• … how to achieve real cooperative research which will yield a benefit for all involved partners

• The following slides will give an example – project funding in cooperation with developing countries.

• Not commercial oriented but oriented to achieve results which should find the way into practice (no „pure“ basic research)

Current Funding by BMBF

• Funding of the programmesBIOLOG, BioTeam, Mata Atlântica, GBIF-D

• Budget: about 16 Mio € /annum• Cooperation with developing and megadiverse

countries:Benin, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, Ethiopia, Equador, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Namibia, Rep. South Africa, Uganda



Best preconditions:

• Trustful cooperation !!!- at the level of the involved scientists- at the governmental or regional level



Best preconditions (2): How to meet the national biodiversity action

plan and the national necessities of the partner country?

• - Participatory project planning• - Close dialogue between the funding

agency and decision makers within the partner country. (visits, WTZ)

• - Close dialogue between all involved scientists



Best preconditions (3)

• Within a current initiative which is funded by the EC (ERA-Net Biodiversa, www.Eurobiodiversa.org) a dialogue has been started between the european funding agencies to develop best practice methods for the funding of projects with developing countries



Project funding conditions (1): Part of the BMBF funding contracts

(CBD-conform; Bonn-guidelines)Publications:• All project reports in English/French language• A synthesis report has to be distributed also to

the stakeholders• Scientific publications together with the

cooperating country scientists



Project funding conditions (2):

Data management:

• Full transparency and data exchange by operating a common data base on the basis of a signed data protocol. (see BIOTA within BIOLOG)

• Access to the data by the partner country



Project funding conditions (3):

General rules:

• To accept the CBD guidelines
