Trick-or-Treat Night

Thursday, October 20th

6:30 - 7:30 pm

Independent Living is welcome to bring their candy to the

Main Dining Room to pass out this year!

Here we are; closing in on the finish line of another year!

If you’re like me, you might feel a little worn out – wondering where the time went, and what is left to be

accomplished.

With the busyness of the Thanksgiving and Christmas season just around the corner, it may be a good time to just

stop and live in the moment, and appreciate it. Just looking around this campus, I see the beautiful fall colors, the

amazing new health center, the awesome residents that call this place home, the dedicated and caring staff that

work here, and I’m more than thankful for the moment!

Valley “Boo” Village will be haunted by cute little goblins this month. Be sure to tell your grandchildren, or great

grandchildren to stop by and trick or treat.

We have our wonderful Taste of Altoona event coming up as well – be sure to come and see what our “house”

looks like this year! I can guarantee you won’t go away hungry.

Just as the seasons change; so do seasons in our life. No matter what season you are in, I hope you can take some

time to stop and appreciate it, and to live in the moment.

As always, thank you for your prayers and support!

Maintenance Requests and Emergencies

If you are experiencing an after hours emergency, please call 265.2571. This is the ONLY number you

should be using for maintenance requests and maintenance emergencies.

If you believe someone is trying to break an entering, please call 911. This will ensure someone will be

here as quickly as possible to assess the situation. It’s better to be safe in these situations.

Please make sure you are locking your cars up at night. We had a situation a few weeks ago regarding

someone rummaging through people’s cars looking for things of value. In these situations, it is

important to file a police report. If you see someone wandering around or looking suspicious, once

again please call 911!

If you are an Independent Living tenant and you have a medical emergency or a fall, you need to call

911. Valley View Village staff is not allowed to pick you up after a fall. If you are worried about your

safety or the safety of a loved one being in Independent Living, please call Shelly Charter at 299.1740

or Alexis Morrison at 299.1731 to discuss our services.

Until we have our new maintenance procedures in place, please continue to file your requests as you

have been. Please avoid stopping maintenance workers to tell them your request. An orange slip needs

to be filled out. Our team will try to get to your request as soon as possible. Please note, we will always

try to repair before we replace. If you would like something replaced for cosmetic purposes, you may

be able to do so at your expense. Any questions regarding this can be directed to Alexis Morrison at

299-1731.

Life in the Village

Inspirational Memories Reprinted with the courtesy of the Des Moines Register,

based on a column written by Daniel P. Finney

John and Lois Neu are residents in our Assisted Living. They have been married almost 74

years. John recently turned 100 years old and Lois is 96. They have four children, two sons and two

daughters, 11 grandchild, and many great-grandchildren.

John and Lois met while they were both serving in the army during World War II. John was a co-pilot

and flew a C-47 Skytrain which transported troops and equipment over France during the Normandy

invasion known as D-Day. During the dangerous mission he feared for his life. As he looked into the

ocean from his plane, he could see allied ships lined up for the invasion. Outside his window, the air

was filled with anti-aircraft flacks and tracer rounds. John and his crew survived the ordeal and he

completed his tour of duty returning to his home of Chicago at the end of the war. Lois served as an

Army nurse in Chicago and France. When she moved to Chicago to study nursing a friend invited her

to the western suburb of Warrenville for the weekend. It was there that she saw John for the first time

at a basketball game. Lois said that he was handsome and had a good head of hair.

After the two fell in love they were married in 1942. John used the “GI Bill” to earn an engineering

degree from Michigan Tech in Houghton, Michigan. The couple later lived in Berkeley, Illinois where

John worked at Ford Aircraft, American Bosh, Hallicrafters, GTE and other companies. During his

younger days John worked as a caddy at the “Chicago Golf Course”. One of the men he caddied for

encouraged him to get a job at Monroe Calculator, which John did repairing adding machines

there. The location of the company was right next to the Chicago Opera House and because of that

John was able to also get a job as a part time usher. His lifetime love of opera began at this time. Years

later one of his daughters said that the loud opera music her father often played throughout the house

was like torture but that all the children developed a love for opera music because of it. From the

Chicago area John and Lois moved to Florida in 1984 where John spent a lot of time golfing.

Due to declining health they decided to move to Des Moines to be closer to their daughter and this is

how they happened to come to Valley View Village. One of the Neu’s grandsons is a West Point

graduate and another, Joseph Anchondo, is a senior at the academy. He wants John to pin his bars on

him when he graduates from West point. John said that he didn’t think he was going to be able to

make it but then again John didn’t think he would survive on that mission over Normandy. He may

however have one more mission in him.

From The Desk Of The Executive Director

Well after a long a wait of delays and required improvements we are finally in the new Health Center. What a

beautiful new home for our residents and future residents. I would like to thank Elim Care Inc., Story

Construction, and the many Sub-Contractors that have put a great deal of work and effort to see a dream come

true. I would especially, want to thank Andrew Centanni the program coordinator for Elim Care Inc. who

came to Valley View Village so many time that he could drive to Des Moines with his eye closed, but who

over saw the new project from beginning to end. I would like to thank his wife and children for sharing

Andrew with us. Finally, I would like to thank the staff, residents, family members, and tenants to have the

patience while we were in construction. I know that there were times when it was difficult to maneuver

around the construction work to come to chapel or many of the evening entertainment programs, but I

sincerely, thank you all.

This will be my last letter to be put in the Valley View Village news and I would like to say thank you to all

of you who I have had the privilege to know and serve. The past twelve years has been a blessing from taking

this campus from near bankruptcy to watching a new Assisted Living and a new Health Center be built. The

third phase will come in the future with as much beauty as we have seen with the two new buildings that have

made their appearance to this campus. I would like to thank my wonderful staff members who have worked

side by side with me during the bad times as well as the good and I would like to thank Bob Dahl, Ron

Sanford, and the entire team of Elim Care Inc. for having the vision to make Valley View Village a wonderful

place to live.

As God told Moses to have Aaron bless the Israelites, “May the LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD

make his face shine on you and is gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and gives you

peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

Farewell,

Bradley Cole, Executive Director
