I. INFORMACIÓN GENERAL DEL CURSO

A. Descripción del curso

El enfoque de este curso es presentar al estudiante la importancia del rol profesional de la

enfermería en la comunidad contemporánea. Enfatiza en los conceptos básicos de

enfermería, salud y enfermedad, y en los componentes emocional, espiritual, psicológico y

fisiológico del ser humano. El estudiante participa de procedimientos básicos de enfermería,

además de tener la oportunidad de familiarizarse con diversos instrumentos y equipo de

laboratorio de destrezas de enfermería. También es guiado a través de una serie de

actividades que lo exponen a la vida universitaria, incluyendo el aspecto cultural y la vida de

un profesional de enfermería.

B. Objetivos generales de contenido

Al finalizar el curso, el estudiante será capaz de:

1. Discutir las consideraciones éticas y legales en enfermería.

2. Identificar y analizar las teorías de enfermería y la práctica profesional dentro del

marco conceptual del Programa de BSN de la Universidad del Turabo.

3. Reflexionar sobre los valores, creencias y cuidados en la enfermería profesional.

4. Identificar las estrategias para responder exámenes estandarizados.

5. Reconocer y examinar los diversos componentes de la terminología médica usada en

enfermería.



C. Objetivos de lenguaje

Al finalizar el curso, el estudiante será capaz de:

1. Comprender discursos orales, en inglés/español, a partir de los estímulos auditivos

que se presenten en el curso tales como vídeos, presentaciones audiovisuales y otras

actividades interactivas.

2. Expresar ideas con propiedad y corrección, tanto en inglés como en español, de

manera que desarrolle al máximo sus destrezas de comunicación oral y aplique sus

conocimientos sobre el curso a su área de especialidad y la vida cotidiana.

3. Investigar los datos que recopile, de los diversos recursos de la clase, tanto en inglés

como en español, de manera que se beneficie autónomamente de la lectura como

fuente de información y enriquecimiento cultural.

4. Emplear los principios de la gramática y ortografía española/inglesa desde una

postura personal, crítica, analítica y creativa de manera que provea datos pertinentes

relacionados con los temas del curso.

Créditos: Uno

Duración: Cinco semanas (tres horas por semana)

Prerrequisito: QYLE 110-0



E. Reglas de administración del curso

1. Como requisitos específicos de los cursos del programa de enfermería, el estudiante

deberá prepararse de manera que cumpla con las actividades y lecturas, según se

asignen en cada taller. Recuerde, se requiere un mínimo de 10 horas semanales de

preparación previas a cada taller. La identificación y atención temprana de las áreas

de oportunidad de mejora y el tiempo de estudio que requiere cada curso son

esenciales para el éxito en la carrera de enfermería.

2. El estudiante debe realizar todas las actividades antes del taller utilizando el

contenido, la terminología y los procesos adecuados relacionados a los temas del

taller. Estas actividades serán evaluadas utilizando la rúbrica correspondiente

que mide el dominio del contenido y la competencia lingüística del estudiante. El

estudiante repasará con el facilitador, durante el Taller Uno, las rúbricas para evaluar

la participación en el taller, trabajos escritos, y presentaciones orales y audiovisuales

se encuentran en la sección de Course Guide en la parte izquierda de su curso

(Course Menu) de la plataforma de Blackboard. Dichas rúbricas se utilizarán para

evaluar evaluar el 70 % de contenido de las actividades realizadas a lo largo del curso

y para evaluar el 30 % de la calificación en las áreas de lenguaje, según estipula

nuestro modelo bilingüe.

3. Participará activamente en las actividades de simulación diseñadas para el curso de

manera que desarrolle las destrezas que necesita para desempeñar las funciones y

procesos de enfermería.



4. Colocará semanalmente en el Digital Performance Portfolio, todos los trabajos que

realizó y que el facilitador evaluó, junto a sus respectivas rúbricas bajo la carpeta de

la semana y la actividad que corresponda. Esto incluye, pero no se limita a, los

borradores originales de los trabajos escritos, evidencia de la retroalimentación

brindada por la herramienta NetTutor y los escritos revisados. Recuerde que el

Digital Performance Portfolio forma parte de los criterios de evaluación del curso.

5. Tomará una foto capturando la imagen de la pantalla (screenshot) de los resultados

obtenidos en cada una de las pruebas EAQ Mastery Quizzing –las respuestas a las

preguntas del repaso comprensivo de Saunders Comprehensive Review for the

NCLEX-RN Examination (Silvestri, 2014) y las actividades de análisis de estudios de

casos realizados a lo largo del curso. Guardará la imagen en un documento digital

destinado para la clase.

6. Completará y enviará todos los trabajos del curso en la fecha de vencimiento

asignada. Las asignaciones enviadas después de las 24 horas posteriores a la

fecha de vencimiento recibirán una calificación de cero. Se permitirá un examen

/ prueba de reposición y se debe programar dentro de las 24 horas. El facilitador

se reserva el derecho de usar un formato diferente para un examen de

reposición.

7. Para aprobar el curso el estudiante debe obtener una califación de A o B en el mismo.

De obtener menos de 80% en la nota final, el estudiante deberá repetir el curso.

8. Todos los cursos de enfermería de pre-requisito deben completarse satisfactoriamente

antes de matricularse en el próximo curso de enfermería en la secuencia.



9. Deberá referirse a la Guía del curso para el estudiante que se encuentra en la sección

de Course Menu de Blackboard (al lado izquierdo de la pantalla) bajo el enlace

llamado Course Guide para obtener información adicional sobre las normas y

políticas del curso. La Guía del curso del estudiante se discutirá durante el primer día

de clases.

10. Evaluación

La calificación final está basada en la acumulación de puntos por taller (30 % para idioma

y 70 % para conocimientos en la disciplina). Calcule la calificación final basada en los

criterios que aparecen al lado izquierdo de la tabla (la calificación final representa 50 %

para el idioma español y 50 % para el idioma inglés).

I. GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION

A. Course description

This course focuses on presenting students the important role nursing professionals play

in our society. Emphasis is given to basic concepts of nursing, health, and illness; as well

as the emotional, spiritual, psychological, and physiological components of the human

being. Students participate on basic nursing procedures, and familiarize with a variety of

instruments and equipment at the Nursing Skills laboratory. They are also exposed to

university life activities, including the cultural aspect and life of a professional nurse.

B. Content Objectives

Upon completing this course, the student will be able to

1. Discuss the ethical and legal considerations in nursing along with significant historical

events and contributions of a selected number of nursing theorists.

2. Acknowledge and examine the nursing theories and professional practices of the UT

BSN Program’s theoretical framework.

3. Self-reflect on values, beliefs and care in the nursing profession.

4. Identify the test-taking strategies to resolve standardized tests.

5. Acknowledge and examine the multiple components of the medical terminology used

in nursing.



C. Language Objectives

Upon completing this course, the student will be able to

1. Comprehend oral discussions in English/Spanish based on auditory stimuli

presented during the course such as videos, audiovisual presentations, and

interactive activities.

2. Express him/herself in English/Spanish correctly and coherently, to fully develop

his/her oral communication skills and apply knowledge of the course to his/her

area of specialty and everyday life.

3. Investigate information obtained from the different course resources, in

English/Spanish, in order to benefit from reading as a source of information and

cultural enrichment.

4. Apply correct grammar and principles of writing in English/Spanish when

expressing a personal, critical, and creative point of view, to provide information

related to the course.

Course name: Introduction to Nursing: A New Community

Code: NURS 200

Credits: One

Duration: Five weeks (three hours per week)

Prerequisite: QYLE 110-0



E. Course Management Rules

The students will comply with the following specific requirements

1. The student must be prepared in such a way that it complies with the activities

and readings, as assigned in each workshop. A minimum of 10 hours of

preparation is required for each workshop. The identification and early attention

to the challenge areas and the study time required by each course are essential for

success in the nursing career.

2. The student must complete all activities before the workshop applying the

content, terminology, and appropriate processes related to the topics of the

workshop. These activities will be evaluated using a rubric that measures the

student’s content mastery and linguistic proficiency. The student will review

with the facilitator, during Workshop One, the rubrics to evaluate: the

participation in the workshop, written works, and oral and audiovisual

presentations. Said rubrics are found in the Course Guide section on the left side

of their course (Course Menu) in the Blackboard platform. These rubrics will be

used for the evaluation of the 70% of the content in the activities carried out

throughout the course and to evaluate 30% of the grade in the language areas, as

stipulated in our bilingual model.

3. Place all the evaluated activities of the course, with their respective rubrics, in the

corresponding folder of the workshops of the Digital Performance Portfolio. This

includes, but not limited to, the original drafts of written works, evidence of the

feedback provided by the NetTutor tool, and the revised versions of said written



work. Remember that the Digital Performance Portfolio is part of the evaluation

criteria for the course.

4. Students must take a screenshot of the results obtained in each of the EAQ

Mastery Quizzing tests - (Silvestri, 2014) review questions, and the case study

analyses completed through the course. Each image must be properly saved in a

digital document specified for the class.

5. Complete and submit all course work on the assigned due date. Assignments

submitted after 24 hours of the due date will receive a zero grade.

6. To pass the course, the student must achieve a grade of A or B in the course. A

failing grade of less than 80% requires that the course be repeated.

7. Refer to the Student’s Course Guide, which can be found under the Course Guide

section to the left side of the Course Menu in Blackboard for additional details

regarding course policies and rules. The facilitator will discuss the Student’s

Course Guide during Workshop One.

The final grade is based on the total points by workshop (30% for languages and 70% for

the content area.) Average the final grade based on the criteria that appears to the left of

the chart (the final grade represents 50% for the Spanish language and 50% for the English

language.)

A. Objetivos de contenido

Al completar el taller, el estudiante será capaz de:

1. Definir conceptos básicos de enfermería.

2. Establecer las diferencias entre las funciones y roles de la profesión de enfermería.

3. Describir los eventos históricos en la evolución de la enfermería.

4. Conocer las diferentes teorías directamente aplicables a la profesión de

enfermería.

5. Identificar las teorías aplicables a la profesión que no provienen del campo de la

enfermería.

6. Señalar los criterios profesionales que corresponden a la carrera de enfermería.

7. Discutir los estándares que rigen la profesión y las prácticas más comunes entre

los enfermeros.

8. Describir el proceso de transformación y socialización del profesional de la

enfermería.

9. Explicar los niveles de preparación académica en enfermería, y contrastar las

diversas responsabilidades dependiendo del nivel educativo.

10. Identificar la variedad de certificaciones dentro de la carrera, así como las

D. Actividades antes del taller

1. Utilice la Biblioteca Virtual y los recursos académicos del E-Lab, como libros

electrónicos, para que lea los capítulos 1 y 2 del libro de Yoost & Crawford

(2015) sobre los fundamentos básicos de la enfermería y valores y creencias.

Prepare un documento escrito donde incluya las definiciones de los siguientes

términos: enfermero registrado de práctica avanzada (APRN, por sus siglas en

inglés), colaboración, marco conceptual, competencia cultural, disciplina,

metaparadigma, teoría de alcance intermedio, ética, prácticas basadas en la

evidencia (EBP por sus siglas en inglés), holismo, licencia y socialización.

Coloque el documento en el área de asignaciones en Blackboard, creado por el

facilitador. Llegue preparado a clase para que abunde al respecto.



2. Diseñe un diagrama de burbujas en el que ilustre las responsabilidades

primordiales y los roles de un profesional de la enfermería, enfatizando en el

modo correcto de cuidado del paciente, su rol como educador, líder, portavoz de

la salud, colaborador e investigador. Suba el documento en el área de

asignaciones creada por el facilitador, utilizando la herramienta de Blackboard.

Prepárese para que participe en una actividad colaborativa en clase.

3. Prepare una lista de los criterios profesionales que corresponden a la carrera de

enfermería. Incluya los estándares que rigen a la profesión y las prácticas más

comunes, los niveles de preparación académica en enfermería y las

responsabilidades de acuerdo al nivel. Imprímala y llévela a clase.

4. Tome notas sobre el proceso de transformación y socialización del profesional de

enfermería y prepárese para describirlo en clase.

5. Utilizando la Biblioteca Virtual o visitando el Centro de Recursos del Aprendizaje

de su campus, investigue sobre la Jerarquía de Maslow acerca de la teoría de

necesidades. Redacte un ensayo de dos páginas en donde se describan sus

componentes, la aplicación y cómo se organizan las intervenciones que realizan

los profesionales de la enfermería con sus pacientes. El ensayo se entregará antes

del Taller Uno a través de Blackboard. Asegúrese de redactar según APA, incluya

las citas y referencias y envíelo a NetTutor para recibir retroalimentación. El

facilitador enviará los trabajos escritos a SafeAssignTM para detectar casos de

plagio. Envíe su escrito al facilitador vía Blackboard. Imprima una copia y llegue

preparado a clase para que abunde al respecto en clase. El facilitador evaluará esta



actividad con la Rúbrica de redacción (Apéndice B); déjese llevar por las guías de

redacción (Apéndice E).

6. Investigue sobre el modelo Novato a Experto (Novice to Expert) de Benner. El

estudiante creará una tabla que detalle los niveles definidos por el modelo, e

identifique cómo el modelo se aplica a la práctica profesional de la enfermería

contemporánea. Añada un resumen breve de las proyecciones futuras de la

enfermería como profesión. Coloque el documento en el área correspondiente en

Blackboard, designado por el facilitador. Llegue preparado a clase para que

abunde al respecto.

7. En la sección de Referencias Específicas del Taller, el estudiante deberá acceder

al enlace The Essential of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing

Practice y leer las nueve reglas/elementos esenciales de la práctica de la

enfermería. Redacte un resumen detallado de todas las reglas y su importancia y

lleve a clase para discusión.

8. Lea el capítulo 2 del libro de texto de Black (2013) y resuma la historia de la

profesión de la enfermería en una línea de tiempo. Lleve la misma a clase para

discusión.

9. Investigue sobre las siguientes organizaciones profesionales de enfermería: ANA,

NLN, ICN, NSNA, y Sigma Theta Tau y sobre la variedad de certificaciones en la

carrera de enfermería. Llegue preparado a clase para que abunde al respecto.

10. Vaya a Rosetta Stone Advantage y comience a trabajar los ejercicios que se han

diseñado para que desarrolle sus destrezas lingüísticas en español. Concentre sus

esfuerzos en ejercicios de vocabulario y de pronunciación del área de enfermería.



11. Empiece a preparar el portafolio digital; siga las instrucciones estipuladas en el

Digital Performance Portfolio Assessment Handbook que se encuentra en

Blackboard.

E. Actividades durante el taller

1. El facilitador hará una presentación en PowerPoint donde explicará la definición

académica de la enfermería, las características de colaboración, los roles y

funciones primordiales del profesional de la enfermería, su historia, las diversas

teorías aplicables, guías prácticas de ejecución, grados académicos,

organizaciones profesionales de enfermería y las metas nacionales de salud del

paciente.

2. Los estudiantes intercambiarán el documento con las definiciones y las leerán.

Luego dialogarán entre ellos sobre los términos y su importancia. Luego el

facilitador discutirá el vocabulario técnico de la disciplina junto a los estudiantes,

practicará la pronunciación con los estudiantes y aclarará dudas con los conceptos

y definiciones.

3. Los estudiantes se reunirán en grupos de tres, y utilizando los diagramas de

burbujas y la lista criterios, estándares, y prácticas creados como actividad antes

del taller, discutirán la importancia de los mismos para el profesional de

enfermería.

4. La clase completa discutirá el proceso de transformación y de socialización del

profesional de enfermería. El facilitador dirigirá y aportará a la discusión.



5. Los estudiantes utilizarán sus ensayos para participar activamente en la discusión

de la Jerarquía de Maslow sobre la Teoría de Necesidades, a la vez que proveerán

ejemplos de su aplicación en el campo de la enfermería.

6. El facilitador dividirá la clase en grupos de tres donde los estudiantes utilizarán las

tablas creadas para discutir el modelo Novato a Experto (Novice to Expert) de

Benner con énfasis en su aplicación a la práctica de la enfermería. Una vez cada

grupo independiente genere los puntos de discusión, se incorporarán los

comentarios de cada grupo a toda la clase. El facilitador evaluará esta actividad

con la rúbrica de participación en clase (Apéndice C) y la de destrezas de

comunicación oral (Apéndice A) y la Rúbrica de redacción (Apéndice B).

7. Los estudiantes presentarán su resumen sobre los nueve elementos/reglas

esenciales en la práctica de la enfermería, y utilizarán la línea de tiempo creada

como actividad antes del taller para hacer una descripción sobre la historia del

profesional de enfermería, la visión y la misión de las organizaciones

profesionales en el campo y las certificaciones dentro de la carrera.

8. El facilitador administrará una prueba corta estandarizada basada en los temas

relacionados al taller 1.

A. Content objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, the student will be able to

1. Describe the differences between beliefs and values and how they are developed.

2. Explain the values clarification process while dealing with a situation involving a

conflict of values.

3. Summarize how the nurse’s beliefs, and those of the patient, influence the health

service provided.

4. Define the main concepts of the four theories of caregiving in Nursing.

1. Read chapters 2 and 27 of the book of Yoost & Crawford (2015). Take notes and

compose a detailed summary. Apply all professional academic language related

to the field of nursing you have learned during the first two workshops. The

facilitator will evaluate this activity using the Appendix B: Written

Communication Skills Rubric and will send written works to SafeAssignTM

to

check for plagiarism. Upload to the designated area in Blackboard. Print a copy

and bring to class.

2. Create a table with in Word. The first column will have the definitions of the

following concepts: beliefs, care, codependence, first-order beliefs,



generalizations, high-order beliefs, paradigms, prejudices, stereotypes, values,

value clarification, conflict, value system, daily-life activities, alopecia,

gingivitis, earwax, Sitz baths, prosthesis, armpit, perineal care and mastication.

The second column of the table will have one or two written sentences applying

the concept. Print and bring to class for discussion.

3. Summarize in two paragraphs how the nurse’s and the customer’s beliefs

influence the health service provided. Include an explanation of the difference

between beliefs and values and how they are developed.

4. Prepare an outline explaining the values clarification process while dealing with

a values conflict. Print it and bring to class for discussion.

5. On chapter 27 of Yoost and Crawford (2015), carefully read the topics of proper

hygiene, alterations, the hygienic state of a patient, and the implementation of

care plans and interventions designed to improve patient hygiene needs. Take

notes and bring them to class.

6. Go to the oral discussion created by the facilitator in Blackboard using the

VoiceThread tool and discuss the protocols employed when requiring an

interpreter when the patient does not speak the language of the healthcare

provider. Afterwards, react verbally to the comments of at least three colleagues

with meaningful feedback. The facilitator will evaluate this activity using the

Oral Communication Skills Rubric (Appendix A).

7. Using the Virtual Library or the Learning Resources Center of your campus,

research on the caregiving theories in nursing, including Madeleine Leininger,

Jean Watson, Joyce Travelbee, and Kristen Swanson. Prepare a two-page written



document with the key aspects of these theories and their definition of

caregiving. Upload to the designated area in Blackboard. The facilitator will

evaluate this activity using the Written Communication Skills Rubric (Appendix

B) and/or the Participation Rubric (Appendix C).

8. Find videos presenting the proper techniques to partially and completely bathe

immobilized patients. Also, find videos on the correct way to lay a bed, while

occupied or unoccupied. Observe them and prepare an outline with the main

points on each video researched and bring it to the workshop. If you can find

these videos, use the recommended textbooks or the Virtual Library to find the

information.

9. Research about the correct oral care technique for patients undergoing

chemotherapy. Take notes and bring the information to the workshop for a

collaborative learning activity.

10. Continue working on the organization and completion of the digital portfolio

following the guidelines stipulated in the Digital Performance Portfolio

Assessment Handbook.

11. Go to Rosetta Stone Advantage and continue working on the interactive

exercises designed to develop/improve linguistic skills in English. Concentrate

your efforts on grammar and syntax exercises.



E. Activities during the workshop

1. The facilitator will begin the class with a short review of the previous

workshop.

2. The facilitator will review, practice, discuss, and clarify the technical

vocabulary of the discipline. Students will use the tables they created as an

activity before the class and will read aloud the sentences where they applied

the concepts (column two). After completing this activity, students will have the

opportunity to clarify doubts as needed on the vocabulary.

3. The facilitator will discuss with a PowerPoint presentation the differences

between beliefs and values and how they are developed and the use of the

process of the clarification of values in the management of conflict of values.

The main concepts of the four theories of nursing care, the importance of

hygiene of the skin, hair, nails and mucosal membranes will also be covered.

Finally, the facilitator will discuss the nursing diagnoses for patients who need

hygiene assistance or are experiencing alterations in self-care skills. Students

will use their detailed summary of chapters 2 and 27 during this activity.

4. Each student will exchange with a classmate their two written paragraphs on

how the nurse and customer beliefs influence of the health service provided.

They will also exchange their outlines explaining the values clarification

process. They will read and analyze them and will provide feedback to the

classmate. A class discussion will follow.



5. The facilitator will divide the class into small groups to discuss the nursing care

theories of Madeleine Leininger, Jean Watson, Joyce Travelbee, and Kristen

Swanson. Students will use the written document on the key aspects of these

theories. A member of each group will take notes and will summarize the

discussion to the rest of the class.

6. Each student will present the videos on the correct technique of providing a

complete and partial bath to immobilized patients, and the proper way to lay a

bed, when occupied and unoccupied. They will use their outlines with the main

points during the discussion.

7. In a roundtable format, students will use their notes to discuss the proper

technique of oral care with patients undergoing chemotherapy. Students will

clarify doubts as needed. The facilitator will provide feedback and will evaluate

this activity using the Participation Rubric (Appendix C).

6. The facilitator will divide the class into groups and will assign examples of

situations that may result in a high risk of being sued for negligence or



malpractice to each group. He will include liability cases such as professional

limits, delegation and documentation problems. Students will dramatize the cases

and will explain how to avoid the situation and possible solutions.

7. The class will discuss the essential components of the Nursing Practice Act,

emphasizing and contrasting the range of practice allowed to nurses and the

sanctions that can result in breaking these limits. They will include their findings

related to state and federal laws effects in the nursing profession. Students will

use the highlighted acts during the discussion.

8. Students will present their bubble charts and the paragraphs summarizing the

types of statutory laws, including intentional or unintentional torts and their

c. Los estudiantes se dividirán en grupos de tres y crearán una presentación

audiovisual donde parearán los siguientes términos médicos con la definición

de los mismos. Deben crear un visual por cada término y discutirlo oralmente:

Términos médicos: adenocarcinoma, cardiomiopatía, esofagitis,

hematoma, hepatomegalia, isquemia, leucocitosis, mieloma, otalgia,

neumonía.

Definiciones: alargamiento del hígado, dolor de oído, depravación de

sangre, condición anormal de las células blancas (elevación), condición

anormal de los pulmones (inflamación y acumulación de material a

menudo causado por bacteria, tumor maligno de la medula ósea,

inflamación del tubo entre la garganta y el estómago, enfermedad del

músculo cardiaco, colección o masa de sangre, tumor cancerígeno del

tejido glandular.

Activities in English

1. The students will meet in pairs to read the following medical case studies

and determine which is the best term that completes the meaning of the

sentences:

a. After a self-examination, Nora felt a small mass in her breast. She

consulted her doctor who asked for an appointment

(mammoplasty, mastectomy, and mammogram). The test showed a

mass in the form of a star and one (biopsy, necropsy, and

laparoscopy) revealed a ductal carcinoma. Nora decided to remove

her breast through a (hysterectomy, mastectomy, and

salpingectomy) although her doctor gave her the option of having a

lumpectomy followed by cryotherapy, thoracotomy, and

radiotherapy.

b. William felt chest pain every time he went up the stairs. He visited

the doctor who performed a (myelogram, angiogram, dialysis),

which revealed (adenocarcinoma, nephrosis, atherosclerosis) in

one of his coronary arteries. The doctor recommended

(angioplasty, thoracentesis, and amniocentesis). This could prevent

more (myosarcoma, ischemia, and leukocytosis) and would help

William avoid a future heart failure (peritoneal, vascular, and

myocardial).



2. The facilitator and the students will discuss the meaning of the prefixes and

abbreviations assigned for this workshop and provide examples of

appropriate medical terminology for prefixes.

3. Students will complete the last three columns of the KWHLAQ Chart on the

topic previously determined by the facilitator in Workshop One and will

share their information. A whole class discussion will follow, including a

question and answer session and a feedback session.

4. Students will write a one-page summary using correct Standard English

explaining how the Language Lab/E-Lab activities contributed to and

benefitted the acquisition, improvement and/or enhancement of their

Spanish and English linguistic skills.

5. The facilitator will administer a quiz based on the content of workshop 5.
