Dear Parents and Guardians,
Parent/Teacher Conferences
If you do not have a time set up, please contact the teacher as soon as possible. This is
another opportunity for you to ask questions and understand how you can continue to
support your child and work together with the teacher. If you are unable to come to
conferences, your child’s teacher will be contacting you to set up a phone conference. It
is important that we contact 100% of our parents.
5Essentials Survey
Thank you to those that completed the survey so promptly! If you have not had the time
or misplaced the email with the link, you can access the survey at http://survey.5-
essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/ .
Wall of Gratitude
Please take the time to thank a staff member for all their efforts with your child. You
may do this on the main page of the district website or access the form at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/D161Wallofgratitude .
Weather
As the weather gets colder, we continue to go outside for recess. It’s important that
your child is properly dressed for the weather elements. Please send your child to school
with a warm jacket, gloves, hat, and scarf. Also, please think about having an extra
sweater in your child’s backpack in the event they are cold in the classroom.

Indian Trail is a Bully Free Zone
We at Indian Trail EXPECT RESPECT in all areas of the school. We work hard to ensure a safe,
nurturing, and positive climate for all students and staff. It is imperative that you help us
maintain an environment that is conducive to learning and free from bullying behaviors.
What can we do together to PREVENT bullying behavior?
• Create clearly defined expectations
• Teach social skills and tolerance early
• Foster positive relationships and environments
• Empower students to support and respect each other
• Set the right examples for students to follow
• Work as a team to help unite students rather than divide them
TYPES OF BULLYING
Verbal Bullying-usually consists of
teasing, mocking, spreading rumors,
lying about others. Bullying comments
may focus on outer appearance. But to
be bullying it must occur more than one
time.
Emotional/Social Bullying- uses peer
pressure and manipulation to isolate the
target and to hurt their feelings. The
victim usually feels that they have no
friends, no one to talk to, and no way to
escape.
Physical Bullying- Consists of pushing,
tripping, hitting, or acting like you are
going to push, trip or hit another.
Cyber Bullying – Includes written or
electronic communication directed to
another to cause fear, emotional, or
psychological harm.
WHAT IS BULLYING?
• Placing a student in reasonable fear of his/her personal property or
• Causing substantially detrimental effect on the student’s physical or mental health or
• Substantially interfering with the student’s academic performance or
• Substantially interfering with the student’s ability to participate in services, activities, or privileges provided by a school
• Cyber Bullying includes written or electronic communication directed to another to cause fear, physical emotional or psychological harm.

The first grade students focused on friendship this month. On October 7th, we wore blue to
observe World Day of Bullying Prevention. We discussed the importance of celebrating our
differences as we read The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin. This book inspired some
of our students to create a pumpkin patch filled with unique pumpkins. Other students created
pumpkins and wrote clues about the pumpkin's unique features to help others find them. On
October 23rd, we celebrated Unity Day by wearing orange. Throughout the month, we
discovered that showing kindness and honoring the uniqueness of others are the keys to being
great friends!

Third grade students at Indian Trail have been getting their fingers
moving with different projects to prepare them for the typing
portion of the IAR (State) exam. The program we have been using
is the online website called www.typing.com. This keyboarding
program is filled with engaging lessons, typing games, and
assessments that
are personalized
for each student. The typing pre-test
also analyzes students' starting speed
and accuracy and sets personalized
achievement goals for the durations of
the program. According to Common Core
Standards, students must
demonstrate sufficient command of
keyboarding skills.
Keyboarding is an important skill that
students must have in preparation for
the IAR assessment they will take this
upcoming March. The English Language
Arts (ELA) component of the
assessment has open-ended questions
that students must type in a timely
manner. All classes have begun
preparing for this and will continue with
in-class projects, timed typing, and
extended response typing practice as well.
Students are able to access www.typing.com at home and
practice their typing skills. Please visit the Summit Hill
homepage and click on quick links (at the bottom). Get those
fingers moving and practice, practice, practice….. especially
over winter break😊

Fourth grade students have been learning and participating in activities for the STEMscope: Plant
and Animal Parts. One activity looked at studying the internal and external structures of
different types of fruits and vegetables. Throughout this experiment, the students were able to
understand the difference between the internal and external structures while comparing and
contrasting. Next, the children were introduced to the concept of adaptations, meaning the
characteristics/traits that plants and animals have in order to meet their basic needs for survival.
Classes did an adaptation matching activity where students were able to make the connection that
these features have functions. This gave the students the opportunity to use prior knowledge and
learn a new concept to understand what plants and animals need in order to survive.

Students in Mrs. Moss’s third grade class pose with their boomwhackers after completing a
lesson exploring high and low sounds. Students learned about the many factors that contribute
to pitch, including instrument size and sound frequency. All music students at Indian Trail will
explore pitch and melodic contour in the month of October through instrumental and vocal
music units, composition, and technology / notation software.

Keeping Healthy Classrooms
In order to provide as healthy a school environment as possible for students and staff, please use the following guidelines to assist you with decisions relating to your child’s health and school attendance. Upon making the decision to keep your child home, please notify the school before 9:00 am that the student will be absent. It is considered “best practice” to provide the school with a note from your Doctor/ANP or PA for illnesses with absences over 3 days. Common Cold – Irritated throat, clear or whitish discharge from nose and eyes, sneezing, chills, cough, and general body discomfort. Your child should remain home if symptoms are serious enough to interfere with his/her ability to learn. Medical care should be obtained if symptoms persist beyond 7-10 day, if fever >100ºF develops, or if discharge becomes yellow or green. Fever – If a child’s temperature is 100ºF or greater, he/she should remain at home until they have been without a fever for a full 24 hours without fever reducing medication. Remember that fever is a symptom indicating the presence of an illness. Flu – Sudden onset of fever, chills, headache and sore muscles. Runny nose, sore throat and cough are common. Your child should remain home until symptoms are gone and the child is without fever for a full 24 hours without fever reducing medication. Head Lice – Your child may return to school after completion of recommended treatment and when ALL nits (eggs) have been removed. Pink Eye – Redness and swelling of the membranes of one or both eyes with burning or itching, discharge, or crusted eyelids. Your child should remain home until receiving a full 24 hours of antibiotic therapy and when discharge from the eyes has stopped. Skin Rashes – A physician should evaluate skin rashes of unknown origin before your child is sent to school. A child having any rash of unknown origin will be sent home until cleared by a doctor. Strep Throat – Begins with fever, sore, red throat, pus spots on the back of the throat, and tender swollen glands in the neck. High fever, nausea and vomiting also may occur. Your child should remain home until he/she has received a full 24 hours of antibiotic therapy and until he/she has been without vomiting and fever for a full 24 hours without the aid of medication. Feeling ill – (Stomachache, cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, headache, all associated with body aches). Your child should remain at home until he/she has had none of the above noted symptoms for a full 24 hours. If your child had any of the above symptoms over night, he/she should not be sent to school the following day; even if the child reports feeling “fine” in the morning.
Please reinforce healthy practices by encouraging frequent hand washing with soap and water.

Indian Trail’s 5th Annual Pumpkin
Decorating Contest
The Indian Trail “Make a Difference” Service Club, along with the parents and students of Indian Trail in
Frankfort, Illinois, had their third Pumpkin Decorating Contest/Food Drive. Students in grades 1-4 decorated and
brought in pumpkins to help decorate the media center. The catch?!? Everyone that entered the contest brought in
food to benefit Frankfort Food Pantry.
The contest had about 150 entries. The Make a Difference Club Service Club members, as well as the
teachers, and Principal Dana Wright voted on the most creative and artistic pumpkins.
The students and their families were very generous with their donations and the school collected about 10 boxes
of food to help the needy at Thanksgiving.
A special thanks to the winners for showing such creativity!
First grade winners: Lily Huizinga and Jenna Eisel
Second grade winners: Jaxson Jester and Brynlee Faldzinski
