Participants & Industry Profiles
Participants Profile:
Students of 4th Semester have reached a stage in their
academics at which they need some exposure to the real life
industry working environment. It can only be achieved by
conducting an industrial visit such as this one. They also
study a subject called Electrical Power Generation (EPG)
during their semester 4 studies, which has Nuclear Power
Plant as a part of subject. So, visit of NPCIL, KAKRAPAR will
help them understand the working of a Nuclear power plant.

produces electricity using Nuclear fuel. It is governed by
Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. (DAE). It was
established under companies act 1956 in 1987. Currently NPCIL
has total generation capacity of 6780 MWe. The plant that was
visited by GMIT students of 4th Electrical is situated in KAKRAPAR
and has installed capacity of 440 MWe.

Objective
The main objective of this industrial visit was to bring the
students one step closer to the real world of power generation
using Nuclear fuels. Here, the students were to be brought to
understand the concept and working of the various parts of a
Nuclear power plant.

Key points of the Visit Session 1 (Pre Lunch):
The visit was divided into two sessions. Pre Lunch & post
Lunch sessions. In pre-lunch session, the students were taken to
Training centre where various models of different equipments used
at NPCIL were kept. Training centre had two working models of
whole power plant which initially gave overall idea about the
operations in a typical Nuclear power plant. Then the students
were divided in to two teams which then went on to go at all the
posters in training centre. The posters were of various topics such
as
1. History of NPCIL
2. Nuclear Fusion & Fission
3. Fuel rod assembly in NPCIL, KAKRAPAR
4. Ongoing & Future projects of NPCIL
Students were then taken to the lunch room where they had
some rest and doubt solving by NPCIL officials who accompanied
us throughout the visit.

Session 2 (Post Lunch):
Second session was conducted on field. The students which
were divided in to two teams were then taken to visit the boiler
assembly building. Here, they understood control panels in control
room and operation of fuel injection using animation. They also
learned how fuels are to be treated once they are used and where
to store them. i.e. under water. Mr. Mukesh Vaghela explained all
of above systems and also showed students storage of used fuel
rods via camera. Then the teams were taken to terrace of the plant
from where ongoing development’s bird eye view was given by
NPCIL officials. The teams were further taken to various parts of
building like battery storage unit & boiler piping system along with
generator assembly. Operation of all the equipments were given in
detail. Students also asked various doubts and got eye opening
replies regarding myths and reality of nuclear power plant
operations. Then the students were again taken to training centre
where they were given the booklets of NPCIL which illustrated
social activities being carried out by the NPCIL in nearby villages.

Major Outcomes
The main aim of this visit was to introduce the industry
outlook of the Nuclear power plant that they study during their
academics. The participants of the visit learned following.
1. Understood the operation of the Nuclear Power plant
2. Understood how fuel handling is one of the most important
thing when it comes to Nuclear power plant
3. Cleared the myth regarding nuclear energy and understood
its positive impacts
4. Understood the advantages of the Nuclear power plant over
others.
