SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK THEME: Jesus Christ and John the Baptist’s Leadership. Jesus Christ and John the Baptist are the answers to the frightening questions of life
and leadership in the world. When the leaders of nations are corrupt, its people usu-
ally suffer. The human family on this planet is afflicted with many maladies result-
ing from lack of leadership. The Hebrews of Isaiah’s time (800 B.C.) yearned for a
leader, an ideal king, who would be capable of restoring the nation and endowing it
once again with the peace and prosperity of King David’s time.
Jesus Christ and John the Baptist are God-given leaders, who came to establish
God’s kingdom on earth, “a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of justice, love and
peace.” Every authentic leader must follow the example of Jesus and John the Bap-
tist. They trouble the comfortable and speak truth to princes. This is never easy.
In our own generation, we are much better at comforting the troubled. We learn to
keep silent so as to not upset the peace or the status quo. However, if we never say to
those entrusted to us, “Reform your lives! The reign of God is at hand,” then we
must examine our needs for group-approval. Reformation and conversion are con-
stant needs in the spiritual life. We need to be challenged to draw ever closer to the
Mystery that is Jesus Christ and John the Baptist. Without such a challenge, we too
easily become a mere club or social group “where seldom is heard a challenging
word.” We find ourselves in the kind of association where everyone gets along. But
at what price?

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR TEMA Jesucristo y el liderazgo de Juan el Bautista.
Jesucristo y Juan el Bautista son las respuestas a las preguntas aterradoras de la vida
y el liderazgo en el mundo. Cuando los líderes de las naciones son corruptos, su gen-
te suele sufrir. La familia humana en este planeta está afligida con muchas enferme-
dades resultantes de la falta de liderazgo. Los hebreos de la época de Isaías (800
a.C.) anhelaban un líder, un rey ideal, que sería capaz de restaurar la nación y dotarla
una vez más de la paz y prosperidad del tiempo del rey David. Jesucristo y Juan el
Bautista son líderes dados por Dios, quienes vinieron a establecer el reino de Dios en
la tierra, "un reino de verdad y vida, un reino de justicia, de amor y de paz". Todo
líder auténtico debe seguir el ejemplo de Jesús y Juan El Bautista. Ellos molestan a

TEMA: Jesucristo y el liderazgo de Juan el Bautista. En nuestra comunidad (OLGC), nos encontramos en posiciones
de seguimiento y liderazgo. El Adviento es un buen momento
para examinar las maneras en que seguimos a los demás ya quie-
nes seguimos. ¿Nos damos demasiado fácilmente ya un precio
demasiado alto? En nuestras diversas maneras de experimentar el
liderazgo, ¿lideramos al servir? ¿Imitamos al Nacido en un pese-
bre, que lavó los pies de sus discípulos y fue abandonado en la
cruz? ¿O imitamos al que está en el desierto gritando y predican-
do arrepentimiento y conversión? ¿Nos encontramos tratando
deservir y agarrando lugares de honor y posiciones de influencia?
Estas no son preguntas fáciles de pedir mucho menos respuesta.
Pero el que bautiza en el Espíritu Santo y en fuego le preguntará
y exigirá una respuesta. ¿Cuál es tu opinión?

THEME: Jesus Christ and John the Baptist’s lea-
dership. In our community (OLGC), we find ourselves in positions of
both following and leading. Advent is a good time to exam-
ine the ways we follow others—and whom we follow. Do we
give ourselves too easily and at too great a price? In our vari-
ous ways of experiencing leadership, do we lead by serving?
Do we imitate the One born in a manger, who washed the
feet of his disciples and was abandoned on the cross? Or do
we imitate the one in the desert shouting and preaching re-
pentance and conversion? Do we find ourselves seeking to
be served and grabbing places of honor and positions of
clout?
These are not easy questions to ask much less answer. But
the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit and fire will ask and
will demand an answer. What is your opinion?

Próximo Fin de Semana, Diciembre 10-11
La colecta anual para apoyar con los fondos de Religiosos
retirados será el próximo fin de semana. Por muchos años
los religiosos hombres y mujeres, especialmente hermanas y
hermanos, sirvieron en parroquias, escuelas, hospitales y en
otros ministerios en nuestro país, a menudo recibiendo ingre-
so mínimo. Muchos de nosotros recordamos el número de
religiosos. Sus ingresos proveían para sus necesidades en su
vida de retirados. El trabajo de los miembros más jóvenes
hace posible el apoyo y cuidado de los ancianos. La realidad
es ahora diferente. Muchos religiosos son viejos. La edad
promedio es de más de sesenta años. Muchos aún siguen sir-
viendo en nuevos ministerios en sus años de vejez. Ellos
dependen de nuestra ayuda para el cuidado tanto de la salud
como en su retiro. Nosotros fuimos bendecidos por sus fieles
ministerios. Gracias por su generosidad para con ellos en
esta segunda colecta.

El Arbolito ya está en exhibición decorado con los adornos hechos por los estudiantes de OLGC. Favor de tomar uno de los adornos y devuelva el artículo lo más pronto posible. Nuestra meta este año es la misma del año pasa-do, nos gustaría que fuera un invierno cálido para todos, por lo tanto estamos pidiendo sombreros, guantes, mito-nes y bufandas,. La distribución de Navidad comienza el 4 de Diciembre y continuará el 11 y 18 de Diciembre. Una vez más, gracias por su ayuda este ano y siempre .

Annual Collection for Retired Religious
Next Weekend, December 10-11
The Annual Collection to support the retirement fund
for Religious will be next weekend. For many years
the religious men and women, especially sisters and
brothers, served in parishes, schools, hospitals and
other ministries in our country, often receiving a
minimum stipend. Many of us remember the numbers
of religious. Their stipends provided for their daily
lives but did not allow many congregations to pro-vide for the retirement needs. The work of the
younger members was able to support the care of eld-
erly and infirm members. The reality is different
now. Many religious are older. The average age is
late sixties. Many are still serving in new ministries in
their senior years. They depend on us to support
them both for health care and retirement. We were
blessed by their faithful ministries. Thank you for
your generosity to them in this second collection.

Our Giving Tree is up and decorated with ornaments made by OLGC students. Please take one and return the item on it as soon as possible. Our goal this year is the same as last year, we would like to make it a warm winter for all, therefore we are asking for hats, gloves, mittens & scarves. Christmas distribution begins on December 4 and continues on December 11 and 18. Again, thank you for your assistance this year and al-ways. May God bless you always! Happy Holiday!
