do with Siberiantigers, making kites and investigating DNA.Did you know we share half of our own DNA

with a banana? It was an exciting trip and I

hope I get to do something like it again.
