Sales Update David Vander Pol

Congrats to those districts who hit goal in March:• All Districts - revenue goal• Eastern WA - O.R goal• Canadian freight attainment

We obtained a 93.6 for the month of March compared to 94.3 of last year. For the quarter we were 97.3 compared to 97.5 for last year. Congratulations on a great month of revenue and cost containment side.

We are being challenged when it comes to our on time service. Much of this is caused by staffing shortages. It is more and more difficult to find quality drivers. I was at a meeting of five hundred (500) transporta-tion professionals and the question was asked, “how many people in the crowd were recommending to their children to become truck drivers?” No one in the

crowd raised their hand. The culture today is telling all children you are failure unless you go to college. I would suggest that is incorrect, a person can be fulfilled and make a good wage by being a profes-sional truck driver. Other trades, such as carpenter, mechanics, welders are finding this same challenge, finding quality people to come to work.

Last month we reported on ULine of Au-burn, WA., I am happy to report that our initial shipments were very successful and they have ramped up the business.

We have several other customers in the hopper looking to come on with us i.e. Big Lots with a consolidation in Fontana and Cummins do a pool distribution over our L/A Terminal.

Congratulations to the BEST IN CLASS leaders: Group One (1) - Anthony Gon-zales and Gerrit Foster, Group Two (2) - Amy Baribault and Brian Cliett, Group Three (3) - Nancy Nicholson, Mark We-ber and Kevin Loughlin, and National - David Stastny

This month I would like to touch on another key in-gredient to the success of Oak Harbor Freight Lines and its employee’s. In fact it is one of the main parts of our current mission statement.

All of us are keenly aware of the day to day challenges that all of our employee’s face in a very diverse and changing transportation environment. We have im-plemented and discussed very specific Critical Pro-cesses that provide day to day consistency in most of what we do.

One thing that separates us from the competition is the ability to be “flexible”, when necessary to meet an internal or external customer’s need. This flexibility,

allows our team to be very CREATIVE in its think-ing, when working to find the perfect solution for our customers.

Our team members are constantly involved in day to day decisions on how we can work on a win/win so-lution, and bring another valued customer into our network. It is also this creative thinking that helps us to work on improving our long term customers expe-rience with OHFL. As customers needs and demands continue to change, Oak Harbor Freight Lines will be right there to help them meet their customers sup-ply chain requirements……THROUGH CREATIVE SOLUTIONS.

We have started out the year with very strong revenue growth and operating at a profit. This happened in spite of some difficult weather throughout our system. Our revenue growth for the first quarter was 7%. We were planning on a 4% growth, so you can see that this ad-ditional business was a challenge to our system. We have additional equipment coming on board now but we needed some of that addition-al capacity in the first quarter. As stated above, we will be receiving new equipment in the next few months. Some of this will be replacement and some for additional capacity. We will be getting 18 P&D tractors, 41 Line tractors, 15 dol-lies and 100 trailers. Please note the new decal on the back of our new trailers which memorializes our Dad.As most of you know, we lost our Mom on February 8th. She was a Godly woman who spent her life serving her husband, her family and

many others. She prayed for everyone in our family every day by name. She also prayed for our business and safety for our employees every day. We take comfort in knowing that she is with the Lord she loved and served her whole life. Thank you for the many cards and prayers. We have had made many changes in Leadership positions in the last 6 months. I congratulate and welcome these employees to their new positions:1. Jesse Botelho – Human Resource Manager2. Steve Pohas – Southern Calif District Manger3. Lance Scott – Western Washington, Oregon and Idaho District Manager4. Henry Vander Pol – Line Haul Manager5. Mike Brooks – Montebello Terminal Manager6. Gerrit Foster – AMC Supervisor7. Kevin Kellermann – Vice President of Operations8. Tim Wallmark – Sacramento Terminal Manager9. Tim Baird – Stockton Terminal ManagerWe are fortunate that most of the important positions were filled by current Oak Harbor employees. God con-tinues to bring us outstanding leaders to help us manage this company.I am excited about this New Year and looking forward to continuing to “Bring Peace of Mind” to our custom-ers in 2014.

W. Washington, Oregon and Idaho District Update“Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success” –Abdul KalamMarch was a FANTASTIC month for both the Western Washington and Oregon/Idaho districts. Western Washington topped it’s revenue goal by 6% and Oregon/Idaho beat it’s revenue goal by 3%. What’s the key to whipping the revenue goal? New Cheese! Western Washington had $82k in new cheese Oregon/Idaho totaled $54k in new cheese. A big congratulations to all the teams in these districts for a successful March!March’s Employee Spotlight is shining on Auburn’s Terminal Manager, Joe Cook.Joe was born in Willows, CA and was raised in the farmlands of Glenn, Colu-sa, & Butte Counties. The Importance of Mentoring My name is Josh Buck. I am a Chaplain at the Montebello ter-minal in Los Angeles. I grew up in the Seattle area and moved down to California in 2004. I currently pastor a local church in Northeast Los Angeles called Antioch and have a wife and two daughters. I will be writing a few articles on mentoring—hope you learn something.

I met an Oak Harbor driver when I was 15yrs old while working at a warehouse in Sumner, Washington. As a young man I was soaking up so much information from the drivers, dockworkers, and in the break room. Everything was so new to me and to be honest, I felt pretty dumb. After about 3yrs of labeling Panasonic freight and getting my bear-ings in the warehouse and its culture, I stopped learning. Basically, things became so normal and repetitive that I stopped learning. Even though I was happy to get a paycheck I considered the job boring. I stopped challeng-ing myself and therefore stopped learning. What happened to me at the warehouse happens to lots of people in life. They stop asking questions, stop being attentive, and stop learning. When this happens—you stop develop-ing as a person and like a tree with no water, you cannot grow as you should.

As a Chaplain who has had hundreds of conversations with employees at Oak Harbor I get a frequent comment. Guys tell me, “Josh, I have been working here a while and the job gets boring.” In one sense I totally understand because I have worked a number of jobs that once mastered, can become repetitiously boring. But on the other hand I don’t understand when people say this. Sometimes I want to look back and say, “Your job will only teach you so much. Learning is up to you. Being stimulated and “un-bored” is up to you. If you are bored, it is not your job’s fault.”

If your work situation is boring, if life feels mundane, or you are having problems that are not getting fixed—it is up to you to do something about it.

Once you pass your 20’s and get a feel for how life will unfold, many people stop learning at the rate they once did. Many of us go home to our family to eat, watch TV, and go to bed. The weekends are often filled resting or doing activities that we find fun. We don’t always fill our time with activities that will cause us to grow as people. For those working at Oak Harbor who find work boring, those who want to grow as a person, or need help in a certain area of life—get a mentor.

One of the most effective ways to grow as a person is to identify someone who can help you in an area of your life where you have stopped learning or are weak.

These people are called mentors. They could be co-workers, family members, members of your religious com-munity, or long time friends. If life were a long journey, mentors are the people a few steps ahead of you in the areas where you need to learn, grow, and develop personally.

Next month’s article we will talk about how to identify and get a mentor.

Under a gorgeous sunny Saturday morning, April 12th, the Spokane Team had its Henry VanderPol Award Cel-ebration Breakfast. This was a breakfast buffet for all employees and their spouses at Twigs Bistro. Our Team was greeted by Kevin Kellermann and his wife Mari Lyn, along with our District Manager Joel Spencer and his wife Lori. We wanted a Saturday event, so all employees would be able to attend.

Kevin and Joel gave short speeches on how great an accomplishment it is for the Spokane Team to this presti-gious award. Branon Smith, Terminal Manager, gave a small speech thanking all of his employees for contribut-ing in bringing the HVP to Spokane!

It was good time for employees to meet and greet with spouses and get a chance to talk with members from our Leadership Team. Shirts and pens were presented to employees and lots of pictures were taken with the award!

Team Fontana held their Henry Vander Pol Legacy Award Celebration on Friday April 11th! A delicious BBQ meal from “Joey’s Bar-B-Q” was prepared and enjoyed at two different meal periods in an effort to reach the majority of employees. Families were also invited to attend the meal periods and many did! It was a great opportunity for spouses and children to share in the award with their Oak Harbor family members. The celebration also consisted of an exciting raffle with all em-ployee’s names in a tumbler and a chance to win. Children of our employees were picked out of the crowd to draw the names at both morning and evening meals which made the drawings even more exciting and fun! A dozen prizes were won by employees in all departments and the grand prize 32” TV was won by city driver, Edwin Medina, (top left corner). The FON team all wore their HVP T-shirts with pride and enjoyed the camaraderie in achieving this goal. Dan Vander Pol and Steve Pohas (second picture from left on the top row) were also present throughout the day to speak to the employees and their families providing recognition for their efforts!

Mike Weiler, At Inland Pipe YakimaMike Weiler - Yakima’s senior driver with 22 years of service all here in Yakima. I asked him about his years here and he stated he “ Just really likes his job, and everyone he works with”. He enjoys his customers both internal and external and the feeling is mutual. He is always willing to give some advice from his years behind the wheel, and he does so with a smile. He wears his passion for his job on his sleeve. So if he is giving you a quick wave in the morning saying “ Morning Boss” or a “ See ya tomorrow”, there is a positive inflection in the way he says it. Thanks Mike for the positive attitude, keep it up it’s contagious!!

Greetings from San Diego where we have officially relocated to our new facility in Poway CA. As you can see from the pictures, our move upgraded our facilities tremendously.

Apart from offering more dock space, we now have the opportunity to sell warehousing for the area. First cus-tomer starts in June and we hope many will follow.

I am happy to report that after some minor hiccups, all phones and computers are up and running. The old phone #’s for the terminal will ring at the new location so you can continue to use the one’s listed.

Special thanks to the Fontana customer service team as they helped San Diego in many different ways during our transition. Customers were kept happy because of their efforts

March was another exciting and successful month for the CN district in terms of revenue growth and CPB, however, we are still being challenged in the service department. Our per day revenue goal was $65,101 and our actual was $65,693. That’s a 1.3% above the goal and 2.3% above SMLY. Most of our focus in April has been in identifying service failure root caused and establish-ing action plans to improve. Some progress has been made but we have a little ways to go still. In this edition I want highlight two of our termi-nals, Redding and Eureka for accomplishing 2 major achievements in 2013.Redding – As most of you know, Redding was the recipient of the 2013 HVP award in group 1. In late March we celebrated this major accomplishment at a dinner engagement in Redding ca. We had a full attendance, with participation from spouses, sons, daughters and in one case, the date was the mother on one of our drivers, very sweet!!. In attendance was also

Tim Wallmark, T/M, Marcelo Varela, D/M and Eric Vander Pol as a representative of the family. Please help me in congratulating Redding for being the re-cipients of this very import award. Way to go guys!!!Eureka – Also this year, we had the privilege of celebrating with the Eureka team for their accomplishments in safety. I was honored to join the ENTIRE Eureka team and significant others along with Alex Botsford, EKA TM and David Martin, Safety and Recruiting Manager, for a dinner celebrations. Safety is one of those subjects that is often taken for granted, until something serious occurs. Well, Eureka did not look at it that way, they were proactive all year round and managed to remain safe and accident free. Please help me in congratulating this team as well for a job well done in creating an accident-free culture at their terminal.

Congratulations to our Yakima WA Terminal in completing 2013 with Zero Lost Time Injuries. Their outstanding accomplishment was celebrated with lunch provided on Friday April 11. We appreciate their commitment to safe work.Pictured (L-R)– District Manager Joel Spencer, Oscar Ramos, Tony Holm, Rico Alvarado and Terminal Manager Brian Cliett.

The Safety Department would like to congratulate the terminals listed below for outstanding accident and/or injury prevention. Three terminals completed 2013 with ZERO Preventable Accidents and ZERO Lost Time Inju-ries. Five others completed 2013 with ZERO Lost Time Injuries. As we did last year, we will be presenting each of these terminals with plaques for their outstanding accomplishments. Accident and injury prevention reduces costs and more importantly means our employees go home safe and healthy to their families each day.

We ask that each terminal plan a date that we can share in celebration of these accomplishments. Dependent upon operational necessity, we will serve either a barbecue or breakfast as recognition. Please advise Kevin Kell-ermann, your District Manager, David Martin and myself of dates that work best for your terminal. We would like to personally present the plaques and thank employees for their commitment to working safely.
