With November come some chilly days, but things are heating up inside Churchville! We have recently hosted parent workshops in Math and Transition Planning for High School. Students have been engaged in wonderful learning inside and outside the classroom, and that learning has been enhanced by the incredible variety of extra curricular opportunities available here at the school. Do check the website and our e-announcements to stay up-to-date. From a learning perspective, we are going to be talking a lot in all classes about Growth Mindset. To paraphrase Carol Dweck (2015), a leading researcher in the area: “Students’ mindsets—how they perceive their abilitiesplay a key role in their motivation and achievement, and findings show that if we change students’ mindsets, we can boost their achievement. More precisely, students who believe their intelligence can be developed (a growth mindset) outperformed those who believed their intelligence was fixed (a fixed mindset)....Having children focus on the process that leads to learning (like hard work or trying new strategies) can foster a growth mindset and its benefits." We will be sharing quotes and stories to promote conversations and inspire students to persevere, take risks and see errors not as something to be avoided, but as important steps to 'growing your brain smarter'. Please look into the work of Carol Dweck and have Growth Mindset conversations at home as well. We want our students to understand that every day, in every way, they are getting better and better! Finally, Grade 1 to 8 Progress Reports will be coming home November 11th and conferences for Kindergarten through Grade 8 will follow the November 18th and 19th. The Peel District School Board is pleased to introduce an electronic resource page on www.peelschools.org called, Community Corner, which contains links to information and resources in the community that may be of interest to students and their families. This site replaces our previous method of sending promotional materials about community clubs, camps, contests, fundraisers and events home with students on a regular basis.

How you can access Community Corner

Visit www.peelschools.org/parents/communitycorner Click on the “Community Corner” button, found on the main page of school websites, as well as on www.peelschools.org.

On Monday, October 31st our students participated in a Bake Sale to raise money for United Way and Sick Kids Hospital. The money will help families in need. We raised $1,027.00. Congratulations to our students for their generosity.

WE DAY TORONTO On Wed. Oct. 19th, eight of our students had the privilege of attending WE Day Toronto - an event held at Air Canada Centre to inspire action and make change. Our students heard from speakers such as Margaret Trudeau (speaking about mental health), Hani Al Moulia (a Syrian refugee with a full scholarship to Ryerson University), and Chris Hadfield (astronaut, author, professor). Together with their teachers, they were inspired to make a difference in our world and hope to inspire others at Churchville public school to do the same.

MUSIC AND DANCE The dance & music rooms at Churchville have been busy thanks to our wonderful and talented students. Students have auditioned for Orff Crew, Glee Club, and the Bollywood/Bhangra Dance Team. They have demonstrated what it means to take risks and to be courageous. Congratulations to ALL who auditioned!!

Our gr. 8 guitarists, keyboard players and singers have been filling the rooms with song during nutrition break rehearsals (the Sopranos - gr. 3/4 choir; Charming Chargers - gr. 5 - 8 choir) as we prepare for our Remembrance Day production which will take place on November 11th at 10:15 am.

Coming up on Tuesday November 8th at 8:00 am are auditions for the Charger Dance Crew. These auditions are open to all students from gr. 4 to gr. 8. Stay tuned for details regarding our winter concert which will take place in the evening of Thursday December 22nd 2016. Churchville is filled with song and dance. We are so glad you are a part of it."

GRADE TWO FIELD TRIP TO THE TORONTO ZOO Here are what our Grade two students had to say about their trip to the Zoo. On Monday, Oct. 24th, 2016, all of the Gr. 2 classes went to the Toronto Zoo. First we saw the pandas. The babies were the cutest. Then we saw all of the reptiles. Next, we saw all of the fish. The sea horses were the smallest. At last, we saw all kinds of African animals. The rhinos were the biggest and the strongest. Finally we went back to school. I am excited for our next school trip. – Prabhvir Grade 2 On Monday October, 24th all of the Grade 2 classes went to the Toronto Zoo to learn about animals. First we loaded the bus and drove off. But on the way, I fell asleep. Then we came off the bus and heard the Ghost Buster’s song. Next we saw pandas. The mommy was eating like the daddy panda was. The baby panda was sleeping. After that we saw a polar bear. Her name was Juno. Her mom and dad came out too. And we saw lots more animals. Finally, we went back to the bus. I had so much fun at the Toronto Zoo, I hope we go again next month. –Arista Grade 2 On Monday, Oct. 24th, 2016, every Grade 2 class went to the Toronto Zoo to learn about different kinds of animals. Our Dash and Dot robots are the newest addition to our tech programming. Students write code on the iPad to create new behaviours for the robots. Combining creativity, spatial thinking and coding, the robots can complete challenges and perform tasks.

Engaging students in computer science at an early age motivates them to become creators and curators of technology. Our new robots not only expose our students to new ways of thinking, but shows them how computer science can be creative and fun.

Watch out for our Dash and Dot projects, coded by our own Churchville students.

Our lost and found has been growing and growing. We are hoping that you can stop by and have a look to see if anything belongs to you. The Lost and Found box is located in the Kindergarten Hallway beside the gym doors.

At the Peel board, our mission is to inspire success, confidence and hope in each child. There is no doubt that families play a vital role in helping us achieve this goal. As our partner in education, we hope you'll stay connected to your child's learning throughout his or her entire school experience.

Visit www.peelschools.org/parents/helpyourchild to explore all resources available to parents. There you will find easy-to-navigate buttons that connect families to tip sheets and web pages on a number of different topics, including math, homework, special education, EQAO and mental health. The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the week of Nov. 20 to 26, 2016.

This year, we ask our Peel community to ‘#ChooseAction to Be the Difference’ in their classes, offices, schools, communities or world, in order to make these spaces better places for everyone. The Peel Board would like to hear about the big and small actions, the pledges, the promises and the attitudes that our Peel community value, and ask that you take a moment to share your #ChooseAction moments on social media.
