From Our Readers

We are offering $100 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person ( s) who killed our sailing Siamese cat on or after Friday, October 20. Her body was found weighted in the channel between Portofino and King Harbor Marina.

If you could publish this, we - and others who have lost pets at Portofino recently - would appreciate it deeply. If you've ever had a cat you loved, you'll understand. If you haven't then please believe us when we tell you ours was a gentle, affectionate cat that never hurt anyone or any thing and we loved her very much. Sincerely, June and Larry Glenn, 255 Portofino Way, Redondo Beach, 90277

NEW STERNWH EELER PLANNED

A new £rm headed by Frank Davis of Marina del Rey and made up of Bay Area investors has announced it is building Marina Belle, the first Harbor Cruise and Private Party boat in Southern California for certification by the U.S. Coast Guard for coastwise cruising up to twenty miles from shore, with its own heliport.

Designed along the lines of an early riverboat sternwheeler, the sixty-five foot steel hulled vessel will have a dance floor and bar, plus four and eight track stereo on each deck, with closed-circuit television and a bandstand on the main level. It will be capable of catering to private groups of up to one hundred and fifty, and may be the forerunner of a new type of party-boat franchise operation for rec-

Belle launched at Marina de! Rey by next May," said D avis . Design is under the direction of Rados & Sons of San Pedro, the £rm responsible for the revamping of the Queen Mary when it arrives in Long Beach next month.

Skippers Who Are REAL Seamen

That is one objective of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Most Auxiliary education is on an informal basis within Flotillas, with men and women who cruise on your own waters and know local conditions. In addition, there are topnotch correspondence courses obtainable at cost from the U.S. Coast Guard Institute - piloting, celestial navigation, mathematics for navigators, and meteorology.

As an additional bonus, those completing these courses, in addition to receiving a Certificate from the Coast Guard Auxiliary, are usually eligible for a discount in rates when purchasing marine insurance.

Rowing Attempt Ends Two Redondo Beach youths re

turned home this week from Baja California, disappointed, bruised and shaken, after two near-death ordeals suffered while attempting to row a dory from Redondo Beach to New York.

Larry M. Remmers, 20, and Craig South, 19, had to abandon their plans after their dory crashed on the rocks in heavy surf off Punta Banda in Baja California. They had rowed 265 miles in 10 days - an average of 26½ miles p r day.

The combination of losing most of their gear plus the instability of the

marina del rey's

boat with the additional weight aboard were insurmountable handicaps, said the youths.

Lost during the 10-day trip, in addition to broken oars, were two radio sets, skin-diving and fishing gear, clothes, sleeping bags and food.

Asked if they'd undertake the trip again, both replied, "No - not under the same conditions."

Aside from the hazards encountered, both young men reported that people generally treated them well along the coastline - 'but we never did get away from people - and that was one of the main reasons for our trip."

Those Arti-Fish Reefs

After you and other humans get through with your car, fish may get another three or four good years out of it. To many fish , happiness is a kelp bed - or reasonable facsimile. Auto bodies, street cars, concrete blocks and quarry rock are used by the State Department of Fish and Game as artificial kelp beds to lure back fish who left when the kelp did.

To provide a choice of neighborhoods , several arti-fish reefs have been installed between Redondo Beach and Paradise Cove, with one a mile or so west of the Del Rey breakwater. They

are marked by small, square buoys bearing the full name - "Artificial Fishing Reef." An extra-full name might be, "Official Artificial Fishing Reef for Genuine Fish, Fishermen and Officials."

Occasionally, divers have been sent down to survey the results, by traffic counts. They have found quarry rocks to be popular, as well as cheap and durable, but many fish prefer the automobiles.

As to which kinds of cars fish prefer, there is only the report of one diver -who had stayed down quite a while -who said that a friendly dolphin named Eustace volunteered to act as in terpreter while he interviewed some individual fish . According to this report, opinions were pretty much like

those of people.

Most fish approved cars with prominent tail.fins. Barracuda and marlin complained that there were too many General Motors cars, but stingrays disagreed. Electric eels wanted batteryoperated cars and groupers preferred the street cars. One .school demanded buses - preferably, schoolbuses - and several flying fish wanted airplanes. Only a few old crabs didn't like anything.

So, almost regardless of what kind of a car you drive, some fish would love it. When you sell, be sure there are no old fish hooks sticking around. You might even tuck a piece of kelp under the seat.

OUR FAVORITE GUEST BY BETTY LEVESON

Wears rubber soled footgear, if possible, non-skid boating type.

Comes aboard on time with proper gear stows it as directed.

Learns the meaning of a few nautical terms.

Obeys the skippers commands and instructions without argument.

Knows the location of life jackets, life rings, and fire extinguishers and learns how to use them.

Finds out how to operate the head by asking the skipper or mate before attempting to use it.

Cooperates in conserving the limited supply of water and electricity.

Determines the direction of the wind before throwing anything over the side so it will not be blown back aboard.

Flips cigarette butts overboard or puts them out in an ash tray, not on floor or table top.

Never smokes, strikes a match or flips a lighter when engine is being started or boat is being fueled.

Stands clear of docking lines and anchor rode.

Drinks moderately, if at all, when under way.

Refrains from handling the skippers binoculars and chart so they will always be at hand when needed.

Stays below and out of the way in rough weather unless given a job to do.

Never fo1 gets to duck the batches. Keeps_ fish lines away from the anchor

rode and propeller. Doesn't hog the dinghy. Considers the feelings of other boaters

by not being too noisy and always having good boating manners.

~295.

If going to be a guest overnight, brings a minimum amount of extra clothing and packs it along with personal toiletries in a knapsack, ditty bag, duffel bag, laundry or pillow slip. No suitcases, please.

Arranges his affairs so he does not have to be back from the trip by a specific time of the day.

We, the SKIPPER and MATE, salute you, OUR FAVORITE GUEST.
