Dear Friends,

After a few days of 70-degree weather, I am sure I am not alone in wanting to have winter behind us! Despite the month’s shorter duration, it always seems that February lingers just a bit too long, and that spring will never come.

Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a state of perpetual winter? C.S. Lewis does in his book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. When Lucy enters the land of Narnia, she discovers a lifeless land of grey skies and snow, and ice that never thaws. “Always cold. Always frozen. Always.”

That is what scripture tells us life would be like without Jesus Christ. Without God sending his son to live for us, die for us, and rise again for us, we would live in a perpetual state of death and darkness. Always winter. Never spring. “If Christ had not been raised,” Paul says, “our faith would be futile.” (1 Cor. 15:14) Our hope would become hopeless.

That is what it was like for the disciples as they journeyed with Jesus from Jerusalem to the cross. Hiding in an upper room, watching Judas betray their Lord, falling asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane, giving up hope when Jesus is tried and convicted and nailed to a cross. They believed their hope had become hopeless.

Then three days later, their hope was restored. The sun came out, their fears thawed, and spring had come. Never again would darkness and death have the final word. “In his great mercy Christ has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)

(Continued from page 1)

Our season of Lent ends with Easter, just as surely as the season of winter ends with the advent of spring. One-third of Lent’s forty days are behind us…and just beyond is the hope of new life to come! May we anticipate with joy the glory of new birth as we walk these remaining days of Lent.

In Christ,

Jeanne

Cantata Sunday

On Palm Sunday the chancel choir will be presenting Vivaldi’s Gloria during worship. RV 589 in D major is a familiar and popular piece among sacred works by Vivaldi, written around 1715. There are several big chorus movements, an alto solo, and a soprano duet within this piece.

I am anxious and excited! I am getting together an ensemble group with violins, viola, cello, oboe, and trumpet. Let me share some lyrics with you: “On high glory be to God, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we worship you we glorify you. You who take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.” This is only part of the text. Please join us on Palm Sunday during the worship service to see the rest and listen to the chancel choir!

All-Church Choir

Please consider joining us on March 18th for this month’s All-Church Choir. Come to the sanctuary at 9:30. One practice is all you’ll need.

I have chosen “And Can It Be?” by Dan Forrest with the well-known hymn text by Charles Wesley. This piece has been described as, “A quiet contemplative opening builds gradually to a confident stating of the truth of the gospel, ending with a pensive reiteration of the question and the assurance of the amazing love.” Come, feel the power of the texts and the music.

Junior Choir

This past Sunday, NSPC’s Junior Choir sang a great children’s song, “I’ve Got the Joy Down In My Heart!” They did a fabulous job accompanying themselves with hand chimes! I am so proud of all of them, and hopefully I can have them to do this all the time! After the Lent/Easter season, I plan to have the Junior Choir sing the last week of each month! ~Ting Ting Wong Director of Music

I am continually amazed by the youth’s maturity in their faith. Youth Group on

January 29th taught students how to maintain respectful relationships with their

parents. Honoring their parents with acts of kindness and thankfulness brings joy

to God’s heart. Each student was challenged to show their appreciation for their

parents throughout the week. God gave us parents to love and guide us, and we

are to respect them with our actions and words.

Following Youth Group, we ate dinner at Uno’s to support the Rise Against Hunger

Fundraiser. Camaraderie and fellowship brought the group closer to one another.

On February 4, the youth collected donations for Rise Against Hunger during Souper Bowl of Caring. The

middle schoolers stood outside the sanctuary with pots labeled “Eagles” and “Patriots.” Congregants were

encouraged to drop money into whichever team’s pot they wanted to win the Super Bowl. We raised $223

for this great cause!

First Sunday Social is March 4 at Sky Zone. Please check your e-mail for more information.

Kids’ Group met in February and saw elementary schoolers learn to love. The theme

“Love Your Neighbor” taught students how to treat others as Jesus would. Jesus’ example

of service and compassion showed the students how to love those around them.

After playing games, eating lunch, and hearing the lesson,

the children put their faith into action. By creating an

assembly line, the 11 students effectively stuffed “breakfast bags” for the

homeless. Bananas, applesauce, granola bars, water bottles, and handwritten

cards filled the breakfast bags. Marty Hetzner graciously took them to Chester

Eastside that week.

The next Kids’ Group is Sunday, March 4th from 11:45 AM-12:45 PM. Lunch will be provided.

Page 7: NSPC Connections

Finally, the children and youth participated in our second Parents’ Night Out

Fundraiser. On February 10th, the Youth Group babysat the elementary schoolers

while their parents enjoyed an evening out. We ate dinner, played games, and

watched a movie. We raised $120 for the Youth Fund.

Garden Spring Clean-Up: Saturday, April 7 starting at 9 AM

We are looking for as many able-bodied people as possible to assist in getting the community garden area presentable. Bring any and all tools that you think can be used to complete the following tasks:

1. Rake up all the leaves, shred, and compost.

2. Weed pathways.

3. Tear apart and rebuild 15 beds (replacement wood will be prepped ahead of time).

4. After pathways are cleared - spread wood chips where needed.

5. Sort through compost bins, shredding what makes sense and disposing of the rest.

Tearing apart the beds is the most time-consuming task but many hands make light work! Please consider making an effort to join us in completing these projects.

Happy Gardening,

John Wellington

Knitting for Peace – “Make the World a Better Place, one Stitch at a Time” This small group of women work diligently and enthusiastically behind the scenes. Along with the clicking sounds of the knitting needles and crochet hooks, the room is often filled with hearty laughter and lively conversation. Pictured with some of the 33 scarves that were made over the past several months: (left to right) Marg MacDonald, knitter; Joey Yocum, knitter extraordinaire (who works with us through our knitting mistakes); and Bernice Eder, knitter. (Not pictured are: Dorothy Gauntlett, Louise DiCecco, Elsie Oreski, Margie Conway, Irene Bernabeo, and Carol Videon, who says that Monday is her favorite day of the week because she enjoys the group so much). Right before Christmas, Joey delivered the scarves to Covenant House in Philadelphia which “helps teenagers and adolescents turn the tragedy of homelessness into an opportunity for growth and transformation”. They were extremely grateful for this donation. If you enjoy knitting or crocheting and would like to join us, we meet in the Conference Room on Monday mornings from 10 AM until noon. We are knitting scarves right now in whatever pattern you would like and there is never any rush to finish a project – we just keep on knitting and knitting and crocheting and crocheting.

If you cannot come on Monday mornings but you would like to knit or crochet at home and donate your scarf, or if you have any other questions please call Marg MacDonald 610 353-8297 or e-mail [email protected].

Dear NSPC Community, Thank you for your heart-filled welcome for Lauryn and I this year. Serving at this church has afforded us so many opportunities to grow in our ministries and learn how to be better pastors. One of the best parts about Princeton Theological Seminary so far has been my experience with field education placements, which is why I am at NSPC. These placements expose students to a diversity of ministry experiences and help us develop our pastoral skills as we participate in the life of the church. I was blessed to do my first field education placements at Beyond Malibu, a Young Life summer camp in British Columbia. Young Life is an international youth ministry known for relational ministry and its incredible summer camp network. At Beyond, I worked as a mountain guide along with 20 other men and women and was part of a staff of 35 people. The trips I will be leading again this summer are intentional week long mountaineering adventures in which students are brought into raw wilderness in which they would never find themselves and introduced to the Gospel. These trips are powerful experiences for our

Page 10: NSPC Connections

P A G E 1 0

campers, and many leave with a deeper, and more real sense of what it means to follow Jesus with our entire lives. All of the staff are volunteers and, as a result, we are responsible for our travel expenses and gear expenses.

My summer-long experiences I had leading trips and sharing the gospel in a radically different context have significantly impacted my growth as a pastor. I experienced the challenge of taking the gospel and changing how I present it, depending on the context of the person who is listening. I spent countless hours listening to students talk about incredibly challenging circumstances in their personal lives. Learning how to respond in a sensitive, pastoral way that calls them deeper to faith was challenging. I struggled, failed, succeeded, and ultimately grew in learning how to care for people better.

This summer, I am headed back up to Beyond! I am thrilled that I will be able to continue in this adventure that God is leading me on, but I also have some financial needs to be able to fully participate again. In order to attend the requisite trainings, I need to raise money to purchase flights to head back to Seattle, WA for training and for covering food and gear related expenses that I have. I am trying to raise $1500 to cover the flights and costs.

Would you consider financially partnering with me as I head back up to British Columbia as a missionary for the summer? Any amount helps, and it would be wonderful to take NSPC with me back up to Beyond and into the future.

If you want to support me financially there are three ways to do so. Go to giving.younglife.org and select the tab that says camp. Select “Beyond Malibu” in the dropdown

menu entitled “Camp Selection.” Select “Operating” as the target fund. Enter how much you want to support me with, and select “One Time” for the frequency. In order to ensure that I am able to receive this money, indicate that it is a “tribute gift” and write my name (Ryan Pearce) as the person receiving a tribute donation. This ensures that I will be able to receive the money from Beyond.

You can mail a check to Beyond Malibu, PO Box 15662, Seattle, WA, 98115-0662. Make the check out to Beyond Malibu and in the notes indicate it is for Ryan Pearce

The first two options are tax deductible because Young Life is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. If you prefer, you can give me a personal check, but you won’t be able to claim it as tax deductible (to my knowledge).

I am blessed to be surrounded by such a faithful cloud of witnesses who continue to remind me of the good news of Jesus Christ! Thank you for serving the Lord with me.

Blessings,

Ryan Pearce

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” —Lev. 19:18

Around the world, people lack access to food, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. Each gift to One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) serves to help change the lives of people in these challenging situations. The Offering provides us a way to share God’s love with our neighbors in need.

One Great Hour of Sharing, received during the season of Lent, makes a difference in the world through

three impactful programs: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and

Self-Development of People.

Please make all checks out to NSPC and write “OGHS” in the memo line. Bulletin inserts highlighting the

positive impact of our gifts will be in the March 25th and April 1st bulletins. Easter Sunday, April 1st, will

be the last day to make a donation. Below is a short history of the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering and

quick facts about the benefiting programs. Please join Christians across the country in supporting those in

need around the world.

A Free Special Event to benefit Rise Against Hunger and the PRC at the Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union in Newtown Square

Wednesday, March 7th, 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM

Libations and Light Refreshments Served

Meghan Todd, the Manager at the Franklin Mint Credit Union, posed with “Brookside Farm” for an article about Art for a Cause. And last month, Jim and Karen Shea happily purchased this beautiful painting by Margaret Haines, along with “Philly Nocturne” by Lisa Prinzo.

The Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, 3741 West Chester Pike, will host a special event on March 7th from 5 to 7:30 PM to support Rise Against Hunger and the PRC. Dozens of beautiful, original pieces of art will be available for sale – and multiple artists who have donated will attend. Hear them describe the inspirations for their work, their mediums, and why they donated. These artists (including our own Cheryl Koch) have already generated thousands of dollars for Rise Against Hunger. This is a great opportunity to thank them and enjoy the art together.

This art sale will coincide with the monthly meeting of the Newtown Square Business Association…and the public is welcome! Join local business owners, friends, neighbors, and potential new members at the FMFCU (between Mod Pizza and AT&T) on West Chester Pike.

50% of this art sale will go to Newtown Square Presbyterian Church’s Rise Against Hunger event. Over

20,500 meals will be packed for hungry school children on March 11th.

50% of this art sale will go to the Pennsylvania Resources Council, which supports environmental education programs and events.

Rise Against Hunger Meal Packaging

Event:

March 11 from 3:00-5:00 PM

Workers Needed from Ages 4-104

On March 11, 2018 NSPC will host its third all-church, intergenerational event called Rise Against Hunger

(formerly Stop Hunger Now). Rise Against Hunger provides life-saving meals to starving children and orphans

in developing countries across the world. It was founded in 1998 by Ray Buchanan, an ordained United

Methodist minister with the vision of ending hunger in his lifetime. Since that time, they have provided over

362 million meals in 74 countries.

Due to your generous participation in a variety of fundraisers, we have exceeded our goal of $6000 and have

some seed money for Rise Against Hunger 2019!

The NEXT STEP is signing up just a few more workers for the meal-packaging event on March 11th. Our social

hall can accommodate a maximum of 125 workers. We were at capacity last year. After reaching 125

volunteers, names will be put on a waiting list.

You may sign up to work on March 11 from 3:00-5:00 in one of two ways:

On Sunday, March 4th, after worship, look for someone in the lounge with a clipboard to sign-up in

person.

Send an email to Lynne Corle: [email protected] Please include your name, email address and

phone number. Also include the number of adults packing meals and the number and ages of

participating children.

Finally, if you would like to be involved setting up for the event, please let us know when you sign-up or

contact Allen Corle: [email protected] .

A contribution is not required to work at the event.

This will be an amazing hands-on mission event. Many young families in the church have actively requested

meaningful hands-on mission experiences for themselves and their children. This is it. Others have

expressed a sincere desire to increase their mission giving. Here’s your chance.

We believe the opportunity for us to make a difference in the lives of these young and innocent children is

staggering. We hope you do too.
