Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him,

"Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples." He said to them, "When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive

everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test." And he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight

and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey

and I have nothing to offer him,' and he says in reply from within, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked

and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.' I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of their friendship,

he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. "And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find;

knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds;

and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish?

Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children,

how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"

Fr. Victor’s Trip to México The parish where I am staying is called Sagrada Familia de Nazaret located in Zapopan. It’s a humble parish lo-cated outside the city of Guadalajara. So far my schedule is to do mass and confessions everyday, baptisms every weekend, along with tutoring and classes. The best part are the fiestas. Every now and then we go to a house for a meal or celebration. This is a picture of the three of us at a birthday party for a mom and her son. The family was so nice and a lot of fun, and there’s always a lot of food. It was a joy to see a family so happy together. I learn much more being with them than reading and studying textbooks. It’s been one thing learning how to be a priest, but it’s another to do it in an unfamiliar language. Fortunately, the people here have been both kind and patient with me doing both and I am truly grateful to them for helping to form me in my priesthood of Jesus Christ. Fr. Victor

Thank you.

This is my last week at the Cathedral and soon I will return to the Seminary. There are no words to describe how much I appreciate my time being here. I would like to thank Father Joseph, Father Prospero, Father Victor, the staff, and all the parishioners here for such a warm welcome. Thank you for walking with me, guiding me, feeding me, supporting me, and helping me at my very first parish assign-ment. You have filled my heart with such great joy. I am offering this novena of holy hour and rosary each day for 9 days for our community. I will remember our community in my prayers back in the seminary. Please keep me and all the seminarians in your pray-ers as well. Remember that Our Blessed Mother always knows what we need, and she will do everything in her capacity to help us, just like the Wedding at Cana. She is walking with us every step of the way and guiding us directly to Jesus. Duy Nguyen

Treasures from our Tradition The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reached its high point this week at the feast of the Apostle, with tens of thousands of pilgrims on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is docu-mented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a re-minder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life’s hills and valleys.

The disciples notice Jesus praying “in a certain place.” They ask him to teach them to pray just as John the Baptist had taught his disciples. Jesus teaches them a simple version of the most famous Christian pray-er, the Our Father, or the Lord's Prayer.

Matthew's version shows signs of being shaped by pub-lic prayer. Luke's version is probably closer to the origi-nal form that Jesus taught. Stripped of much of the lan-guage we are used to, Luke's version seems simple and direct. We pray that God's name will be recognized as holy and that his rule over all will be established. This is followed by petitions for our needs for bread, for for-giveness, and for deliverance. Luke uses the more theo-logical language of “sins” rather than “debts,” which is used in Matthew's version. Having taught his disciples a simple, daily prayer, Jesus goes on to reassure them that God answers prayers. First he tells a parable about a persistent neighbor who asks a friend for bread at mid-night. The friend is already in bed and has no desire to disturb his family by opening the door. But because the neighbor is persistent, the sleeping man gets up and gives him all that he needs. If a neighbor is willing to help us if we are persistent enough, how could God not respond to our requests? This teaching concludes with the reminder that if we seek, we will get a response. If a human father, with all his faults, knows how to give good gifts to his children, how much more will our heavenly Father give us? Instead of good gifts, however, Luke substitutes the word Holy Spirit. This foreshadows the gift of the Holy Spirit, who is central to Luke's theol-ogy and who will play an important role in the growth of the early Church after Pentecost. The parable and the concluding teaching in this section should not lead us to think of prayer as a series of re-quests presented to God. Rather, as Jesus teaches in his model prayer, prayer consists in recognizing God's holi-ness and his rule over all things. Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Blessed Stanley Rother March 27, 1935 - July 28, 1981 On May 25, 1963, Stanley Roth-

er, a farmer from Okarche, Oklahoma, was ordained for his home diocese of Oklahoma City-Tulsa. Having flunked out of the area seminary due to his diffi-culty with Latin, Fr. Rother attended Mount St. Mary Seminary in Maryland, where he finished his studies and was ordained. After serving five years, Fr. Rother joined five priests, three reli-gious sisters, and three laypersons to staff a Guatemalan mission in Santiago Atitlán serving the Tz’utujil people. They felt the call of John Paul II to minister in foreign lands and with their bishop’s approval, left behind the comforts of the United States. By 1975, Fr. Rother was alone there, the others having left for various reasons. He served the Tz’utujil people for 13 years and won their hearts and souls. Ever the farmer, and always unpretentious and mild-mannered, Fr. Rother experimented with various

crops as well as fulfilling his pastoral duties. Guatemala’s civil war reached the highlands and Lake Atitlán by 1980. Government troops camped on the parish farm and Fr. Rother witnessed the assassination of a number of his pa-rishioners, including the parish deacon. Warned of immi-nent danger, Fr. Rother returned to the United States for three months early in 1981 to visit with his family and friends. Against their advice and that of the bishop, Fr. Rother returned to Atitlán to be with his people. He re-membered a Sisters’ community who had fled the country and later tried to return but the peo-ple asked, “Where were you when we needed you?” On the evening of July 28, three masked men entered the rectory and shot Fr. Rother to death. His beloved parishioners mourned him repeatedly crying, “They have killed our priest.” Pope Francis declared Stanley Rother a martyr on Decem-ber 2, 2016. He was beatified in Oklahoma City September 23, 2017.
