Parish Mission Statement Our Lady of Good Counsel parish is a Roman Catholic Community of Faith founded by the Augustinian Friars in 1899. Called by God to proclaim and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ through our celebration of the Word and Sacraments. Guided by the life of Christ, joined in Baptism, and inspired by the Grace of the Holy Spirit, we strive to embody the presence of God in the world today through worship, outward discipleship, and service. We are rich in diversity and welcome others in a spirit of acceptance, hospitality, and fellowship.

From the Pastor’s Desk Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: “The Healing Power of Jesus” Today is the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. On this Sunday, like always Jesus manifests his healing love and authority by curing the leper who was forced to live under severe restrictions by Jewish legislation. He turned to Jesus in his need and was filled with joy. All of us are called to imitate the healing and compassionate Jesus. Let us not allow any human or spiritual obstacle to prevent us from going to Jesus when life seems unbearable. Jesus made it very clear,” come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest… (Mathew 11:28). Jesus will never lie; Jesus will never fail. Therefore, let us turn all our worries and difficulties to His healing and comforting power. Human beings are made of body and soul. Both of these two important elements need to be fed, nourished, and updated for life to be more meaningful. God has blessed us with an abundance of material things. Nobody will die of material hunger. The problems tormenting many of us today are spiritual in nature. Our soul is searching for its creator. No amount of material abundance and technological power can fill the hunger inside our hearts for truth and peace. Continued on page 3

Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Tema: “El Poder Sanador de Jesús” Hoy es el Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. En este domingo, como siempre, Jesús manifiesta su amor sanador y su autoridad al curar al leproso que se vio obligado a vivir bajo severas restricciones por la legislación judía. Se volvió a Jesús en su necesidad y se llenó de gozo. Todos estamos llamados a imitar al Jesús compasivo y sanador. No permitamos que ningún obstáculo humano o espiritual nos impida acudir a Jesús cuando la vida parece insoportable. Jesús lo dejó muy claro, “venid a mí todos los que estáis cansados y lleváis cargas pesadas, y yo os haré descansar… (Mateo 11:28). Jesús nunca mentirá; Jesús nunca fallará. Por lo tanto, dirijamos todas nuestras preocupaciones y dificultades a Su poder sanador y consolador. Los seres humanos están hechos de cuerpo y alma. Ambos elementos importantes deben ser alimentados, nutridos y actualizados para que la vida sea más significativa. Dios nos ha bendecido con abundancia de cosas materiales. February 14, 2021 (Continúación de la página 1) Permítanme plantear estas preguntas para reflexionar cuando regresemos a casa hoy después de la Santa Misa. ¿Hemos crecido como individuos, familia, comunidad y como nación en nuestro nivel de vida espiritual? ¿Nos hemos vuelto más justos, compasivos y generosos con los muchos dones que Dios nos ha dado? ¿Hemos avanzado en el cuidado del más pequeño de nuestros hermanos y hermanas? En muchas ocasiones, parece que olvidamos que estamos llamados a usar nuestra buena salud y las cosas materiales para servir a Dios y al prójimo. Todos los días después de la misa, en nuestra oración comunitaria, rezamos, Señor Jesús, ayúdanos a usar todas las gracias y dones, talentos y habilidades que nos has dado para construir tu iglesia. Doy gracias a Dios porque Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo no se queda atrás en el apoyo a los pobres ya la Iglesia. En nuestra primera lectura de hoy del libro de Levítico, vemos cómo los leprosos fueron tratados cruelmente en el pasado. Se los veía como marginados y se los aislaba de la comunidad porque se los consideraba impuros. En nuestro mundo moderno, la única forma en que siento que algunos están siendo tratados como leprosos en nuestras comunidades es en nuestra superioridad moral sobre algunas personas o grupos. Es lamentable que la mayoría de las veces avancemos en la ilusión moral, pero no siempre en nuestra realidad moral. Sí, por supuesto, abundan los leprosos modernos, quizás el caso más publicitado condena la difícil situación de las personas con SIDA / VIH. Estas personas a menudo son abusadas y rechazadas para morir solas. Se les considera inmundos moral y físicamente. Son los nuevos “hermanos y hermanas más pequeños”. Les negamos lo básico de respeto, cuidado y dignidad. Con demasiada frecuencia, todo lo que vemos es su enfermedad en lugar de un ser humano creado a imagen y semejanza de Dios. (Continued from page 1) Permit me to pose these questions for reflections as we go home today after the Holy Mass. Have we grown as individuals, family, community, and as a nation in our spiritual standard of living? Have we become more just, compassionate, and generous with the many gifts God has given us? Have we advanced in caring for the least of our brothers and sisters? On many occasions, we seem to forget that we are called to use our good health and material things to serve God and our neighbor. Every day after the mass, in our community prayer, we pray, Lord Jesus, help us to use all the graces and gifts, talents, and abilities that you have given us in order to build up your church. I give thanks to God for Our Lady of Good Counsel is not lagging behind in the support of the poor and the Church. In our first reading today from the book of Leviticus, we see how the lepers were cruelly treated in the past. They were seen as outcasts and were isolated from the community because there were seen as unclean. In our modern world, the only way I feel some are being treated like lepers in our communities is in our moral superiority over some people or groups. It is unfortunate that most often we advance in moral illusion, but not always in our moral reality. Yes, of course, modern lepers abound, perhaps the most publicized case condemns the plight of those with AID/HIV These people are often abused and rejected to die alone. They are morally and physically judged to be unclean. They are the new “least of our brothers and sisters” We deny them the basics of respect, care, and dignity. Too often, all we see is their disease rather than a human being made in the image and likeness of God. Other modern lepers also could be the elderly, whom our society declares to be obsolete and useless. Society wants to eliminate them. We worship youth and see in the elderly all that we fear. We reject those who have had abortions maybe not from their own faults, due to life circumstances. We must defend life and the unborn, but we must do so with love. The elders and the unborn are defenseless. Jesus always loved sinners and hated sin with the hope they would repent. We are being challenged to find loving and creative ways to minister to the weak and the oppressed. This is the mission Jesus handed over to us. The gospel of Mark made it very clear today that Jesus is moved with pity on lepers. “Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, ‘I do, will it. Be cured.’ Jesus risked contamination and condemnation because he knew that real healing comes through involvement and the willingness to risk touching others in a caring, loving way. As we celebrate God’s love in the Eucharist, let us remember that we are all gathered at his table and partake of bread and one cup. We need to be healed and cleaned. These come when we minister to one another.
