1. a. Torah

Events and laws of the Israelites were recorded in this, their own most sacred text. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, DeuteronomyThe Greeks called it the Pentateuch. The promise of a unique relationship with One, True God to protect and guide them set apart the nation of Israel from the other civilizations of the Fertile Crescent.

SHEMA

God’s statement that He is One God and Only God (monotheism).

Deuteronomy 6:4“Listen, Israel: The LORD our God , the

LORD is One.”

What’s really cool is the next line (v.5): “Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”

Page 4: Numero Uno, Pagina Cuarenta Y Siete,

Then, what’s extra really cool…

The next verses, 6-9, read: “These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

1.b. Abraham

2000 B.C. Lived near Ur in Mesopotamia.Migrated with family and herds of sheep and goats into Canaan (present day Israel).“Founder” of the nation of Israel, according to the textbook; God made covenant with Abraham. The term “Israel,” though, wasn’t used by God until God used “Israel” to re-name Jacob. PATRIARCHS: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.

Hebrew vs. Jew

Hebrew means “wanderer,” and Abram – later called Abraham by God (Genesis 17) – was of a wandering people.Until… God called out Abram (Genesis 12:1-3 (and following). God promised Abram three things. It is the SEED of Abram in the closing of verse three that points us to Jesus! Jesus is the fulfillment of the third promise in the closing of verse two.Further explanation of the covenant is seen in Genesis 15 (numbers of Abram’s descendants and Promised Land described) and 17 (it’s to be Isaac, stupid!). Abram’s attempt to fulfill the covenant on his own is in Genesis 16.A Judahite was a person from the Southern Kingdom; a Judean, as we’ll see in the Babylonian Captivity!

1.c. Moses

Moses led the Israelites in their escape from enslavement in Egypt. The textbook equates escape with exodus.Moses renewed the covenant, Deuteronomy 29.Moses died, THEN the Israelites entered Canaan, the land they believed God had promised them. Book of Joshua. It’s only twenty-some odd chapters where each chapter is only a couple of pages. Read it!We’ll use a full class period next week to read the biblical account of the Exodus (prior to Joshua) in bits and pieces.

1.d. David

After the period of the Judges, God gave the nation of Israel a succession of three kings. These kings were Saul, David, and Solomon. In the same way that the Israelites in their own pride and faithlessness had begged and pleaded with God for a king so that they could be just like all the other peoples of the region, it was Solomon’s leading the nation away from the One, True God that brought upon the people the next era of bondage.

I almost forgot..

1000 B.C. Israel is united under King David.

Wow, what a textbook account of the extension of the bloodline from Abraham to Jesus! A whole sentence!

1.e. Solomon

This guy gets the most press because he was the most worldly! Amazing!FINALLY, Solomon “turned Jerusalem into an impressive capital, with a splendid temple dedicated to God.” (p.45)Solomon won FAME for his wisdom and understanding. 1 Kings 3:16-28 Read it and tell me whose wisdom it was that gave Solomon the ability to execute such a judgment.

Page 11: Numero Uno, Pagina Cuarenta Y Siete,

More Solomon

Tried to increase Israel’s influence by negotiating with powerful empires in Egypt and Mesopotamia. How quickly MAN in his sinful, fallen nature forgets the promise, protection, and provision of the LORD, Our God!Think: the Exodus, the whole book of Joshua, full of true accounts of God’s covenantal character!

Division of the kingdom

Solomon’s high taxes and building projects wrought unrest.Solomon died about 922 B.C.Northern Kingdom retained the name Israel, and the Southern Kingdom was named Judah.Israel was weak in the flesh and so watered down in the purity of their faith that they fell to the Assyrians in 722 B.C. The Assyrians had begun intermarrying the Israelites and casting upon the culture their polytheistic ways.586 B.C. Babylonian armies under Nebuchadnezzar captured Judah. Nebbie K destroyed the Temple and brought the people into EXILE in Babylon. “JEWS”

1.g. Judeo-Christian tradition

The “shared heritage of Jews and Christians” that teaches the “ethical worldview developed by the Israelites.”This ethical worldview requires “moral standards of behavior” such as “personal morality and social justice.” (p.47)The rich and powerful ought to protect the poor and weak. All Mankind is equal before God. Even the ruler of the people must obey God, God’s Law, and the laws of the nation.
