Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Our school is continually looking for ways to advertise the learning that occurs throughout the day, as well as upcoming school and PTA events. Ferndale has a Twitter page! If you have a Twitter account, please “follow” us. If you don’t have a Twitter account, it is easy to create one and it’s free. Periodically, we will be posting announcements, pictures, examples of student work, projects and many other learning opportunities from various classrooms. Our Twitter page is: FerndaleEarlyEdCenter (@FerndaleEarlyEd), with a picture of the school. We also have a Facebook page and you can search “Principal Rice.” The same announcements are posted on both our school webpage, as well as checking your child’s take-home folder every day. American Education Week is coming soon. It is November 11-15. This is a great time to visit your child’s classroom. Visitation will be from Monday, November 11, 2019 through Friday, November 15, 2019 from 9:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. We look forward to seeing you during this week! On behalf of all our teachers, I would like to thank the parents who attended the October parent teacher conferences. It was a good time to meet with your child’s teacher and learn about their progress thus far. If you were not invited to attend the October parent teacher conferences or you didn’t sign up with Sign Up Genius, you are invited in March. You may also request a conference at any point in the year by reaching out to the teacher. The weather has started to turn chilly and cold. Please send in an extra change of clothes for your child in case of accidents. Items such as pants, socks, long sleeved shirts, etc. Once this change of clothing comes in, we can send the summer clothes home. Also, remember that we do plan to go outside for STEM classes and recess, weather permitting. If the temperature is above 32 degrees, we plan to go outside. Please make sure that you send your children in with coats, jackets, gloves, hats, etc. Ferndale will be having their Book Fair the week of December 2nd. If you would like to volunteer to help with this event, please contact Colleen Nehman, our Volunteer Coordinator and Reading Specialist, or Erika Brown, our PTA President. This event will be even more successful with your support! Thanks to the following businesses: Chipotle of Glen Burnie for their partnership with the Cromwell/Ferndale PTA Chick-fil-A of Ritchie Highway, for their partnership with the Cromwell/Ferndale PTA
Thank you for your continued support.
Have a wonderful November and Thanksgiving holiday! Sincerely, Lisa Rice Principal

News from the Health Room
As we move into November and the weather officially becomes colder, we’ll begin to see more cases of the flu and other illnesses. To ensure that we keep our students, families and staff healthy, please remember these important tips:
• AACPS policy states that students need to be free of fever (100˚ F or higher), vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours without medication before returning to school.
• Please send your children to school with jackets and warmly dressed. Recess is outside when temperatures are above 32˚ F.
• Continue to contact your child’s teacher, the office or the health room when your child is out for an extended length of time due to illness. This helps us keep track of illnesses within the building and allows us to alert those with compromised immune systems of possible exposure.
• For an absence to be marked as excused due to illness, please send a note to your child’s teacher. If your child is absent for more than 5 school days, a note from a physician is required to excuse the absence and give clearance for your child to return to school/activities.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Health Room. Have a great November!

Music News
In music, students have been working hard during the first quarter understanding beat by moving and playing instruments. Most recently kindergarten classes have started learning rhythm, the sounds and silences on the beat, which they have read, written and played. Both Pre-K and Kindergarten began working with pitch to recognize the higher and lower sounds. We will continue to build on these concepts as well as the sounds of the instruments, and organization of music throughout the year. This year’s vision in the music classroom is to cultivate lifelong learners, creators and consumers of music. You can encourage your child by having them listen to music with you or write and clap rhythms at home.

SECURITY/EVACUATION
DRILL
Each month the staff and students
practice various security drills. In
October, our school initiated an
announced fire/evacuation drill
between lunch shifts. We were able to
evacuate the building in a safe and
timely manner.

Updating Phone Numbers
Updating home, cell phone numbers and current addresses are very important information for the school to have on file. In the event your child becomes ill and/or needs to be released early, information on individuals to be contacted needs to be kept up to date. Thank you!
From the Media Center
Hello from the Ferndale Media Center! Kindergarten, Pre-Kindergarten and ECI classes have done a wonderful job of minding their library book manners and learning checkout procedures. It's very exciting to see how thrilled students are when they get to take a book home. This November, all classes will be discussing authors, illustrators and MD Book Awards. We will also identify the characters and setting in books, while enjoying seasonal literature about Autumn and Turkeys! Please help your child take good care of their books and remind them to bring books back on time.
Thank you, Kelli Knode
Media Specialist
Important Visitor Information
For the safety and security of our students and staff, we ask that all visitors, for whatever reason, show a photo ID and sign-in to the main office. You will then receive a badge before leaving the office.
We also ask that if you would like to visit your child’s classroom that an appointment is made first.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding with these procedures.

Brain Tip of the Month
Brain Language
Sleep is enormously important to healthy brain development and learning.
Students need between 9.25 and 10.5 hours of sleep per night!
Physical Education News During the month of November students in Pre- Kindergarten and Kindergarten will be focusing on Relay Races, Healthy Eating and Scooter activities. We will continue working on the proper way to gallop, skip, hop and jump. November is a great time to get outside and take walks with your families. Enjoy the weather and the beautiful foliage. Please help your child to remember their tennis shoes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Boots (rain, cowboy, snow and UGG), crocs, sandals and shoes with heels are not safe or appropriate for our movement activities.

READING NOTES:
KINDERGARTEN SUPER READERS have completed the October reading incentive. Students
who read twenty nights in October will be rewarded with a
free book and popcorn party.
November’s Reading Tip
To help your child connect sounds to letters
(breaking the code), point out letter/sound relationships to
your child. Use books, cereal boxes, magazines,
environmental signs, etc.
For example, “Stop begins with the letter S.
What sound does S make? What other words begin with
that sound?” Place pictures on the floor. Roll your
matchbox car to the picture that begins with the “S”
sound.
READ FOR THE RECORD
Ferndale Students will take part in Jumpstart’s Read
for the Record, an exciting event scheduled to take place on
November 7, 2019 in our district and in community centers,
schools, libraries, homes, and other gathering places across
the United States.
Jumpstart is asking adults and children to support early
education opportunities by reading aloud the official
campaign book, Thank you, Omu! by Oge Mora, on
November 7, to break the record for the largest shared
reading experience ever. Anne Arundel County consistently
holds one of the largest Read for the Record events in the
United States. Last year we were pleased that 16,369
students and adults in all of our elementary schools
participated in events throughout the county, large and
small!
READING NOTES:

News from the Cafeteria
It’s starting to feel like Fall! As a reminder, all children receive a free breakfast every day. They are doing a great job by eating a healthy breakfast. Hot breakfast is served each Wednesday, in addition to the regular items served each day. French toast sticks and pancake wrap is a favorite. Hot entrée, entrée salad or cheese and yogurt combos come with Fresh fruits. The children are trying new foods and that makes us smile
Prices are as follows: Full paid $2.75, Free and Reduce $.0 and Milk $.55 cents. So, ask your child what they had for breakfast and lunch, you may be surprised of what they ate. We continue to love What we do in the Cafeteria and the reward is seeing their smiling faces.

FEEC Counselor’s Corner
I would like to begin by thanking all the families who donated food items to Harvest for the Hungry! Our school collected 8 boxes of food to help. During the month of October, our school’s counseling lesson focused on personal space. We discussed how to give each other plenty of room when we are sitting on the carpet and walking in line. We also talked about the importance of keeping our hands and feet to ourselves. Please discuss personal space with your kids at home to reinforce this very important concept. If you have any questions about our lessons or want to discuss an individual concern, please call me at 410-222-6927. Thank you, Jennifer Billings School Counselor
Please remind your child that any student can be the “Student of the Month.” Please encourage them to work towards positive school behavior
every day!
