Support cambodia Charity Number 1160483 Helping Communities in North-West Cambodia November 2017 MANGO NEWS November 2017 WE’VE BEEN “KEEPING UP THE ENERGY” with a record number of projects funded by SUPPORT CAMBODIA during 2017. In addition to projects at Tampung, CROAP Agricultural Centre, Prey Santeas Primary School and Pursat [all detailed in the July issue], Kitchenettes at Phnom Priel and Prey Santeas Schools have ensured Rice Feeding continues all year round and the Vegetable Garden at Kon Damrai is now providing fresh vegetables for the School. Our Annual Appeal raised the $1500 needed for the Rice Soup and Baby Milk Programmes in Svay Sisophon and the hugely successful Race Night provided most of the money needed for the Rohal Microcredit Project [more about this on the website]. A Community Water Filter for Nikum Village has been funded by the wonderful ‘Gorleston Ladies’ [see ‘LINKS’ on Page 3] and the efforts of our Coin Jar holders will help to provide Family Water Filters for a number of rural families. Other projects include Bikes for students in Nikum Village and contributions to pay for vitamins and toiletries for distribution during the annual Trustee visit. The generosity of so many people has enabled the completion of these projects slightly ahead of schedule, so Support cambodia has been in a position to also contribute to the construction of the new kitchen at Lavalla Student Hostel in Pailin. Although not a glamorous project, the plumbing for this kitchen is essential to complete the next stage of this brand new hostel which will, when complete, provide residential accomodation for up to 100 young people from the very poorest homes in Pailin Province. FROM THE TRUSTEES So many people have contributed to making these projects happen so if you’ve served on a stall or in the kitchen, dressed teddy bears, grown plants, made cakes or soup, donated in any way, attended events or just ‘spread the word’ about the charity [very important] the Trustees, Katie & Bob, Jan, Ian and Carol would like to say: PAGE 1 ‘OKOON CHAREN’ THANK YOU FOR ‘SUPPORTING CAMBODIA’ We can’t do it without you! CAMBODIA PEOPLE Thank you to Bon Bon’s, Eclipse Hair Studio, Peggy Little’s Products and The Tech Geeks for sponsoring part of the charity’s administration costs for 2017/18. This helps to ensure all charity donations

go

go directly to the projects. Thanks also to The Fat Cat Pub [Norwich], Carousel Chocolates, Bond’s Chip Shop & Bon Bon’s [all Aylsham], Tech Geeks [NW] & Peggy Little’s for displaying our collecting tins. We’re also very grateful to the following businesses for their generous Race Night sponsorship: Broadland Travel, Showcase Gallery, The Green Room Cafe, Buckenham Farms, Rossi’s Leisure, Lavenders Blue, Just North Walsham, Nanny’s Cakes and raffle donors Lidl Stores, Pavillion Theatre Cromer, Mary Jane’s Fish Bar, The Banningham Crown, Blooming Crates, Peggy Little’s, Bocadillosand Spring Floral Design. Thank you to all of them for “ Supporting Cambodia”- please give them your custom if you can. Two pictures created by disabled artist Cha Chayi [‘Mr Pu’] were auctioned atthe Race Night, raising £50 to be split between the Rohal Microcredit Projectand Mr Pu .Among our major donors this year [most of whom have asked to remainanonymous] the ‘Gorleston Ladies’ really deserve a mention: Amy, Corrine,Elizabeth, June B, June T, Jean, Joan, Moira, Maureen and Rosemarie havefunded the Prey Santeas Borewell and already have enough for a future well in 2018. Truly, our ‘Fundraisers of the Year’ - congratulations and thank you ladies! Elizabeth Serpell has been busy producung some wonderful homemade soaps [lime, orange, lemon and peppermint], a selection of preserves including scrummy Lavender Sugar and beautiful ‘candles in a cup’.

Look out for the “Elizabeth” range on our stalls over next few weeks – all proceeds to Support

cambodia. Thanks for your hard work Elizabeth. Brother Noel Oliver [Pursat] has returned from his travels to Germany, Switzerland and Columbia where he met up with Father Hernan, the original founder of CROAP. Noel’s experimental rice growing system [to which Support cambodia contributed in 2016] began with 3 farmers at Keov Mony [CROAP] last year, now involves 24 and has also spread to Kompong Chhnang and Bosthorm [Sisophon]. Under this system, a 1 hectare field can produce a harvest of 4000k in a season – a huge improvement - and it is planned to introduce SRI across a wide area of North West Cambodia. Support cambodia hopes to support this in some way in 2018. The Safe Water Trust [the Sunderland-based not-for-profit company who supply water filters] have recently made an amazing offer: their Trustees have decided to make a donation of a large number of Water Filters to Support Cambodia to be distributed over the next few years. Our Trustees are considering very carefully how to make the best use of this wonderful gesture. It is possible that 3 of the Trust’s Trustees will visit Cambodia in January. More in the next issue. For information on Water Filters visit: w w w.grifaid.org

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ‘LINKS’ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> LINKS’ is a regular feature, highlighting other places in the UK with links to Cambodia. Moira Selvage reports on how a group at St. Peters, Gorleston is ‘Supporting Cambodia’“Interest in Cambodia has been gaining momentum in St Peter’s Parish. Following my visit to Cambodiain 2016 with the Trustees of the independent North Norfolk charity, Support Cambodia, I was able, with the help of our parish and others, to raise money towards much needed borewells in Pailin Province As a result of my visit, I experienced first hand the wells in action enabling the provision of nourishing meals for the children. This year other enthusiastic people from St Peter’s continued to raise money for another borewell [Prey Santeas] in the same area. So, on 27th September, 6 of us from St Peter’s, walked along Gorleston seafront to the pier. A charity box emblazoned with a ‘Support Cambodia’ logo was displayed to raise awareness about the importance of clean water. It was a perfect day – strollers, mothers and grandmothers pushing prams and the inevitable dogwalkers all taking advantage of the dry, calm weather with the sun peeping through. People donated whatever they had on their person. One lady emptied the entire contents of her purse into our donation box! In less than two hours £64.00 was collected. Our enthusiasm spread and we enlisted sponsorship from friends, relations and parishioners. Amy Darby, one of the six walkers and a keen Norwich City Football club supporter, commented, “I was grateful for their willingness to support this charity so generously” The final total raised amounted to £1000, “far beyond our expectations” remarked Elizabeth Hunt.[This has since been added to by the group. Ed.] £250 of the money raised will provide a community water filter for Nikum village near Battambang and the remaining money will be put towards a clean water project sometime in 2018.” 3 people from Gorleston will be visiting Cambodia independently in January.*******************************************************************************************

Space limitation means a very small ‘SUPPORTERS’ CORNER’ this time with simply a general ‘okoon

charen’ to ALL OUR WONDERFUL SUPPORTERS for giving their time and talents in 2017. One special mention however: Clare Tuck, who has been responsible for ‘dressing’ our mascot teddy bears Karuna & Metta, has moved to South Wales along with 3 Support Cambodia Bears! Huge thanks to Clare for a wonderful job - we will miss you - and welcome to Shelia Blasket who has offered to take on the task. ‘Karuna’ & ‘Metta’ are a great way to promote Support Cambodia and make unusual Christmas presents. ‘Pre-loved’ and cost the charity nothing, the Bears are always available, priced £3 - £5 according to size.
