DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS/ FALL FESTIVAL

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Edison community is already hard at work organizing Edison’s annual Fall Festival/Día de los Muertos, to be held on Saturday afternoon, November 7th from 1:00-5:00 p.m. It has elements of many school fall carnivals (games for children, inflatables, face painting, a haunted house, etc), but it is also so much more. As a Spanish-English dual immersion school, Edison focuses on the cultures of the Americas. We learn about each other’s cultures in an open and respectful environment and often find that there are many values and practices we hold in common. For example, nearly all cultures have some ways that they honor or remember the dearly departed. So at the Edison Fall Festival, we include a look at the Days of the Dead observed in Mexico, Central America and parts of South America on Nov. 1 and Nov.2.

At the Festival, the cafetorium will be transformed into a solemn series of classroom “altars” that contain items that help us remember our departed. The altars may include pictures of departed loved ones (including pets), flowers, artwork, water, candles, favorite foods and drink, fruit, papel picado (tissue paper cutouts), etc. The items on the tables are known as “ofrendas” or offerings – helping us remember some of the things that our departed loved the most in their time on earth. The traditional belief is that the spirits of the departed come back to visit during the Days of the Dead. However, this is not a scary holiday in the way of Halloween, but rather a quiet time of remembrance. Accompanying the altars is a large carpet or “alfombra” made of colored sawdust, rice, beans, and sometimes fruit – making an intricate but very temporary work of art on the ground in the tradition of the mandalas. On the entertainment stage there will be a student Mariachi and other live Latin Music, Ballet Folklorico, Aztec Dancers, and Flamenco Dancers, and a third-grade theater presentation. To tempt you In the food pavilions you’ll find tamales, tacos, pupusas, aguas frescas, and Asian food in addition to pizza and delicious deserts. And among the arts and crafts you’ll find an opportunity to decorate sugar skulls. Come and join us for this uniquely Edison festival! .

Student Investigations for Hispanic/ Latino Heritage Month – There is still time to turn in student submissions for the “Did You Know?” /Wall of Knowledge bulletin on Hispanic/Latino Heritage. National PTA Reflections Program – invites students to make art responding to the theme LET YOUR IMMAGINATION FLY! PTA Volunteers will be offering some workshops at lunchtime to encourage students to participate in making art.

Attention Kinder Parents! -- Would

you like to help plan a fun event for our Edison community? If so, join the 2015-16 Kinder Committee and help plan the next Movie Night for the Spring! It is a great way to meet new people and to serve your volunteer hours for the Edison community. Attention Challenges and Children: A Parent Workshop. Edison families are

invited to a workshop on attention challenges that elementary school aged children typically face. Parents will be provided strategies that can help to improve their child’s attention and focus in school and home. Parents will also be provided with an overview of UCLA School Function Services at Edison and how these services can help with their child’s learning needs. Wednesday, October 14, 6:30-8:00 p.m. in Room 100 at Edison.

Sibling Attending Kinder in 2016-2017? – See Yoly right away for an application for your younger child. A completed application is due by November 13 in order to receive a sibling priority. Fall Raffle – Tickets are on sale now for Edison’s Fall Raffle. 1st prize is $1,000 cash. 2nd prize is an Electra 7D Beach Cruiser. 3rd prize is $250 cash. An initial packet of tickets went home last week. If you need more, see the office.

La comunidad de Edison ya está trabajando duro organizando el Festival de Otoño/Día de los Muertos anual de Edison, que se llevará a cabo el sábado 7 de noviembre de 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Tiene elementos de muchos carnavales escolares de otoño (juegos para niños, inflables, pinturas de caras, casa de espantos, etc), pero también mucho más. Cómo escuela de doble inmersión de español – inglés, Edison se enfoca en las culturas de las Américas. Aprendemos sobre las culturas de cada quien en un ambiente abierto y respetoso y frecuentemente encontramos que hay muchos valores y prácticas que tenemos en común. Por ejemplo, casi todas las culturas tienen alguna manera de honrar o recordar a los seres queridos fallecidos. Entonces en el Festival de Otoño de Edison, incluimos una miríada a los Días de los Muertos observados en México, Centro América y partes de América del Sur el 1 y 2 de noviembre. En el Festival, la cafetería se transformará en una serie solemne de “altares” de salones que contienen cosas que nos ayudan a recordar a nuestros fallecidos. En el escenario de entretenimiento tendremos Mariachi

estudiantil y otra Música Latina en vivo, Ballet Folclórico, Danzantes

Aztecas, y Danzantes de Flamenco, y una presentación de teatro. Para

provocarlos en los puestos de comida encontrarán tamales, tacos,

pupusas, aguas frescas, y comida asiática en adición a pizza y postres

deliciosos. Y entre las artesanías y manualidades encontrarán una

oportunidad de decorar calaveras de azúcar. ¡Vengan y acompáñenos

para este Festival único a Edison!

Investigaciones Estudiantiles para el Mes de Herencia Hispana/Latina - Todavía hay tiempo para que los estudiantes entreguen sus investigaciones para el boletín “¿Sabías Que?/Pared de Conocimiento” sobre Herencia Hispana/Latina.

Programa Nacional de PTA de Reflexiones – invita a los estudiantes hacer arte respondiendo al tema ¡DEJA QUE TU IMAGINACION VUELE! Voluntarios de la PTA estarán ofreciendo unos talleres en la hora del almuerzo para animar a los estudiantes a participar en hacer arte.

¡Atención Padres de Kindergarten! – ¿Les gustaría ayudar a planear un evento divertido para nuestra comunidad de Edison? Entonces únanse al Comité de Kinder del 2015 – 2016 y ayuden a planear la siguiente Noche de Películas Familiares para la primavera! Retos de Atención y los Niños: Un Taller de Padres. Las familias de Edison son invitadas a un taller sobre retos de atención que los niños de edad escolar típicamente enfrentan. A los padres se les proveerán estrategias que les pueden ayudar a mejorar la atención y enfoque en la escuela y en el hogar. A los padres también se les proveerá un resumen de los Servicios de Funciones Escolares de UCLA en Edison y cómo estos servicios pueden ayudar con las necesidades de aprendizaje de su hijo/a. El miércoles, 14 de octubre, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. en el salón 100 en Edison.

¿Hermanitos Asistiendo a Kindergarten en el 2016 – 2017? – Hablen con Yoly inmediatamente para conseguir una solicitud para su hijo/a menor. Una solicitud completa debe ser entregada a más tardar el 13 de noviembre para recibir la prioridad de hermanitos.

Dear Families:

It is already time for us to make plans for next year’s enrollment! We need to know if you have another child that

you plan to enroll in kindergarten at Edison for the school year 2016-2017. While it is our policy to give an enrollment

priority to siblings of students currently enrolled at Edison, you must submit an application by November 13, 2015 to take

advantage of this priority. After that time, we cannot guarantee a space for your child and your application will be placed

in the general pool. Please keep in mind that while we give priority to siblings of students and graduates of Edison, we

also evaluate all applications individually to determine whether the dual immersion program is a good fit for the particular

needs of each child and we do language screening to determine whether your child would be counted as an English

speaker or Spanish speaker.

If you have a child who will start Kindergarten next year, complete and return the tear-off below as soon as

possible and we will send you an application.

Kindergarteners for the 2016-2017 school year must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2016. If you have a

child currently attending Edison, you do not need to attend a school orientation/tour. However, read the enrollment packet

carefully because some policies, especially regarding inter-district permits, may have changed since you enrolled your last

child. If you are attending Edison on a permit from LAUSD, the inter-district permit application window is usually from

March 1 to April 30 and you must apply on line. We will give you an invitation to enroll letter before that time. LAUSD

is very strict about their permit application deadlines, so if you need an inter-district permit, pay attention to the deadlines.

If you live outside SMMUSD but NOT in LAUSD, please contact your home school district to check their deadlines and

Estimadas Familias:

Ya es tiempo de hacer planes para la registración del próximo año. Necesitamos saber si ustedes tienen otro

niño/a que ustedes planea registrar en Kindergarten en Edison para el año escolar 2016-2017. Aunque es nuestra póliza

darles prioridad a los hermanos de estudiantes que están asistiendo a Edison, ustedes debe entregar una solicitud antes del

13 de noviembre, 2015 para tomar ventaja de esta prioridad. Después de ese tiempo, no podemos garantizar un espacio

para su hijo/a y su solicitud será puesta en una lista general. Por favor tenga en mente que aunque les damos la prioridad a

los hermanitos de los alumnos y graduados de Edison, también evaluamos a todas las solicitudes individualmente para

Fall Festival / Dia de los muertos

Dear Parents,

Each year Edison’s Fall Festival includes an exhibition for Día de Los Muertos – a cultural tradition in

Mexico and Latin America that dates from pre-Columbian times. As a part of our studies of different

cultures, each classroom usually prepares a display that honors the people who are important to the

children in that classroom. Please remember that Edison is a public elementary school so we can not

display any religious symbols in our altar display. Please contact your teacher about any ideas he/she

may have about planning for your class altar. This year the Fall Festival will be held on Saturday,

November 7th, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Each class will set up their altar during the morning of

Friday, November 6th.

Information about Día de los Muertos:

The observance of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) dates from pre-Columbian times. On November 1 and

2, ceremonies and festivities honor those who have passed. It is believed that on this day, those who have died

are allowed to return to earth to visit with their family and friends and so it is not a somber occasion, but a day

of celebration and remembrance. November 1, All Saints Day, is devoted to children who have died, while

November 2 to adults.

In Mexico, Día de Los Muertos is celebrated by cleaning and decorating loved one’s graves, creating colorful

flower wreaths of cempazuchil, making sugar skulls and, most important, by setting up altars with pictures,

candles, flowers, food and drinks for those who have died.

Special dishes, such as tamales, are cooked for the ofrendas, or offerings. Friends and relatives are invited into

homes to eat, reminisce about those who have died.

There are Six Basic Elements to an Altar:

* Photos of the departed loved one.

* Food and drink that the departed ones especially enjoyed in life. The spirits, it is said, cannot eat but they can

absorb the essence. It is customary to place baked bread called Pan de Muertos on the altar.

* Flowers are essential for an altar. The custom is to place large bouquets of orange cempazuchitl, marigolds, in

vases and scattered throughout the altar. The flowers’ pungent scent and bright color is said to help souls find

their way home.

* Candles of various shapes and sizes are also added to the altar.

* Copal Incense, which the Aztecs used in many ceremonies, is also placed on the altar.

* Favorite items such as toys, jewelry or clothing of the deceased might also be placed on the altar.

Fall Festival / Dia de los muertos

Estimados Padres de Familia,

Cada año el Festival de Otoño de Edison incluye una exhibición para el Día de los Muertos – una

tradición cultural en México y América Latina que tiene sus orígenes en tiempos pre-Colombinos. Como

parte de nuestros estudios de diferentes culturas, generalmente cada clase prepara una ofrenda para

honrar a las personas que han sido importantes a los alumnos. Ejemplos de ofrendas pueden ser

calaveras de azúcar, flores, retratos del la persona, velas simples sin símbolo religioso. Por favor de

recordar que Edison es una escuela pública y no podemos manifestar ninguna religión por eso se les pide

que sus ofrendas no tengan símbolos religiosos. Puede empezar a hablar con su Maestra/o acerca del

altar de su salón y pregunte como puede ayudarle a organizar el altar. El Festival de Otoño se llevará

acabo el Sábado, 7 de Noviembre de las 1:00 PM a las 5:00 PM. Cada clase va organizar su altar durante

la mañana de el Viernes, 6 de Noviembre.

Información acerca del Día de los Muertos:

La celebración del Día de los Muertos tiene sus orígenes desde la época pre-colombina. El 1 y 2 de noviembre,

se celebran fiestas para honrar a todos los que han muerto. Se cree que en estas fechas regresan los muertos a la

tierra a visitar a sus amistades y familiares, por lo tanto no es una ocasión sombría sino una celebración de la

vida de nuestros seres queridos que han fallecido. El 1 de noviembre, el Día de todos Los Santos, se le dedica a

los niños que han muerto, mientras que el 2 de noviembre a los adultos.

En México se celebra visitando los cementerios y limpiando y decorando las tumbas de los muertos. Se hacen

coloridas coronas de cempazuchitl, calaveras de azúcar y se ponen altares con fotografías, velas, flores, comida

y bebida dedicadas a los muertos. Se preparan platillos especiales como ofrendas, como por ejemplo, tamales

de mole negro. Se invita a los amigos y los familiares a comer para recordar a los seres queridos que han

muerto.

Existen Seis Elementos Básicos Para Poner Un Altar:

* Poner las fotografías de los muertos.

* Poner la comida y bebida que disfrutaban en vida los muertos. Los espíritus no pueden comer, pero pueden

absorber la esencia de la comida. También se acostumbra colocar una rosca llamada Pan de Muertos en el altar.

* Las flores son esenciales en los altares. La costumbre es poner en floreros repartidos por todo el altar grandes

ramos de flores color naranja llamadas cempazuchitl. Se dice que el fuerte olor y el colorido de las flores ayuda

a las almas a encontrar su camino al hogar.

* Asimismo, se ponen en el altar velas y veladoras de todos tipos y tamaños.

* El incienso de copal, el cual usaban los aztecas en varias de sus ceremonias, también se pone en el altar.

* Otras cosas como las pertenencias favoritas de los muertos como ropa, joyas, o juguetes pueden también

ponerse en el altar.
