Towards the end of October
students and Site Coordinators in
Communities In Schools took the
time during their lunch periods to
inform their peers of Breast Cancer
Awareness. The students handed
out pink ribbons and breast cancer
informational flyers to the students
at their high schools. Each of the
students were eager to inform their
2
peers about the warning signs of
Breast Cancer and who to contact for
further concerns. If you would like to
have more information about how to
check for breast cancer, warning
signs and any other information
concerning breast cancer, please
visit your local health facility or go
online to nationalbreastcancer.org.

CIS 8th graders from Parker and
Edwards Middle Schools had the
opportunity to visit North Carolina
Wesleyan College on November 5.
Before the tour began the President
Clark spoke with the students about
the importance of time management
and study skills in college when
discussing his personal college
story. One of the admission advisors
spoke with the students about why
GPA, SAT & ACT scores are
2
important for college acceptance and
what to do to make sure the students
achieve the scores necessary to be
accepted into a college or university.
One of the best points made during
both speeches was that it is NEVER
too early to start preparing for
college!
TOURING THE CAMPUS
To tour the campus the students and
site coordinators broke into groups
3
and paired up with a tour guide of
the college. The students were given
a “bingo” sheet of questions about
the college and were asked to find
the answers throughout the tour.
During the tour the students had a
chance to view the campus library,
student center, gym, food courts and
a freshman dorm room. The students
enjoyed seeing the different facilities
and were quite surprised about the
size of a dorm room.

ENDING THE TOUR
At the end of each of the
tours we were all treated to
a wonderful buffet style
lunch in one of Wesleyan’s
cafeterias. The students
loved this portion of the
trip! After everyone completed their
2
meals, the students gathered
together in the auditorium where
they had the opportunity to ask
and answer questions about what
they had learned. The 8th graders
enjoyed their trip and are very
eager to start their own college
journeys in the future.

CIS High School Juniors & Seniors Visit North Carolina Central University
1
High School Seniors and juniors from Nash Central,
Northern Nash and Rocky
Mount High Schools had the
opportunity to visit the
campus of North Carolina
Central University on
November 7. The tour guide
took students around campus
and showed them the
residence halls, student
center, Greek plots, food courts and the many
different departmental buildings. During the tour the
students witnessed men and women dressed
2
professionally for Founders Day Convocation. After touring the
beautiful campus of NCCU, there was an
informational session for the students to
learn about the university, what it takes to
apply, the requirements/prerequisites,
the different degrees offered and so
much more! The students also had the
opportunity to eat in the university’s café
as a college student would. This college
visit opened up the eyes of the students
to help them see some of the possibilities that lie ahead in their
future and what it is going to take to get them there. It was
definitely a trip that everyone who attended will not forget!

Study Tips: 1. Time management – manage your time correctly with your homework assignments so that you do not end up stressing yourself trying to get it all done last minute. It takes dedication but it is beneficial in the long run and leaves yourself time to do things you enjoy.
2. Organize - your work, and your planner so that you can keep track of future and present tasks. This will help you remember quiz or test days.
3. Motivate – yourself to do your homework, study, and all other important tasks, because if you want to be successful you have to start now with school. Remember YOU are the only one who has to live with your decisions, so make wise ones!
