PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY
With the upcoming elections our country is in need of prayer. Join us on Monday, November 7th at 6:30 pm for a half hour of gathering together to pray for our country, it’s leaders, and it’s future leaders. There will be no “political talk,” just a quiet service of hymns and prayers.
STEWARDSHIP REMINDER
Remember to turn in your Estimate of Giving and Spiritual Gift Sharing cards this weekend. So far we have 14 of each turned in. If you have misplaced your card, we have additional ones available on the Narthex table. If you have any questions, please see Dena
Query or Laurie Costales
VETERAN’S RECOGNITION SUNDAY
On Sunday, November 13th we will be honoring our Veterans with a slide show before and after church. We have many photos submitted by you from previous years. If you have not given us your photo and service information yet, please send them to the office as soon as possible. We can also scan photos here in the office if you bring them this Sunday.
EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETING
Our Education Committee will meet on Sunday, November 6th after church in the Children’s Church Room. Grab your Coffee Hour Treats and join us! Anyone is welcome, we will be discussing the Children’s Church Curriculum, Christmas Pageant, Youth Group, and other Children’s
activities here at church.

Lord, I say, “Thou art my God.” My

Psalm 31:14-15a
PASTOR’S MOMENT
This Sunday, Nov. 6 will bring the annual fall clock change in
daylight savings time. We are instructed to set our clocks back one
hour on Saturday evening before we go to bed, thus giving us an
extra hour of sleep—or an extra hour to think about important
things. This Sunday, Nov. 6 is also the date our Stewardship
Committee has asked that you have your estimate of financial
giving and spiritual (time and talent) giving cards returned to the
church. We sometimes call this “commitment Sunday.” I hope you
have been thinking for some time about this important matter
I found the following piece on the internet and it seems appropriate
in every church’s newsletter. Perhaps you have seen it before but
read it again thoughtfully.
“Our church was saddened to learn this week of the death of one of
our most valued members, Someone Else. Someone’s passing
creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us
for many years and for every one of those years, Someone did far
more than a normal person’s share of work. Whenever there was a
job to do, a class to teach, or meeting to attend, one name was on everyone’s list, “Let Someone Else
do it.” Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as
well as results, “Someone Else can work with that group.” It was common knowledge that Someone
Else was among the most liberal givers in the church. Whenever there was a financial need,
everyone just assumed Someone Else would make up the difference. Someone Else was a
wonderful person, sometimes appearing superhuman. Were the truth to be known, everybody
expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to
do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to
do the things Someone Else did? When you are asked to help this year, remember—we can’t
depend on Someone Else anymore.”
Keizer Christian Church needs “Doers” more than ever during our transition time. Remember: “We
all are ministers because we all have a ministry.” This congregation has a very good stewardship
tradition. Let’s keep up the strong commitment of service with our Lord.
Shalom,
Pastor Michael

YOUTH GROUP NEWS
At our Youth Group Time during the service we are studying different religions and comparing them to our Christian faith. As part of these studies we have created Venn diagrams that illustrate those comparisons. We will be posting them on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. If you have any questions, please feel free to talk to me or one of the members of the Youth Group.
THANKSGIVING SPECIAL OFFERING
The Thanksgiving Offering will be collected on November 6th and 13th. This special offering benefits the Colleges, Universities, Seminaries, and Divinity Houses affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). These learning communities are an
extension of the church, challenging students to understand and respond to God’s call to serve.
From the very beginnings of the movement, Disciples have founded institutions of higher learning, encouraging students in their intellectual pursuits. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is still committed to higher education. Your gift to the Thanksgiving Offering helps underwrite the education of students attending one of our fourteen undergraduate institutions and our seven seminaries or divinity houses.
Thousands of students have attended the Colleges and Universities of the Christian Church receiving both a quality education and the opportunity to remain within our Disciple’s heritage. Your financial gift provides scholarships and support for spiritual life offices. By giving to the Thanksgiving Offering you are investing in our students and helping keep education costs down.
The Thanksgiving Offering also provides scholarship and support for those pursuing theological education at one of our seven seminaries or divinity houses. Consider the many generations of pastors, who, if not for the support of faithful congregations and individuals over the ages would not have flourished as our pastors, teachers and leaders. What impact has your pastor had in the life of your church, community or region? You can thank them by supporting the Thanksgiving Offering.
Attending a Disciples College or Theological School is possible through the scholarships and grants that are made available by generous individuals, the Disciples Mission Fund and your gifts to the Thanksgiving Offering.

We are always looking for volunteers to be in our
Member Spotlight article. If you want to
volunteer, please let Laurie know!
Troy and Laurie Costales
Troy grew up in Southern California. He moved to
Oregon as a senior in High School. He attended
Chemeketa, WOU, and graduated from George Fox
College with his Bachelor’s degree. He recently went
back to school at Portland State University and graduated
with his Masters in Public Administration in 2015. He
began working part-time at the Salem-Keizer School
District while attending college then moved to the
Oregon Transportation Safety Commission in 1986. He
has moved up from receptionist/tech specialist to
research analyst to Deputy Administrator then
Administrator. He started his 20th year as the
Administrator this past September.
Troy accepted Christ in his early teens. He has been involved in church activities ever since
including leading youth groups, youth choir, and mission work.
Troy enjoys traveling, reading, and playing Runescape on the computer to relax. The only
thing he collects is hotel soaps and other items on his travels to donate to the “For Our Troops”
project. He is active in the Men’s Group, plays guitar in Praise Band, and is the current
Moderator for KCC.
Laurie was born in McMinnville, Oregon and moved every 2-3 years growing up so has lived
in various towns in Oregon, Washington, and California before her family moved to Salem for
good when she was in Junior High. She worked at her dad’s printing shop, Sir Speedy for
many years as a teenager and through college, as a lifeguard and swim instructor while at
college in Iowa, and various secretarial positions with the State of Oregon and Chemeketa
Community College. She “retired” for a time to raise the kids and then began working as the
church secretary here at KCC in June, 2011.

She was baptized and made confession of faith at Sunnyslope
Christian Reformed Church in south Salem and still has
many friends and ties at that church as her mother still
attends there. She fondly remembers the bus that picked her
up for Vacation Bible School and that is part of why she is so
passionate about our Bible Adventure Week Program. She
also enjoys singing with the KCC choir, helping at Food Bank
and is on the Education Committee. This will be her last year
as Stewardship Chairperson. She likes to travel, read,
scrapbook, and walk the dog.
We met while square dancing in 1984 and were married in
August, 1985. We have two children, Paul and Elizabeth who
are also very active in the church. We attended various
churches after we were married and while Paul was young.
We were invited to KCC by friends and were drawn to the
warm, friendly atmosphere here. We have been members for
17 years.
We both enjoy traveling and have visited many places
together and as a family in Oregon, Washington, and
California as well as Chicago, Illinois; Washington, D.C.;
Orlando, Florida, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts together.
Troy travels extensively for work and has visited many other
places—too many places to list! We have also had several
European holidays: France/Spain in 2001, then Spain/
Portugal for Paul’s graduation in 2008, and our last trip was
to London, Belgium, Amsterdam, Prague, Zurich and several
towns in Germany for Elizabeth’s graduation in the summer
of 2015. Troy frequently travels for work and Laurie joins
when she can. Troy will be an SSP for a deaf/blind friend
who is taking a cruise this fall. Working on a cruise? Not fair!
YOU’RE COLLECTING WHAT?
Kay Taylor is collecting toilet paper and paper
towel “cores” until Thanksgiving. You can donate
the full ones but we only need the cores for our
Christmas tree decorating project this year! Please place your
donations in the “For the Troops” box located on the literature
table in the Fellowship Hall.

Volunteers Needed
The Holy Spirit gives us many spiritual gifts. One of which is the Gift of Hospitality, described as: “Equipping one to enjoy making guests, strangers, and members feel welcome.” If you are blessed with the gift of hospitality, we would encourage you to exercise that gift each week by greeting a visitor, talking to someone you are not acquainted with, or inviting them to coffee hour with you. If you would like to be a greeter or guestbook attendant to “officially” greet someone before and after the service, please let the office know and we will get you on the schedule. If you are maybe not as outgoing but would still like to share this gift, think about providing Coffee Hour or Birthday Sunday treats one week or working together with someone else in the congregation to provide them. There is a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall with many open dates to choose from!.
