Twenty libraries surveyed from across the USA
17 respondents 8 respondents from small
to medium sized academic research libraries
4 respondents from medical/research libraries of varying size
5 respondents from large academic research libraries

4 respondents were from the Southern US including one medical/research library
4 respondents were from the Eastern US
4 respondents were from the Midwestern US including 2 medical research libraries
5 respondents were from the Western US with one medical/research library

What is the current situation of your library and how do you see it evolving over the next few years?

Is your budget being affected, if so what (content/staff/operations) are libraries being forced to cut first and how quickly is this happening?
For 2009, respondents indicated anywhere from flat budget to 19% cuts
For 2010 anticipated up to another 20% cuts

Are there any new government funding initiatives or areas of research that are getting more support?
Special programs=special funding
New programs/new research areas=sheltered from cuts
US Stimulus-maybe? NIH grants?

No new groups but some groups more active than others

Would you advocate for a per-per-view article access model from a publisher such as NPG?
Not for Nature ISSN: 0028-0836 due to cost per use
For the monthlies, review journals, & hosted content, more likely to consider
All thought the model should be offered; 6 felt this model wouldn’t work for them

What advice would you give to publishers?
Keep price increases flat or nominal
Offer multiple purchasing models/flexibility
