What Does Gail Borden Public Library’s Referendum Question on November 4, 2014 Mean to You?

On Election Day, November 4, 2014, a small number of residents who live within the library’s current western boundaries and do not have public library service will be asked a referendum question. The question (see page 2) will ask them whether they want to join the Gail Borden Public Library District. This same question will also be asked of current library district members. It is important to remember that this referendum will not impact the taxes of current library members.

If the unserved people vote yes and the current residents vote yes on November 4 (votes are counted by precinct), these people will become members of the Library District and will have the same privileges available to them as those available to the current members. These prospective members have been provided with a complimentary card for the past 6 months to experience library services as well as informational materials.

Why a Geographic Referendum?

The Gail Borden Public Library District Board of Trustees made the decision to invite unserved people living within the Gail Borden Public Library District boundaries to become members of the library district to take advantage of the educational impact public library services have on students and lifelong learning. Public libraries play a major role in helping children to read. Numerous studies show a strong correlation between success in school and library usage. A little more than half of the students and households within the geographic referendum area do not have access to a public library (see map on page 2).

No Matter the Outcome

Whether the geographic referendum question passes or fails, the current Gail Borden Public Library District residents will see no changes. We will continue to strive to offer the best library services and programs we are able to provide.

Book Sale Thank YouIt takes a village to put on a successful book

sale, and the Gail Borden Library Foundation “village” was up to the task! We had the generous support of area businesses and organizations, The Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Berna Moving & Storage, Elgin School District U-46, Elgin Fresh Market and Anders Riedemann which helped defray expenses and increase profits. The library staff provided creative ideas and sage advice in so many ways which were crucial for our success. Our volunteers were outstanding! Book sorters work all year long categorizing our patrons’ generous donations. The enthusiastic support of the people who come in and set up for the book sale, worked the actual sale days, and/or helped break it down when it is over made our jobs easy and the book sale fun. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all! Library exhibits (like SuperCroc) and programs (like the Summer Reading Program with Clifford) are supported by the Book Sale profits and only possible with this generous support!
