bizZone is a web technology company located in Gormley in the original post of-fice and general store building. Originally

starting out as a web design firm, bizZone has morphed and evolved into a highly sophisticated company that has a software platform focus.

bizZone has enjoyed a steady growth rate from 5 to 12 employees and continues to grow. Their offices and board-room now occupy two floors of the historic site that backs on to Stouffville Road near Woodbine Avenue.

They have developed two main products - an association management software system and a content manage-ment solution. bizZone’s aim is to transition customer relationship management (CRM) and back-of-office oper-ations to an efficient, online platform, with accompanying content management and membership forms, an auto-mated system to comply with anti-spam legislation and an e-commerce platform.

bizZone has helped organizations develop bilingual and cross-platform websites, noting that the website today is like a phone, a medium to provide access to many differ-ent apps.

The greatest challenge for bizZone involves their location, which, although directly next door to Highway 404, lacks adequate transit service and broadband connectivity. “It is strange that being a borough of one of the largest cities in the world, with a brand new GO Station a stone’s throw away, that there are no viable transit options for our staff to commute to work,” says Julie King, bizZone President & CEO. “Infrastructure and access are critical for attracting the talent we need and impact decisions on where to locate,” she adds.

Your Honey Fried Chicken is reported to be the “best ever with terrifically crunchy skin”. What dish is the best, or are we missing something? CHRISTOPHER: Yes, the chicken is a popular menu item and has been since we opened 2.5 years ago.

We are also very proud of our coffee beef brisket and there’s always something interesting to try on our seasonal menu.

You are repeatedly described as “knowing your stuff”, what’s your background? CHRISTOPHER: I’m a chef by trade and have been in the industry for over a decade now. I’ve always been interested in cuisine and cooking. I guess it’s easier to convey more about the things you’re passionate about.

Reviewers often mention your selection of drinks and your uncanny ability to suggest good pairings. One patron even called you a “huge cocktail nerd”- is this true?CHRISTOPHER: It’s true that I think entirely too much about cocktails. I’ve always had an interest in bartending, and in a lot of ways, it’s similar to cooking so it was a natural fit. We try to offer the best of Ontario whether it be beer, wine, or cocktails. What’s great food without great drinks?

Some kids have said that you have “the best Mac & Cheese ever”. Another reviewer says that you “love kids and cater to their every complaint”. Why do you cater to children? CHRISTOPHER: I have a young family of my own so I guess I can relate. One of the things I enjoy most is watching

my kids finish their plate, so when we recipe tested the Mac & Cheese, we knew it would be a hit when it was unanimously kid approved.

Would it be fair to say that The Smokery is more of a foodie place than it is a smoke house?CHRISTOPHER: We will always be a smoke house first but the foodies do seem to appreciate our non-processed ingredients and made in-house approach to our menu. Our seasonal dishes allow us to be a bit more creative but it’s our classic bbq recipes that have become the signature of our menu.

Christopher Waye is owner and head chef of the Smokery Kitchen & Bar located in Downtown Stouffville at 6140 Main St. He and his family live locally.

Busy at his well-worn back work benches, sur-rounded by minuscule tools and his jewel crafting microscope, David Barthau is focused on placing a large Canadian diamond upon a ring that was jointly designed by him and his customer.

Watching David in action is a flashback to the old days when the precision of human touch mat-tered most. Wearing a tie and buttoned-up vest, he is dressed for the task at-hand.

When David animatedly explains the details involved in crafting custom jewellery, you can tell that this is his happy place – a place where barely visible bits of precious stones are bonded to cov-eted metals. But, as he explains, the action begins with design. Barthau Jewellers are one of the few jewellers in Ontario that have the latest digital and crafting technology available in-house. He begins by creating a 3-D digital design, followed by the creation of an actual 3-D model to enable you to see what the finished piece will look like before it is made. Finally, he mills or grows the design in wax and casts it in the selected precious metal.

David brought out his iPad, which is filled with photo after photo of one-off jewellery made to a customer’s spec. There is a story behind every photograph – some show a new combination of two or more sentimental family heirlooms, while others are dreams being realized. Barthau Jewel-lers is a third generation family-run, independent jewellery store. The Stouffville store was opened by Janet and David Barthau in 1978. Darren, the eldest of David and Janet’s three kids, is involved in the business as well.

Beyond retail sales, the store at 5758 Main Street offers watchmaking, engraving, jewellery servic-ing & cleaning, Gemologist-level appraisals, and trade-in services.

BALLANTRAE COMMUNITYAs neighbours and fellow Ballantrae business owners, Brian Freedman and Diamantis Apolonatos know each other well. They exchange a warm welcome. I ask Brian what he likes best about the renowned Country Stop Burgers, he says “this guy, he makes the place.”

DIAMANTIS APOLONATOSCOUNTRY STOP BURGERSFew know Diamantis by his real name, but most everyone knows the anglicized version - “Diamond”. Diamond has lived in the area for 30 years and has owned Country Stop Burgers (est. 1976) since 1988.

Diamond moved to Canada from

Greece in 1974, where he had been a trained watchmaker, but no one would recognize his educational credentials here. He instead became a cook.

Country Stop Burgers produces some of the best burgers around, yet souvlaki is one of the best sellers. Word-of-mouth praise for their homemade tzatziki sauce drives new business into the store.

Diamond refers to the restaurant as his second home. He and his wife Angeliki are here 7 days a week. His kids, now grown up, were seemingly raised in the store as well.

Diamond says that he only uses the best food: “I eat here too. If I don’t like it, it’s no good for customers.” Nearly everything is homemade at Country

Stop Burgers. The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. in winter, and 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. in summer. It is located on Highway 48, just south of Aurora Rd and Lakeshore Rd.

BRIAN FREEDMANBALLANTRAE GEEKA typical day for the Ballantrae Geek involves spending time in the home of clients to install, set up, troubleshoot, and provide general assistance with their computers, mobile devices and other technology based equipment like TV and A/V systems. His clients are principally located in Stouffville, Uxbridge, Aurora and Newmarket. It will be coming up to 5 years since Brian and his wife Mary relocated from Mississauga to Ballantrae. They

were looking for a quieter place to live with a community feel, yet still reasonably close to amenities. When asked about golf Brian says: “I do enjoy getting out for a round of golf, if you can call it that, but unfortunately I don’t really think golf likes me so much. So I stick to tennis for the most part,” says Brian. Brian feels that it is important to get involved, give back and to make a contribution to improving the community where one lives, even if it is in small ways. He is the Photography Coordinator for the community’s quarterly magazine called Home on the Green, and is involved with the Stouffville Food Bank, coordinating a

Located in the former IGA building in Downtown Stouffville at 6327 Main Street, Stouffville Fine Furniture will soon celebrate its 25 year anniversary. At 10,000 square feet, it is the largest furniture showroom in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Stouffville Fine Furniture only sells furniture that is made in Canada. Ville Papas is the owner of this family-run business; her husband and one of their sons are also involved. Ville says that “we made a conscious decision years ago to stand

behind the Canadian furniture industry.” The Papas family has long-standing relationships with manufacturers. “We go direct and obtain volume pricing,” says Ville, “we know what we are getting and how it is built from the inside out.”

Ville explains that when one buys Canadian furniture, they are paying for the weight of product - a product that is regulated by the government and adheres to health & safety guidelines. “As for offshore products,” states Ville, “the cost is more about international freight & tax.”

Brian has been referred to as part of the “dynamic duo” with Al Moldon, the PC Doctor, who was the pioneer in bringing affordable computer and technology support to Ballantrae over

10 years ago. “Al and I complementeach other and often partner to teach and solve more complex problems that come up from time to time. We also back each other up to ensure there is continuity of service to our clients during periods of vacation,” says Brian. Teaching is one of his passions and he has taught courses at the

Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library, the 55+ Club and the Ballantrae Golf & Country Club. He is in the process of launching a series of small group workshops (4-6 participants) to be held in his home-based conference room. For Brian, all of this really started as a hobby after retiring from a corporate banking career. His greatest source

of satisfaction is helping people, “seniors in particular, to embrace and master technology. It can help them stay connected with friends and family, keep current, stay mentally active and expand their scope of leisure activities.”
