Atarho and Onowa dwelt:

He hunting thro' the woodland strayed ;

She lived the love her fond heart felt.

Till once, as far he chased the deer,

Onowa sickened and she died ;

Then like the autumn leaf grew sere

His life—and cold his fire side.

III.

Until his sorrow to deceive,

A figure rude of wood made he

That cheating grief he might believe

Onowa bore him company.

V.

'Twas thus had passed a year or more

E'er once, returning from the chase, The kettle meat-filled as of yore,

Was simm'ring o'er the fireplace.

VII.

The morrow, soon his hunting o'er,

And hast'ning back ere eventide

A woman, bearing brush he saw

Into his wig-wam softly glide.

IX.

Atarho, see your wife returns."

The Holder of the Heavens said :

" Go back to him whose heart still burns

With love unceasing for the dead.

XI.

Atarho thrilled to hear her voice

There in the wig-wam warm and dim ;

And in her eyes he saw rejoice

The love her fond heart held for him.

XIII.

The night came on—with joyous zest

Atarho built his sleeping fire ;

The sluns he spread whereon to rest

And in his soul awoke desire.

IV.

And, e'er returning from the hunt,— He'd lavish on the lifeless thing

A love that bade him bear the Jbrunt Of lonely hours of suf-f'ring.

VI.

Yet tho' he searched, he naught could find,

And lifeless still the doll of wood,

Poor solace to his love assigned,

Beside the flaming pineknots stood.

VIII.

He thrust aside the door of skin,

His heart athrob with wild desire,

No more the doll of wood within

Onowa sat «beside the fire.

X.

" Yet must you see some other face

Of your own tribe, not his alone,

Ere you may yield to love's embrace,

Or else the grave shall claim its own."

XII.

So urged by tender longing forth

They left their woodland hut behind, And thro' the forest travelled north

The wig-warns of their tribe to find.

XIV.

His heart was stirred, he opened wide His yearning arms beneath the moon.—

tl Alas, no one we've seen ", she cried, " Forbear, and touch me not so soon."

XV.

But ardent scorning her alarms,

He laughed nor passion more withstood.

He caught her to him—in his arms

He held the lifeless doll of wood.
